Pace & Skill

I think its a bigger inditement on the pool of talent available. The AFL is fast becoming a journeyman league. look at the 14-22 players in the last 2 premier teams and compare them against our 90s team or WCE or carltons 90s teams or Brisbane 2000s team or hawks late 80s teams.

This year's premiers whoever they are will be likely the same unless it's the Giants who bat pretty deeply with talent providing they have most of their list available.

I agree that the talent is now spread further amongst more teams. The counter argument to this is that everyone is now full time, so in theory should be honing their skills more, fitter etc. The frenetic pace of the game, pressure and zoning style may mean players have less time with the ball to dispose of successfully and look less skillful.

Neither of these points supports why we are still in the same position of being short on mids with pace when the lay person (us @BF) could see over 10 years ago this was an issue. We could argue the compromised draft years hurt us, but for me that's a cop out; every club has to deal with those. Perhaps we could've been smarter there somehow.

These are the 2 attributes which are now critical to a successful midfield. These players don't have it & the coaching/recruiting staff MUST address the situation:

Kasey Green - Slow & non-skilled. Surely can't play regular seniors next season if we are to improve.
Adam Simpson - Slow & non-skilled. Must be used in defensive/negating roles from now on. His poor disposal, lack of pace & sloppy clearances cost us time & time again.
Eddie Sansbury - Slow & Wasteful. He actually is capable of good disposal but under pressure, it falls apart. Showed his true colours in the finals. Back-up midfielder at best next season.

The BIG issue is when Grant, Sinclair, Swallow & Harris are in the midfield, that means we have 7 SLOW-MID-PACED midfielders. Is it any surprise we get exposed for a lack of pace through the midfield against the top teams (we only had 1 win from 6 games against the other prelim finallists this season)?

PACE, PACE & MORE PACE. This must be the emphasis for next season.

Yeah - problem is we’ve tried to plug these holes with trades/FA pick ups, rather then prioritising them in the draft.

From my perspective there is none more important then skill, it’s plagued the club for two decades, and I put it largely down to recruiting, however there’s gotta be a breakdown in the clubs development also.

In a sea of whingers, this OP stands out.

I also heard a rumor once that he was supposed to be funny. Dunno where the **** that came from.

18 years later...........still waiting for us to address the lack of skill & speed on our list. It's officially done my head in.

Pretty sure our effective disposals have improved alot and were better than Sydney late in the game (didnt check final). This could be due to those crappy kicks in the backline or the over handballing?

We clock up so many useless "effective kicks" courtesy of our chip, chip, chip movement of the ball.

Damaging, penetrating kicks - that's a whole different story.

Good listen on Hoyne last night about our ball movement.

Melbourne game was the outlier where we moved the ball quickly - speed rating of 110
Dogs, Crows & Swans losses were much slower - speed rating of 75

We have weapons front of center however we are not giving them opportunity to use it by playing slow. We also do not have the foot skills to play the precision short kick style, which apparently we do the most of any club in the league.

Big year for me this year.

20 year wedding anniversary and 20 year anniversary of complaining about our lack focus on pace and skill. Wife and I are going strong but think that we have higher chance of ending the streak than North right now
