Playford Council was forced to release documents detailing the cost of Mayor Glenn Docherty’s 10-day trip to China in May after an application under the Freedom of Information Act.

Tickets to the Port v Suns AFL game were not paid for by ratepayers but they will have to fork out $15,281.74 for other costs — including $1800 for a “travel allowance”, $3,253 for accommodation, $4,393 for flights, $994 for meals, $938 for “miscellaneous” items and $1,190 for tickets to a gala dinner.

A similar trip was taken by Onkaparinga Council, but neither council represents ratepayers in Port Adelaide’s AFL home base of Alberton"

Club chief executive Keith Thomas has returned from his latest trip to Hong Kong and Shanghai with even grander hopes of having Australian football introduced to more and more Chinese schools. So far, Port Adelaide has its “Power Footy” program in 15 schools, adding another two in Shanghai, during this week’s trip. There is hope to take this reach to 100 schools.

But there was an interesting challenge in explaining to the Chinese authorities just what game Australian football is.
