Nonetheless he was the one who took some of the shine off his time with us by his decision not to put back into a club that had given him so much.

Chappy played for well under what he should have been paid for years at Geelong just so you, myself and every other supporter could witness premierships.
He owes the club sweet **** all!

No shine taken away in my view, Chappy will always been remembered as a premiership winning champion who consistently produced in September.

He should absolutely come home to do the lap of honor in front of fans who really appreciate him, but I can understand why the relationship with the club and the coach would still be sour after they turned his back on him, driven by some personal agenda of Chris Scott's to see a club legend's career finished prematurely. Still, he deserves that send off more than the likes of McIntosh and Rivers.
You mean that agenda to "play the kids" which Chapman acknowledged when he left the Cats?

That agenda that you were fully behind a month ago?

I am behind it. There was no good reason for Paul to be forced out, though. Why, to make room for Burbury?
Was he forced out? It was my understanding he was offered a deal which he refused because it didn't involve as many games as he wanted. And we weren't going to guarantee him games ahead of youth.

You are perfectly entitled to remain in denial on this matter. However, if you believe the likes of Bartel and Enright would have chosen the path Chappy did given the same offer and circumstances you are living in a parallel universe.

Chappy was great for us and will remain a revered player. Nonetheless he was the one who took some of the shine off his time with us by his decision not to put back into a club that had given him so much. As I'm confident Boris, Jimmeh and many others would have in the same circumstances. Them's the facts!

a champion of the club

will be regarding in the same breath as sj, bartel, corey, enright.

any cats fan that hates him or places him in a lesser regard because he left is no cats fan in my mind

He had to leave as told only minimum games and pay cut right down from his already less than market contract; and if anybody here was told at their job tomorrow your getting a 50 percent pay cut and a shitier job , you would bloody well leave, easy shit to spout when its not your pocket and only typed from a keyboard.

Thanks for coming over from the Richmond board to tell us that, we had no idea why Chapman left of course.

I disagree that he "took some of the shine off his time with us by his decision". The club and Chapman certainly parted on amenable terms, both understood the others' position and as others have pointed out here, Chapman owed the club absolutely nothing whatsoever. It's up to both club and player to find amenable terms for any new contract, not just the player, and so Chapman left at a point where it became clear that what he wanted to do with his career was different to what Geelong could offer. He'd earned that right, too.

One of the greats.

- as noted above, fantastic finals player. Arguably should have had the 2007 Normy as well as the 2009.
- massively hard to match up on, strong, KPFs like marking presence on occasion, great finisher, great play reader making up for not great pace.
- fierce competitor - Hodge like presence on the forward line
- was the man who led the honesty session after the North loss in 2007 that sparked the amazing 2007 run and commenced the golden era.

Only knock was his discipline - very silly his late hit in that Port Final. Always played well against Hawks and his absence maybe was why didn't make the granny that year.

Wonderful player for us but lost some shine when he decided to choose dosh over allegiance.
I was under the impression that Chapman wanted a 1 year deal but the club would only give him a 10 game contract.
Can someone clarify for me exactly what the contract situation was please?

The official line is that he wanted two years, and the club would only give him one. Saying that it's about money is speculation, but we know that the length of contract was a factor.

Some people have bandied around some notion that the club only offered him 10 games, which sounds a little tenuous given no player has ever been stood down when in form before for breach of contract.

Didn't intend the post to be coach bashing. It's hard, however, to comment on the culmination of Chapman's time at Geelong without referencing some dubious decisions made by the coach.
But there would be half a dozen people involved in list management- I doubt that it would've been 100% Scott's decision.

If I were in Melbourne I'd be heading to the Dons v Tiges game in my Cats gear to make it clear why I was there. Should have a small army of people there to cheer him off the ground. It's just not going to mean the same to Dons supporters.

I made plans tonight to do exactly this.

Anyone going to the match want to take along a mini blue & white hooped guernsey with the #35 on the back for his son - a nice little present to say good luck in retirement and we can't wait to see the name Chapman in the hoops again.

The man who bled Blue and White and willed himself and his team to many a win.

I'll never forget how he could have been the difference for Geelong to play in the 2013 Premiership - if you'd only been put on the field earlier in THAT game.

All the best for the future and thanks for all the great memories, Chappy! :thumbsu:
