Overrated:
Judd's kicking (by the media, not bigfooty)
Rioli (hes not a better player than Judd WTF? Hodge, Franklin, Mitchell and Sewell all still better than him)
Heath Shaw....I just think the media overdo it
Jack Ziebell
Tony Abbot
Rhys Palmer
Courtney Dempsey

This is the thing that annoys me about some Victorian club supporters. As soon as someone from interstate is rated over there, and given some media attention, they are overrated. I agree, Dangerfield is probably receiving a bit more credit than deserved at this point in his career, but it is the impact he has with his possessions atm which is getting the media's attention, and for once it is nice this is being recognised interstate. Another thing, do you actually see many of our games, or are you basing your opinion from the highlights given in the media? Just curious.

No I have not seen many Adelaide games recently. I saw some impressive signs from Danger on Friday against Geelong, and against Essendon a few weeks back. My initial post wasn't suggesting Danger was over rated, simply highlighting a common trait amongst media types to blown up the tyres of any potential young talent in search of the games next Ablett or Judd.

Nearly all of Geelong's players are overrated

Ablett is a great footballer, possibly the best in the AFL, but he is not the "best footballer in the AFL by a wide margin"

Matthew Scarlett is (was) a great full back, but he is not the "best full back in AFL history"

Joel Selwood is an excellent footballer, but he is not yet in the elite category or top 5 in the AFL (Mike Sheahan)

Everyone would love to have Jimmy Bartel in their team, very good footballer, but he is not in the AFL's top 10 as many people would suggest. One of the dodgier recipients of the Brownlow in recent years. Tough, solid player. I don't begrudge him his Brownlow. I just think he lacks the typical brilliance and dynamism(?) of a Brownlow Medalist

Corey Enright, good footballer, but a perennial All Australian? Give me a break. He has one of the easiest gigs in the AFL. Same with Andrew Mackie. I'd love to see these guys taken out of their comfort zones and see how they'd fare.

Brad Ottens. I hear some commentators describe him as one of the "best ruckmen in the AFL." Are they serious? He hardly ever plays. You've got to play a majority of games to wear that tag.

Tom Hawkins. What's he ever done? (besides hit the post from 10m out in a Grand Final?)

Steve Johnson. Capable of some very good football and great goals, but he is also very erratic and prone to dodgy play. You put him in Richmond colours with the ball coming haphazardly and only 40 times per game and he'd be regarded as no better than Mitch Morton.

Cameron Mooney. Average footballer. Not bad. Not good. I prefer Trav Cloke.

J-Pod. Similar to Mooney and Johnson in that he's fed more chances than most AFL forwards. Kicks bags at Skilled Stadium against weak defences in one-sided games.

On and on I could go...

I'm not saying this as a wind-up for Geelong fans. Just expressing my opinion that Geelong are one of the best TEAMS in the AFL and have been so for the past four seasons, but this also leads to many people to overrate many of their players as individuals. That's just the way it goes. It's logical when you think about it.

Brent Prismall couldn't get a game with Geelong and he still can't get a game at Essendon. Go figure

Yeah you make a fair point.

Adam Goodes is currently the most overrated player in the game. Loved by the Swans fans and the media (not to mention the umpires) way too much relative to his actual output and effectiveness.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned him on this thread yet, but Cyril Rioli is also severely hyped up.

How is Goodes overated? I reckon he's underated. When talking about the top players in the game no one ever seems to mention this guy, You don't win 2 Brownlow Medals by fluke.

Someone doesn't like Geelong... :p

I have to admit I read the Sheahan and Robbo article and almost choked on my cornflakes...Had I flicked onto Big Footy by mistake? I respect both of those guys for their opinions most of the time, but that was an amateur piece of writing. The question I would put to those guys would be, how would Cyril go in Judd's position at Carlton? Tagged every week and needing to break 6 tackels to shoot out a handball. Maybe only Ablett, Hodge, Goddard, Hayes and Swan could do a reasonable job in the same boat. Judd is a superstar, Cyril is still a potential superstar.

No, actually I quite like watching Geelong games. It's just the inevitable commentary jizzfest which I find grating. It wouldn't be so bad if they praised Geelong's teamwork more often, this is where they beat most teams, but usually the commentators carry on as though there were 22 Supermen versus 22 mere mortals. And then a team like 10th-placed Adelaide hits the front and beats them and it makes you wonder if the Cats were sniffing Kryptonite at half time.

Yeah your probably right there. When you have a really good team alot of players are overrated to some extent, because great teamwork has a way of hiding the cracks that some may possess. However, I do disagree with your assessment of Enright and Bartel. Bartel is amazing and in some ways I think he is underrated, although your right on him not being the typical Brownlow winner. And Enright is mr consistent for the Cats.

Pretty decent evaluations though.

So many of you BF posters are out of tune with the game. Almost all players mentioned through out this thread are great footballers that are playing senior football because they're the best. I don't think any of them are over-rated.
Rioli, Pendles, Ablett, Selwood, Gibbs, Davis, Riewoldt... I can't believe the names being thrown about..
Get Real, this is a tough sport and these guys are the best !!!!

Rhys Palmer

Is he rated at all since he did his knee? You hardly hear anything at all about him any more.

He fully deserved his rating for his excellent debut year but he's completely dropped off the radar since then. Can't see how you could call him overrated personally.

edit - actually yes I can - you're a Hawthorn supporters who's still bitter your golden boy Rioli didn't get the rising star

You're doing it wrong

anyone calling scarlett overrated is simply showing how little they know about football

he's massively underrated, has never gotten enough credit for what he does

if he played for a melbourne based club he would have been aa fb every year since 2002

Overrated to me is someone that is hyped up by the media and supporters, but rarely lives up to the hype.
For me these are:
1. TRAVIS CLOKE
2. CAM MOONEY
3. STEVE JOHNSON
4. AARON DAVEY
5. DANIEL WELLS
6. GRIFFEN
7. GIANSURICUSA

There are a few more that I can't think of at the moment.

Fair enough, I see your point :thumbsu:

Sheeeeeeeeeit.

That may be the best post i've ever seen

I'd say that applies more to Fisher. He has not been as dominant as he was in 2009.

O'Brien's 2010 has been a massive improvement on his 2009, albeit he has been a bit quieter in the past two or three weeks. I think the only reason he has been a bit quiet is because of limited supply - the opposition aint getting it down there!!!

I think he had improved his rebounding but his kicking effieciency is down from what I have watched. Perhaps I am looking too much into it
