Hoops people in the States I spoke to about Mills around the Olympics all said precisely the same thing - too short for the modern NBA PG. The feeling was he would be a handy 2nd or third stringer. More Bassy Telfair than Chris Paul.

Personally I'd like to see him move schools; the West Coast Conference (Gonzaga aside) isn't that strong, so St. Mary's schedule strength will be important. If he can get last years numbers playing Pac-10 instead of West Coast - thats what gets him drafted.

I'd love to see him get drafted but I would think he is zero chance for the lottery. I think he is 50/50 to get drafted and if he does he is a solid 2nd rounder.

True however, Bogut playing in the MWC or whatever it is, is a relatively weak division and he got Utah deep in March Madness and still went no.1 in the draft.

I don't think its necessarily the schedule presented that these guys get graded on, but more so how the team does on the whole and the individual player in the big games.

Does moving school mean red-shirting for a year though? If so that would be a terrible decision from Mills.

And herein lies the rub. St.Mary's are unlikely to do that. And Bogut is a 7'0" player with great touch who was getting it done at both ends in Utah. Mills is a 6'1" PG. They are a dime a dozen.

It does insofar as his numbers within the WCC will be inflated. Mills is good enough to rack em up against Santa Clara and Pepperdine, but their non-conference schedule needs him to face up to some better quality schools and opponents.

FWIW, outside of the conference games against Gonzaga, St. Mary's presently have zero games against top 25 schools, despite being on the bubble themselves.



He's a much better chance of being drafted if his stats are earned against better quality opponents. And the best chance of that happening is at another school in a stronger conference.

Can't find anything that says a transfer requires a redshirt year.

redshirting is usually requested by an athlete or school, not imposed by the NCAA.
 
Every player in NCAA mens football and basketball that transfers must sit out one season. There can be exceptions though, for example Tyler Smith who was able to avoid the penalty as he transferred to Tennesse for "family reasons"

I'd like to add Johnny Flynn from Syracuse to the list of PG's better than Mills.

I agree with you on Curry; he will be making the shift to point guard this year as Jason Richards has now moved on. I'm also interested to see whether incoming all american combo guards Tyreke Evans at Memphis and Willie Warren at Oklahoma will play the point or not

DX has Flynn in the 2010 draft. Actually, having a look at their 2010 mock, there seem to be a lot less PG prospects in the first round. Might be in Mills' best interest to hold back another year.

As for next year, Brandon Jennings is the obvious one that needs mention, he'll be the 2nd PG off the board.

It basically means Mills is 4th-5th in line, and very rarely will you see that many PGs being drafted in the lottery.

edit: And just on Curry, I'm struggling to see what exactly he has that someone like Douby didn't. He moves without the ball a fair bit better, but he's still a 6"3 SG. I don't like his NBA career prospects at all.
 
He led a 10th seeded team to within a basket of the final four, that alone put his stock through the roof. I don't like him that much as a pro either, perhaps he could play the same role as Damon Jones when he was at the heat just knocking down three balls, hopefully without the shit haircut and the trash talking

Yeah, that's probably a fair comparison. Although I quite like Damon Jones' trash-talk :cool:

I was stunned Curry didn't come out last year, will turn out to be a poor decision in retrospect I reckon.

Thanks for that tip, I'm not familiar with Flynn or Warren but will keep an eye out for them...There's alot of hype about Evans but I'll just wait to see how the freshmen goes to begin with, although if he's anything like Rose and Mayo, I'm sure GM's will be all over him.

That's a good point and might apply to Hansbrough too come draft night. If he can't get over this injury he's carrying there will be big doubts in GM's minds...
 
That was strange. The live stats (on both Yahoo and ESPN) at about 7:30 Australian CST. That can't be right.

Great game from Patty, though, it would seem. Luke Nevill started alright recently with the Utes, also.

Slighty off topic for a moment, but For those of you who are seemingly more informed than me (not hard), has there been any more news on the prospects of the likes of Nathan Jawai?

He is a massive man (6ft10 285lbs) and he can play . He has a nice soft touch shot as well as an inside power game, although perhaps a touch slow around the court.

I know he is currently on the Raptors roster but I heard something about him having to undergo some medicals on an heriditory Heart issue, but given this being all clear, would he be a realistic chance of cracking the NBA. And if so, when is he likely to get a gig at some game time?

Id say after hes cleared to train, he'd be playing maybe 2-3 weeks after that fingers crossed.

He was getting good minutes in the pre-season.
 
Well he didn't actually play any pre-season, he only played summer league, which is a massive step below even just pre-season games.

I've heard some shocking reports that his career may well be over before it's started.
 
Just finished watching the replay and Mills was very impressive. If he keeps having games like that I'd be pretty confident he'll be a lottery pick. But for this to happen he consistently needs to get similar amounts of steals, as well as keep that 3% as close to 40% as possible (if not better). I still think however he's money stat is assists. I don't think 5 is a huge amount for a starting point guard although I do understand he is the number 1 scorer and many of his passes were to team mates missing great looks.

You'd think that Wake Forest would knock off Cal St. Fulerton so St. Mary's next game on ESPN should be that one in about a weeks time iirc.
