IF it happened- and I don't think it will, I'd like it to be at our first home game next year, not before the Crows game this year. How distracting would THAT be?

Distracting, or would it shape our steely resolve for one last crack this year? Galvanise our young 'uns with what it takes to be a Club Legend?

Well done Chappy. So many great memories, both inspirational and funny. Nobody did unhappy better than our Chappy.

The Essendon bit doesn't count. Come home and teach the young 'uns to be hard at it.

Maybe you're right. He can give the players a rev up before the game pre-game speech. ;)

Tragedy he didn't remain a one club player, doing his bit in the ones when required and mentoring those coming through at other times. Wonderful player for us but lost some shine when he decided to choose dosh over allegiance.
I don't think dosh was the issue. He just wanted to play senior footy. Probably suspected the body would let him down, thus looked for the security of a 2 year contract.

He's no GAJ, no Bundy, no money-hungry deserter.

Not a tragedy. just good business. No shine lost. No one will remember the muffled drums era at the end of his career.

Probably my favourite player during our run of success. Perfect combination of hardness, pure ability, and passion to his football, the likes of which you rarely see. He helped to instigate the invigoration of the playing group in '07, and whilst there was much embellishment from the media, regardless of any pact, he exuded determination and a drive to win when playing the Hawks during the 09-13 streak, with courageous efforts that saw us eek out wins again and again. He won us so many games off his own boot, dragging the playing group to follow him for the ride, including the '09 GF. He's a Geelong champion, a legend, who I think represented everything the 07-11 playing group was all about. It is no coincidence that the team that lost to the Hawks in the '13 PF was devoid of Chapman's influence, and it's also no coincidence that the side began playing its worst football since '06 once he left.

His uneventful stint at Essendon should be forgotten, and in time I'm sure it will be. I maintain that leaving this man, who thrived in big games and rose to the occasion so many times, on the bench in his 250th in a QF at home was the worst move any coach could make. Chapman even made a point of demonstrating what a blunder it was the following week.

He should absolutely come home to do the lap of honor in front of fans who really appreciate him, but I can understand why the relationship with the club and the coach would still be sour after they turned his back on him, driven by some personal agenda of Chris Scott's to see a club legend's career finished prematurely. Still, he deserves that send off more than the likes of McIntosh and Rivers.

Well said Biggy_Boy, I actually think his value to the club and his actual onfield output is slightly undersold by many; he was immense for a long time.
Won his only B&F when Geelong was a near-rabble in '06, and was a committed and consistent player for us long before the breakthrough in '07.

Before the hammies started to go he was one of the best kicks I've seen at Geelong, whether in general play or having a shot on goal; his neat chips always found a target, his snaps were on par with Steve Johnson's, he could bomb it 50+ with accuracy and he was always confident and delivered when taking the pressure shots.

You mentioned his hardness at the contest, his ability and passion; I'll add another string to his bow, Chappy had a great football brain and made it look very simple at times.

I think the roar of CHAPPY is probably the one of I let rip with loudest and most often post-Ablett snr, absolutely loved the short, stocky, bald #35.

I was under the impression that Chapman wanted a 1 year deal but the club would only give him a 10 game contract.
Can someone clarify for me exactly what the contract situation was please?

Congratulations, Biggy. I was absolutely certain that nobody could twist a post in a "farewell Chappy" thread into some regular coach bashing but you've nailed it from two directions!

Lost zero shine. Did we really have to start this circle jerk in this thread?

I hope that at some stage Chris Scott acknowledges he made a mistake in not trying harder to keep Chappy at Geelong. Contributed so much towards our premierships. He was our best player in the 2013 SF against Port. Very unlucky to be rubbed out for the Prelim final against the Hawks. Compare what he did versus what Fyfe has just got cleared of this week. With Chappy in the team we would have beaten the Hawks to get into the 2013 GF.

Didn't intend the post to be coach bashing. It's hard, however, to comment on the culmination of Chapman's time at Geelong without referencing some dubious decisions made by the coach.

Give it to Chappy!

Lost count how many times I said this over the years..

FFS, just give it to Chappy:D!! When he was free in the left-hand pocket, I'd say his targeting was well over 95% accurate. Never really saw him miss those across-the-shoulder snaps.

A pocket battleship.

Am I the only one still bitter that he didn't win the norm in 07? Had money on him that year! What a player.

You almost made it without a bitch about the coach.......almost

You are perfectly entitled to remain in denial on this matter. However, if you believe the likes of Bartel and Enright would have chosen the path Chappy did given the same offer and circumstances you are living in a parallel universe.

Chappy was great for us and will remain a revered player. Nonetheless he was the one who took some of the shine off his time with us by his decision not to put back into a club that had given him so much. As I'm confident Boris, Jimmeh and many others would have in the same circumstances. Them's the facts!
