I was just looking about at some stats from our games (a bit bored) and thought I'd point out the obvious:

Our third quarters are our best, with ~30% of our scoring shots, ~32% of our goals, and ~29% of our behinds.
Our second quarters are second best, with ~23% of our scoring shots, but ~26% of our goals, and ~20% of our behinds.
Then comes the fourth quarter, with ~27% of our scoring shots, ~24% of our goals, and ~30% of our behinds.
Last is the first quarter, with only ~19% of our scoring shots, ~18% of our goals, and ~21% of our behinds.

We are much more accurate in the second and third quarters, and also score more, though if we could maintain that accuracy into the final quarter then our second half would be better. Our first quarters are really disappointing so far and we really need to improve that.

Also out general accuracy is poor, with .84 behind for every goal.

Since round 8, however, we have improved. Accuracy is up, down to .63 behind per goal.

Our second half is even more dominant than before, but not by whole lot, with ~59% of scoring shots, ~57% of goals, and ~60% of behinds. Our first quarters have improved, about equal to the second quarter which has dropped a bit in comparison to to the fourth.

I think part of this is due to our gameplan, which takes greater advantage when the opposition begins to tire, and for this reason I think we have to continue to dominate third quarters if we want to win games, but also come our even harder in the first quarters and push the opposition and wear them down as soon as possible.

For this reason I think the first and third quarters are the most important for us when we play and I hope the boys can come out hard tomorrow night and put the pressure on the pies.

some good analysis there - our coaching panel has been well aware of the poor 1st quarters and have been attempting to address the issue.

your point about tiring the opposition is very relevant - blokes like dyson have come to the fore in 2nd halves due to their high fitness levels.

IMO I don't care If our first quarters aren't our best, because I know if we just stay in touch we could blow them away in the second half, look at our last game

No offence, but this is pretty dumb.

If we'd played a good first quarter against Port we'd have only been down by a goal or two at half time, instead of being down 4 goals +.

If we'd played a better first quarter against North we'd have drawn or won the game (down 12 after a quarter, lost by 12)

We gave up a 6 goal halftime lead to Brisbane off the back of a 1 goal first quarter.

We gave up a 4 goal lead to St. Kilda in the first land lost by 19...

We gave up a 5 goal lead to Geelong in the first and another 4 in the second, leaving us without a hope in hell.

In fact, apart from the Adelaide game, every single one of our losses has been off the back of a terrible first quarter.

We've won 5 first quarter and the only one of them that we have lost was Adelaide, when they managed to score 9.0 to half-time. If we'd have had the same accuracy that game it'd have been 14.0 to 9.0 or 10.4 to 6.3, which would have been a 25-30 point lead instead of a 10 point one. And a 30 point lead would have meant we'd have gotten over by 4.

I was going to make a bold prediction, we will blow Collingwood away in the 3rd quarter. Hopefully we hang on for the 1st and 2nd and then absolutely smash them in the 3rd.

I hate putting teams "away" in the 3rd quater, because there's always that fear of letting them creak back up again in the 4th.

I think keeping in touch in the 1st, putting teams away in the 2nd is a good way to go. You see how they respond after the long break, try to match them again, and put them away in the 4th. It all comes together well.

Of course, you can't put anyone away unless you have the skill, and even then it's not always second to minute perfect.

The one thing I noticed was that we usually turn the ball over or let the opposition slip a few goals just before a quater ends. I hate this, why does it happen?... because with 2 minutes or so to go, we play it "safe" and run down the clock. This is a stupid tactic!... it's the fact that we slow down which ends up giving scoring shots to the opposition. We need to play on and leave the clock out of it, so that we can keep our mentality on track all the way to the last second. It just seems a waste of 20 minutes effort if let the opposition chip some of it away in the last 3. We need to start fresh quaters with a healthy lead and cutting this habit out will help that plan I think.

My 2 cents.

Somewhat confirms my thoughts that we had been great in the 3rd quarter this year, but lacklustre in the first, however the data is largely irrelevant without considering what we concede at the defensive end in the respective quarters?
