Paddy Ryder from Port Adelaide has declared that he wants to come back to Victoria.

I think he is EXACTLY the type of player we need at Geelong.

I think one of our deficiencies has been the ruck. Since the days of having Brad Ottens, we haven't had a good ruckman since.

I have said before that I think our current crop don't fit the bill

Rhys Stanley is limited.

Zac Smith's papers are stamped.

Ryan Abbott hasn't come on.

Estava and Blicavs are better suited to other spots on the ground.

Getting a top-quality ruckman on the market like Paddy would be great. He can play ruck and up forward, and I can see him swinging between the ruck and forward with Estava Ratagoulea and giving us more flexibilty.

I would rather we chase someone like him than Jack Steven.

Do you agree? Would you want Patrick Ryder at the Cats?

Based on 2019 form Ryder's no real upgrade on even Rhys Stanley - less disposals and hit outs per game and 2+ years older than Stanley.
Ryder was a very good player for a few years there but we've seen the results of trading for 'ready-made' ruckmen post-2011 (McIntosh, Smith, Stanley); there's a reason clubs are willing to let them go or watch their contracts lapse.

I've said previously that I think it's time we bit the bullet and went the Steven King route; identify the best junior big man and trade our way into getting the necessary draft pick to grab them - big risk for big reward hopefully.

My thoughts as stated in the trade thread:

I'd also question if he's actually a significant upgrade on what we got with Stanley. Only twice in his career has he actually averaged more hitouts than what Stanley has over the last 2 seasons when he has started to play as the #1 ruck without sharing in our side, and Stanley then seems to actually get more of the ball when in play, plus he is younger. Seems like it's the idea that the grass is greener on the other side but I'm not so sure:

Stanley season averages over his career:

Ryder season averages over his career:

Not if we keep Stanley.I am a big Stanley fan.
Ryder has been dropped several times this year at Port.
Stanley will reveal his importance to this team this September

Honestly, he looks cooked Goldstein tore him apart recently he just looked slow and ineffective forward. A fair reason he played a good amount of SANFL this season.

I would much prefer over all this Jacobs, Ryder old types who require decent salary and job security. If we can't find one in the draft mature age. Go out and look at a pruess from Melbourne Darcy via a fremantle trade I think is a much higher chance than anyone is giving it credit for currently.

With Taberner, Hogan, Lobb on that list it's hard to carry a genuine Ruck.

When Ryder went from Dons to PA maybe yes.... but now.. no.
Too old, too foten injured and when fit from memory and the eye test does not really seem to give more than Stnaley does when Stanely is on.

Rather keep the incumbent and save the powder, whatever we have, on something going forward. Look at Englisha and Marshall.. you can take rucks in the draft and develop them over time.

That said, id take Goldy for 2 years. Seems far more reliable and durable. Cost could be prohibitive however

Too old. Will go to St Kilda.

To me ..less about age ..more about questions .. is he really being good enough anymore? He has been passed by Ladhams .. the 9th tallest player on the Port list at 197cm.. IF we bring in anyone this age they would be better at the right height imo... spring tends to go as players get older ..certainly it goes quicker than height. Certainly ..if we bring in any mature player , we must have a better long term plan than we do have now.

I think they’re related points. He would have been a good pickup when Port got him but not now.
