Senior List
I am a big admirer of TW, Miller and the new administration. I understand the long term philosophy and stand by the strategy adopted to get there.
It’s simple – have a belief of the type of team you will need to win a grand final in 2011+.
Recruit, develop and drill the kids in the style of play that will get you there.
Play the kids on merit, making sure they are consistently playing that style at Coburg before they warrant senior selection.
At the end of the season turnover the kids that have been given a chance and not responding.
On average you should be able to develop 3-4 a season and over 5 years you basically develop a team. In the meantime you run your veteran’s up until the point that the kids can take over the veteran’s role.
No favouritism, no propping and swaying from the plan – just one clear direction.
However last night was “total meltdown” because TW and co. pushed the pendulum too far.
We played too many kids and played them at the wrong time and in the wrong position. We went into a game with 14 players under 50 games and only 4 with more then 100 games. We set ourselves up for the hammering from the opening bounce by keeping Johnston and Tuck on the bench. Smashed in the centre and in clearances we where 6 goals down before our coach reacted. But with a very, very young team it was too late as the rot had set in and Geelong had developed a confidence and run-on that was self fullfiling.
So why did we push the pendulum too far?
Where we reacting to the Gaspar axing and “over” trying to show our youth policy?
Where we “over” trying to show the media we are younger and better than the Hawks?
At 0-5 where we “over” trying to punish Tivendale, Krakeour and Polo?
By starting our experienced followers in Tuck and Johnston on the bench where we “over” trying to give our youth experience?
I think at 0-5 we have panicked and “over” tried to push our football strategy too far and too hard. It was a stubborn and defiant attempt by TW to show our supporters, veterans, media and football world our future that “overwhelmingly” backfired.
Time to temper things and get back to the more conservative "steady as she goes" approach we that we have practised during the last two years. TW and co. must bunker down and resist these sort of extreme radical reactions from surfacing again. Back to the plan Richmond.
