Big Boi has got some friends together for the Purple Ribbon All Stars, and the song Kryptonite/I Be On it is pretty hot, sounds very nice in the car!

I dunno if sellouts is the right term.

I admit I'm not feeling their newer stuff as much, but they still continue to push the envelope imo. Just not as much to my liking as in the past.
Not the BEP type sellout, but it seems they are enjoying the commercial side of which didn't surround the early recordings. It has affected the sound somewhat, but that may be just me growing older:eek:

I think it is. Though if the 082 is any reflection you're only a year older than me.

you can't say they aren't still risky. Andre just embraced singing a bit more and focused on melodies imo.

For a single group to churn out vastly ddifferent and yet still brilliant and popular music over such a long period puts them in the top 5 hiphop artists of all time for mine. Especially they started at 17 years old.

I don't even think the BEP sold out, considering they've always used female vocals since the beginning. They just added a full time female to the group.

I've seen them live a few times too (BEP) though, so maybe I'm being blinkered by how much I love their live shows etc. And I'l be the first to admit i think their new album is pure ass - but I just think they got worse, rather than sold out.

I don't hold any grudges against them though, they were responsible for two very good records and one ok one.

Agreed, they progressed but did it with integrity, the music they are making is vastly different but I like to think of it as innovation.

I definitly think they sold out, they where one of the truest hip hop acts going around, they now fit into the formulated commercial intentions basket.

While it's true that BEP used a lot of guest female vocals pre-sell out, the main difference is in the beats and subject matter. If you got rid of all the vocals, you could still tell a world of difference between now and 2001. They're now homogenous pop beat central.

Look I definitely understand the logic behind the sell out term being applicable to BEP. I suppose I just don't hold any grudge against them for going comercial, cause they always had that appeal in them I thought.

I wouldn't buy their new album, but I don't hate them for sticking to the formula that made them a hit either.

Amen

Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap has the ATCQ feel to beats and lyrics, and i would bet my life that if ATCQ had big titted white chick singing sugar coated hooks and the subject matter turned to mindless drivel like "humps" or the like...we would be calling the questers sellouts too, yet the world would have at least heard of them.

They are sellouts, plain and simple!

I now realise that Outkast have a loooooooong way to go before they completely sell out:eek:

Listen to difference between Elephunk and Monkey Business, there is a huge gap between these

whilst monkey business has a few songs for a party, most of it is trash, with fergie and will.i.am dominating the scene. My Humps is a banger, but is a waste of a song

elephunk on the other hand, was a damn good record, most of the songs had great replay value, the party songs on there are some of the best, and the lyrical side of the album is still pretty good, much better than

"mix your milk with my cocopuff/
milky-milky cocopuffs"

Just been playing sole old Outkast again today - felt like bumping the thread. Stankonia is still a wicked record.

Oh, and in my previous posts in this thread, I was wrong about BEP - they DEFINITELY sold out in the end.

Um, they did follow up Speakerboxx/The Love Below? The results weren't pretty.

ATLiens is a brilliant album. Get it in ya.

As for BEP, in my years, I can't think of anyone who has sold out "as much" (whatever the metric happens to be). I don't hate them for it, I was just disappointed... Bridging the Gap was quality.

Aquemini is almost as good too.

As for selling out, I'm not sure. It seems as though a big chunk of the really good, consistent hip-hop artists have released some unfathomably shit albums in the last few years; Mos Def and Kweli, J5 and even The Roots' latest effort was incredibly average.

It seems as if it's almost an industry trend.

Ah yes, I was going to put Jurassic 5's last effort out there. That was a fail attempted crossover right there wasn't it. A few nice tracks on there, but "taking it back" can only be milked for so long...

Glad I got to see them live when they were at their peak.

Yep, they were awesome live...although I feel a bit for the other 3 guys given 2na gets more love than the 3 of them combined. Did he ever release that solo album he was talking about for years?

Don't know about the solo album, although that was effectively the driving force behind the split, yeah?

Charlie's was always a bit of a gimmick/niche rapper IMO that is at its best in a group format. No surprise most of his recent appearances have been collaborations.

I saw them after Quality Control. They haven't made ANYTHING good since imo, and the hippy/surfy crowd has latched onto them (never a good sign, those skegs have ****in horrible taste in music).

Of all the 'old school' groups I enjoyed in the late 90's and early 2000's very few have remained any good.

Kweli and Mos got worse (still have respect for them though)
BEP blatantly sold out
Outkast hit the mainstream
J5 have been downright awful since QC
The Roots are still the best live band in the world (have been for about 8 years now imo), but as far as their releases go, they've been treading water
Lauryn Hill went insane
Jedi Mind Tricks sound the same as they did on debut

Honestly, Dead Prez, Cormega and Nas have all been good - but a lot of the stuff I used to REALLY enjoy has gotten substantially worse. I remember when I heard Kanye West - Through The Wire, about a year before he even released his first album, and I was like "whoa, this guy could change Hiphop" - what a massive let down.

I know everyone was sick of the Gangsta shit that was popular 5 years ago, like Eminem, 50 cent, Dr Dre etc. but right now, the so-called 'old school' stuff is now in the mainstream.

The only guy I can think of who is still really awesome, that I used to love, is Pharoahe Monche - but even he is trying to hit the crossover market.

*pours out a lil' liquor* lol

The album was going to be all collabs, iirc.

As for him being a gimmick rapper, that's probably true. I just don't think he had the creativity, but his voice/flow were as good as anyone's. That's why Ozomatli worked so well, his booming voice came in almost like a drum solo.

Mmmm, yes. Perhaps not gimmick rapper, but you know what I mean. Needs some ying to his yang.
Definitely. Tunafish is great, but does his best work on guest appearances.

Jadakiss is the same. His solo stuff I can take or leave, but his guest spots on the Made You Look remix, Reservoir Dogs and Rite Where U Stand were pure brilliance.
