The title was my views on the interpretation of the new rules the AFL seemed intent on enforcing.

Although Ottens clearly won the battle against Gaspar I felt some of the free kicks he received were pretty stupid (and there were some at the other end as well).

Also the 50 metre penalty against prismal was shocking. Why in gods name can't the return to the player be lofted?

Prismall free kick was rediculous. That is the first time I have seen that enforced, there needs to be a little bit of continuity. Either enforce every week or don't enforce it at all. What makes it worse is it came off the back of a perfect tackle by Bartel called push in the back. Prismall does the right thing a pushes Bartel away from the umpire and then get pinged. Then the ump spots a mystery free down the ground to Nathan Brown.

I think two of the calls against Gaspar were just bad calls. Not against the rules the ump just got it wrong.

I'm not against the hands in the back rule per se. There will no doubt be annoying examples of it. Heard on SEN this morning that there's a loophole too - if you clench your fist and make contact, it's legitimate and you shouldn't get pinged. Which is just bloody stupid, I hope they close that loophole.

Yes, the 50m penalty against Prismall was shocking, stupid, unwarranted.

maybe it's early and the umps are trigger happy but it just seemed to me that the backmen were not allowed to make any contact at all. If it keeps going like this Mathew Lloyd will kick 30 goals every game given his ability to take a dive when someone's fingernail may inadvertently brush against his arm.

they did this with the knocking of arms a few years back. Went hard then eased off on the calls. I think they are just trying to program the players not to do it then halfway through the season they will ease off

nice call LOL

I think the umpires still need some time to get it right and that's where the NAB cup should come into it. It is a pretty petty rule, but the good thing is that it brings back the power forwards and with players like Ottens, Nablett and Hawkins in our side our forward line looks very very strong and that rule contributes to that.

Well our backmen will be under the same scrutiny as other clubs, Egan will keep having to take those marks
