Is one of the most underrated defenders in competition.

Provides plenty of run and rarely gets beaten. Most goals kicked on him come from zoning and counter attacks when he has no time to get back on his man.

A bit in Michael Sexton role of being underrated

Feel that some even on this board do under rate him. Mainly because he appears clumsy with his movements and disposal. However he rarely stuffs up and in this case appearances are not true. He is very composed in all areas of the game and potentially an AA defender in the not too distant future.

became a fave of mine in his first year. There was just something about him (could be that he ran like an emu packing an extra chromosome)

Not that it matters, but i think other teams fans are starting to click just how good he is

Quick question to anyone that knew him as Jr - was he always a defender? Or did we turn him into one ?

He ain't underrated on this board.

Bower = beast.

That is so true Faz. Bower had a terrific year in 2009, and hopefully going by his performance on Thursday night, he'll have another good in 2010. He reads the play beautifully, and is able to get a spoil in most contests. Very important cog in our backline.

I think Bower is a great player, and a huge asset to Carlton. But he really, really needs to work on his kicking. Short of editing sections of last night's game, I don't know how else to prove this.

Numerous examples last night of his short kicks missing targets, putting his teammates under unnecessary pressure, and in one case giving up a goal as a result. I know he's a Carlton favourite, but surely other people can see this?

Sometimes I wonder if I'm watching the same game as everyone else.

Not going to be popular, but here it goes...

Couldn't agree more Blues...

He gets pumped up on this board because of his kamikaze eye catching style...

His clangers on Thursday night were terrible and he even dropped an overhead mark when not under pressure...

Out of the 3 key defenders we have at the moment Bower is rated 3rd and with Austin due back soon I think his position will come under pressure because Austin is stronger overhead as well as quicker across the ground...

His comparison as a player is Christou(for those old enough to remember) and Ang had a cannon for a left foot and pace to burn as well as being an AA...

Bower still has some work to do...

I rate Austin as a potential player, but it's a incredibly stupid comment to say Bower is slow and will be under pressure from a player who is yet to have a breakout game. Bower didn't have a problem kicking with his wrong foot on Thursday and hitting the target.

Gun.

The comparison to SOS is a better one than the Christou comparison. Like SOS, Bower is all arms and legs with his distinctive running style, but he's in control and a good spoiler. Bower will only get stronger after another couple of pre-seasons. As a comparison, Geelong's CHB in Harry Taylor was still playing WAFL at 21 years of age and a rake in his debut season.

Plenty of upside.

Did I say slow????? Read again...

As for the SOS comparison, no chance... SOS was a marking machine even as a junior... Bower is a puncher just like Christou..

SOS had legs like his old man and could hold ground against bigger players...

I was at the game and have watched it again since... He wasn't the only one that missed targets but on a night when our field kicking was the best it's been for a while, Bower was poor to say the least...

As for Harry Taylor, strong over head and an accurate kick... Two things that Bower doesn't have...

FMD.....how many times do I have to prove morons that say Bower is a poor kick wrong?

It's like a ****ing broken record.

Bower is an excellent kick, one of the more accurate in our side - and he has been since forcing his way into the team a few seasons ago.

A few clangers here and there doesn't change that fact. EVERY PLAYER MISSES TARGETS.

If we had a full team of players that were able to kick as well as Bower we'd be a much better team.

I'm sick of morons that think a poor kicking action = poor accuracy & efficiency. Because it quite clearly doesn't.

Bower's dog-ugly kicking action is reasonably effective, I reckon. His disposal is not his strength, but to be honest I don't care. His primary job is to stand the best forwards in the comp, and I think he's pretty good at that, with scope for rapid improvement to VERY good.

He definitely looks unco... the reason I mentioned SOS was as an example looking unco clearly does not mean you can't be a very effective player.

I like mentioning that Bower was AA CHB at under 19 level. That he's good is not a surprise. This guy DOES have pedigree, even if he's an unc. :p

Fair enough... Didn't say it would be popular...

Not sure about using the word 'excellent'...

Put it this way, I would prefer the ball in JR's hands anyday, by the way, I never had a crack at Jordy, ever...

I'm glad your sticking by Bower...

96% disposal efficiency, no clangers, according to the H/Sun stats. FWIW, Bower is nothing like Christou. Christou was a winger/HB who would have no hope of standing a Franklin/Riewoldt/Jon Brown. I think you are confusing Christou with someone else.

If you go look up "Woof's" vital stats, he was actually taller and a whole lot heavier than you recall. But yes, he WAS a HBFer, rather than KPD.

Exactly...

He also had Sexton playing at CHB as well...

My thinking is that Bower would be better suited to playing that roll but we don't have anyone for CHB...

Christou was 190cm (about 6'3 in the old money) & 90kg. Bower is marginally taller & heavier at 192cm & 92kg, but I think it is fair to say he is a lot stronger than Christou ever was.

As I stated in my previous post, Christou would never have been capable of standing Riewoldt/Franklin/Jon Brown.

FWIW, Sexton was 192cm & played at 96kg. I suspect Bower will probably bulk up to about 94-95kg by the time he reaches his mid '20s.
