Re: ND Pick # 10 - Discussion

maybe not but thats where he played if the reports are correct?

SA U18 coach Brenton Phillips says: He's played predominantly as a key forward or a key back, but I actually think he has the ability to develop into a good midfielder. He has good touch, excellent endurance for a big man and also a good awareness when he's in or around the stoppages. People haven't heard a lot about Phil because he played a lot of school footy so you sort of lose track of him. He's originally from the ACT so he hasn't had a really big schooling in the game of Aussie rules and having played a bit of rugby he is a very strong and aggressive tackler.

He's played up forward for North's reserves and kicked a few bags. His profile even says that his kicking for goal is a feature. From the videos I saw and everything I read he certainly seemed like a better forward line prospect than Trengove.

How can you not be happy with the sound of this:

Date of birth: 30/8/90
Height: 196cm
Weight: 85kg
Club: North Adelaide

Bio: A tall defender with a strong attack on the ball, Phil Davis is strong overhead and his kicking on goal is a feature.

Re: ND Pick # 10 - Phil Davis - Discussion

* 3 reserves games for 10 goals, twice in best.
* 1 U19 game for 3 goals
* 2007 – 6 games in U17’s for 1 goal, named in best 4 times.

I like those stats. Could not really ask for more from his limited game time. Heres some other comments made about Phil Davis -

"thesaint: phil davis at st peters is one of the best players in the competition, his ability to play in any position is better than any other, his athletic ability is fantastic for someone that is around 6'5."

"Footballman: phil davis is a fair gun, 2 bad he did his shoulder and is out for 6 months."

"albyplus: The injured Phil Davis from SA would have to be a serious consideration"
"Anonymous: Great call!
Has slipped under the radar which is very understandable as he only played about a half of footy in the Champs against Vic Metro with a shoulder injury. Looked the goods against Watts early in that game as a defender but can certainly be used up forward and even through the midfield even though he stands at about 192cms.
Given his shoulder injury and the strength of this years draft, Id say he might slip to a 2nd round pick but mark my words whoever takes him will have a gem."

"DJ75: Wait for Phil Davis. He will get drafted and due to shoulder injury this year may slip a bit. Before that was a lock for CHB in the State U18 team. Played two reserves games for North and kicked a bag of goals in each game."

Adelaide appeared to have sprung the first surprise in the AFL national draft when they went for Phil Davis, rather than Jackson Trengove.
The phantom drafts held that the Crows would use their first pick at No.10 to take Trengove, a 196cm talent who can play in the ruck, up forward or as a defender.
But Adelaide recruiting manager Matt Rendell knew 12 months ago that Davis was his man.
"Six-foot-fivers from your home town who can play just about any position on the ground are hard to knock back," Rendell said.
"And (he's) really competitive.
"We were always going with Davis ... (from) about a year ago."
Rendell said Adelaide only became confident a week ago that Port Adelaide would use their pick at No.4 on Hamish Hartlett, rather than Davis.
In the meantime, Rendell had to do his homework on players such as Trengove, just in case, and he suspects that is how the talk developed.
Port Adelaide took Trengove at pick 22.
A shoulder injury meant Davis only managed four games this season in the lower levels with SANFL side North Adelaide.
But that suited Rendell, who noted that for the most part, it took Davis off the pre-draft radar.
The Crows' next selection at 28 was a familiar AFL name - Shaun McKernan, the younger brother of former North Melbourne premiership ruckman Corey.
"He's a really competitive person ... I've seen him play other positions, centre half-back, key forward," Rendell said of the young ruckman.
"He's a little bit different from the others, pretty quiet and shy, he likes to be by himself.
"He'll be a fantastic acquisition, he'll give 100 per cent all the time."
Shyness is clearly not an issue for the Crows' No.44 pick, utility Rory Sloane.
Asked about his weakness, Sloane joked: "Kryptonite".

Re: ND Pick # 10 - Phil Davis - Discussion

From Inside Football Magazine
Phil Davis - tall defender, North Adelaide, SA
DOB: 30/8/90 Ht:192cm Wt:83kg
"Phil didn't play a lot of footy this year because he injured his shoulder early on. Played a few reserves games early in the year up forward and kicked some goals, which was a credit to him because he played all his junior footy in defence. After injuring his shoulder the first time he came back and played, then did it again and required surgery in May, and didn't play again. Didn't do the testing at the draft camp but ran a 3.02 for his 20 metre sprint early in the year and 11 minutes for the 3km time trial so he's reasonably mobile for his size."
- North Adelaide developmental manager Neil Sanders

Re: New Player - Phil Davis

I remember seeing Phil Davis play his first reserves game for North Adelaide. A friend of mine said there was this very good player who normally plays school football playing his first game so i thought i would keep an eye on him. So that day i took some notes on him.

That particular day Davis kicked 4.1 from full forward and had took another mark about 30m out and couldve kicked another goal but he dished it off to Tony Armstrong who kicked the goal. He took another contested mark close to goal on a tight angle and once again dished it off to a team mate who goaled. So he couldve easily finished with 6 goals that day. Out of the 6 or 7 marks he took 3 of them were contested. One of these marks was where he just out bodied the full back and marked in the goal square and the other two contested marks he just stuck the big mits up and marked it in a pack situation.

I think along with Walker they will form a very good partnership in our forward line for many years to come. Davis is still very raw but we have definately picked the right player with our pick 10. His kicking for goal was also a feature on this day. He has a beautiful kicking action and can kick it a mile.

Nice report mate, thanks for that.

Re: New Player - Phil Davis

I think Neil Craig made it very clear that Davis was recruited with the CHF position in mind. Add to that he kicked 10 goals in his only 3 senior games at the Roosters so i'd imagine he will play predominantly up forward.

Sellar was recruited as a forward too but is having trouble getting a decent gig there at SANFL level.

I believe Davis stays at the Roosters and has played forward and back there, but was primarily known as a backman. Hopefully North do the right thing by Davis and play him up forward instead of just leaving him back.

Edit: If he does manage to replicate the form that saw 10 goals in 3 games, they'll be doing the right thing by North as well! :D

Re: New Player - Phil Davis

Clearly hes going to be a forward, you dont rate him at number 2 if you plan to play him as a defender.

Again, I know the Crows expect him to play forward. They also don't have the final say over where he plays at SANFL level, which is where he will almost certainly play the entirety of next year.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Hadn't seen this write-up before. I'm interested in his rugby background, he seems too lanky to have been a good rugby player but I guess it means he'll be a tough bugger! :D

Phil Davis - 2008 AFL Draftee Profile
Posted by Stewart Brown
November 26, 2008

Every year there is that player who hasn’t played a huge amount of football, has a background in other sports and is spruiked as a potential first round pick. Ladies and gentleman I bring you Phil Davis.

Height: 196cm
Weight: 85kg
Position: Key Defender/Key Forward
Club: North Adelaide

Who we think he may turn out like: Adam Hunter
Who we hope he doesn’t turn out like: Luke Livingston

The majority of Davis’s football career has been at school level. His 2008 season at North Adelaide in the SANFL was ruined by a shoulder injury meaning he was only able to play four games (in the Under 19s and Reserves).

Davis attacks the footy with ferocity and is a very strong mark. He has a rugby background which has helped him become a strong and aggressive tackler. Davis also brings some versatility to the table having played both back and forward at various stages of his junior career.

When Davis plays in the forward line he is an accurate set shot for goal and is a strong contested mark. He has very good endurance for a key position player so he can run his opponent around and get up the ground when playing forward.

Whilst there is a lot of upside to Phil Davis he does look to be a risky pick as he has not played a lot of football in the past 12 months so you can’t be too certain about how he will perform at the top level.

Expect one of the better sides to pick him up as they have the list to store him on for a period of time whilst they develop him into a league footballer.

What are your thoughts on Phil Davis and where he may end up? Do you think he is worth a first round pick? Leave us with your thoughts.

Re: #16 - Phil Davis

Davis' body type has mackie written all over him IMO. Thankfully he is a bit taller. Agressive tackler is a good sign as well thou, tippett is the same, he murders blokes when he tackles them.

Thats a bit unfair on Glenelg, 1/4 would be closer to the mark, 3/4 is most definitely spent on the bench

haha ;)

Davis sets his own standards

ADELAIDE recruit Phil Davis believes there’s more pressure on him internally, than externally, to perform in his debut season with the club.

Davis, 18, was snapped up by the Crows with pick No.10 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, but only started full training with the group last month.

The versatile tall injured his shoulder while representing South Australia in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in June and endured a slow recovery after undergoing a full reconstruction.

Last weekend, Davis returned to the field for the first time in almost eight months when he played two quarters of an internal trial with SANFL club North Adelaide.

“I didn’t have any setbacks, but I progressed a bit slower before I got to the club and I was probably about three weeks behind when I got here,” Davis told afc.com.au

“Since then, the club has been a bit more cautious making sure the strength is there and the range of movement is fine.

“It’s been a slower process than the usual six months out for a shoulder recon, but it’s better to be safe and at least it was in pre-season, so it should be nice and strong.”

Davis was kept out of contact drills during his rehabilitation. Instead, he spent his days working on his aerobic fitness with Physical Performance manager Stephen Schwerdt.

“There was a fair bit of running and leading involved and in the last few weeks we did a bit of wrestling,” he said.

“I did a bit of tackling and wrestling work with (Physical Performance analyst assistant) James Hanisch. It was a lot of game simulation work to help prepare me get back into playing games.”

Davis, unlike Adelaide’s other No.10 draft-pick, Patrick Dangerfield, has managed to avoid the limelight and public scrutiny in his first six months at the club.

The teenager said he didn’t feel any pressure associated with being a top-10 selection.

“I’ve had it pretty easy compared to Danger. I remember he was in The Advertiser almost every day last year,” Davis said with a laugh.

“I’ve been out of the media spotlight, being injured, which has been nice. There’s probably a bit more pressure internally, from myself, than from the media or anyone else.”

Coach Neil Craig has placed the same expectations on Davis as he has on Dangerfield and any other young player on the Crows’ list.

The 195cm, 85kg, key-position player has plenty or work to do in the gym, but Craig said Davis would get an AFL berth as soon as his performances warranted one.

“I understand our supporters and outsiders want to see these young guys and say, ‘Play them, we want to have a look’, but I think it’s bad policy just to have a look,” Craig said.

“Selection is based on performance and that’s why Patrick Dangerfield plays against Hawthorn this week.

“Patrick would’ve played irrespective of which players we rested.

“He earned a spot back in our team based on performance, just as Chris Schmidt did with an exceptional game last week for West Adelaide.”

Davis will play in a practice match against Port Adelaide at Alberton this weekend.

He said he would use the game to try and work his way back into form for the start of the SANFL season.

“I’d love to be playing AFL in the second-half of the year at some point, but realistically I’m not quite sure where I’m at,” Davis said.

“I’ll see how I go in the first few rounds. If I can play some good footy, Neil always says there are no expectations, so hopefully if I play good enough footy, I might get a go in the latter part of the year.”

I like Davis :) Also interesting to hear Craig say Danger would have played regardless of the dropping of senior players.

it's easy, find him a sanfl club that is willing to play him forward

he is a crows player and the club needs to protect it's investment, if that means players changing clubs then it needs to be considered

on a positive, I am sure Healy will be open minded
