This was done by the AFL and includes most of NSW aswell as South Melbourne's old zone. This is what the Swans would look like

SYDNEY SWANS
B:
Josh Gibson, Brent Staker, Scott Thornton
HB: Paul Bevan, Craig Bolton, Dean Solomon
C: Kieren Jack, Jarrad McVeigh, Tadhg Kennelly
HF: James Gwilt, Ashley Hansen, Craig Bird
F: Stephen Milne, Cameron Mooney, Adam Schneider
Ruck: Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Lenny Hayes, Mark McVeigh
Inter: Dylan Addison, Henry Playfair, Beau Dowler, Ryan Davis

The Swans draw on South Melbourne’s traditional zone as well as the majority of NSW (apart from a small area zoned to Geelong and North Melbourne.)

South Melbourne had access to players in part of inner-city Melbourne as well as north-east Victoria and a patch around the Oakleigh-Noble Park area. This section might only cover a few suburbs but it would provide the Swans with Scott Thornton, Stephen Milne, Ashley Hansen, James Gwilt and Beau Dowler. The final side is quite impressive and would definitely be a competitive outfit.

Its fare to say that is quite a competitive outfit (there are 8 current Swans in the side) but the one weakness would have to be lack of any power forwards. Cameron Mooney isnt really that good.

Nor any real ruckman either. Compared to some this zone not actually stacking up as overly strong.

Souths inner city Zone had been questionable for a long time, sure it threw up some good players like but even in the 30s our premiership team had a lot of WA and Laurie Nash from Launceston in it.

The Oakleigh to Noble Park zone which gave us Mark Bays is now well populated with Greek (in this area most play soccer), Vietnamese and now Sudanese communities.

Not a terrible side, and pretty damn good considering that NSW is a rugby-dominated state. Better than I expected, to be honest. Hansen at CHF is a worry, because as far as I'm concerned he's a third tall at best. The midfield is pretty high quality, and the backline is solid enough.

Ruck stocks and a lack of good power forwards after Mooney, who himself is not the sort of player who tends to grab games by the scruff of the neck, are the genuine weaknesses.

It is the omissions that highlight how unfair the old Swans zone was

eg
Leo Barry (Deniliquin)
Brett Kirk (Albury)
Shane Crawford ( Finley)

There are stacks of other NSW riverland and ACT players which the Vics got in the VFL zone "gerrimander"!:(

Pretty good side all considered... but bench Staker and Hansen ....(I don't think girls qualified then!!!:D)

Those players went to Victorian clubs because their clubs played in Victorian Leagues. Thats was to make sure clubs couldn't abuse the system and move players over the Murray and into NSW and out the Victorian Zone System. Hence the clubs along the Murray River on the NSW side that played in Victorian Leagues were zoned as part of Victoria. It was fair for the most part because it stopped a possible abuse of the system.

Once the Swans moved to Sydney and became " a NSW club" we only had until 1987 until the Draft came in for Victorian Players and a few years after that the Zones were removed full stop because they got rid of the Under 19's. While we were South Melbourne we had no link to NSW and once we did the Murray region was still closer to Melbourne than Sydney and hence the zone in place unready didn't need to be changed for the few years that they stayed in place for.

I realise or hope they aren't considering re-introducing zones!

But Oh just take both sides of the Murray for Victoria! Ok there probably was some practical reasons ie assistance etc to the Vic controlled border leagues like Ovens and Murray etc

BUT

It always amazed me how Swans (a foundation club) got zoned (exclusively?) NSW!!! Then except for the at the time stronger than now Sydney League and the former "South West" now "Riverina" League... they got rubbish anyway, as most strong clubs were on the border.

e.g. The Danihers as far as I know are the only quality (by a huge margin) to come out of Ungarie! The standard of their league and grounds etc was appauling and thus Ant and Chris moved to Wagga to play for Turvey Park in SWL to get stronger comp to develop in. Given their fathers huge involvement with Essendon (a major quasi sponsor and powerbroker) they were all always going to end up there regardless of the "zone rules"

Dont know the full ins and outs but I think North Melbourne had a part of NSW that was in their zone.

Yeah,I think your right there. My Uncle played for Mytleford in the Ovens and Murray League and was drafted by North Melbourne who had all the O&M teams in their zone. That was in the late sixties, early seventies.
