Can anybody tell me what trades we did to get either of these 2 guys to the Swans a few years ago.

We urgently need these type of players to mentor and "smarten" up our midfield and give it some class.

Whatever trades we did back then, it was worth it, and no way 2005 would ever have happened without Willo.

Kirky's not that type of midfielder and neither is Jude.

McVeigh, Moore, Bird, Jack, Veszpremi, etc, need an on field mentor. We just need some class.

It's been done before, who's out there and what do we have to do to get them?

*Veszpremi. Sorry, I just had to correct ;)

Yeah, I was looking at back games in 2005 and Williams had an on field presence even when he didn't have an overly influential impact otherwise. Kirk is the leader and the mentor for the whole team and the way he's stepped up his game this year is phenomenal; but I understand what you mean. Goodes can step into the role, but is a way off doing that.

Classy mid. First person that comes to my mind is Cuz, but he's not exactly the "ideal" image and mentor we want to project to the future of our team until he's reformed for a long time yet.

we need a strong key position backman more than a midfielder i think. But i do like your thinking.

Goodes needs to step into the role you speak of.

Hmmm. Hear what you say, he is our best player and as good as he is, I don't reckon he's the type of player to be a midfield leader.

Schwass and Willo were very calm and great option takers with beautiful delivery. I thought that maybe Schnieder or Buchanan may have been the guys to step up, but one's gone and Amon, sadly not the man either.

If only Malceski didn't get injured during the pre-season. I believe they were going to have him play further up the ground and his skills would have added class to the midfield.

....

mmmmeee finks u know the answer?

Shannon Grant ( B&F Roo N Smith P'ship) swap plus 2nd rounder for schwass.... yes we lost!!!! but had nothing in the cards dealt anyway... was always gong back

Willo waseasier but super complicated... no club will ever take Swans lightly at the recruiting table again!

Vez ,DOK ,Meridith (even young Smithy) are far better options.... btw Brabazon won a best in WA league under 18 trophy as a midfielder..... they are there..... it just means the right time to BLOOD em!

It's exciting!:thumbsu:

i was sure it was going to be malceski til he went down preseason
he's back but at the moment he's not the same

Me thinks you are wrong, if I knew I wouldn't have asked. :confused:Pretty simple.

I guess the type I'm looking for is a "general" which Schwass was, also Bell for Freo, that type of player.

Willo wasn't your classic "general" type but won a best and fairest and also AA when he was traded to the Swans but definately was the leader of the Swans midfield.

Agree. We could do with a midfield enforcer/general type but don't know who. A Paul Kelly type who just frickin busts packs open through sheer will

You raise a good point. TBH I think we need a little more class right across the paddock. Our skills and decision making yesterday (and on many previous occasions) were deplorable. You can't consistently kick to the opposition, or kick often to a 1 on 2/3 and expect to beat the top few sides. And our movement into our forward line has been worrying to say the least.

Guys like Schwass hardly ever missed targets. We could definately use someone of that calibre.

i think schwass and cresswell got by more on reputation than performance the last year or so of their careers
i seem to recall often getting frustrated that they both missed targets too frequently and never came under the same harsh scrutiny focused on others
certainly, williams from memory was much more reliable

YES, no seriously, YES!!!
The thing about Willo & Schwatta was that they came to Swans in the twilight of their careers & whilst not having outstanding seasons or being AA or the like they "re-ignited" their footy prowess & both won B&F'S @ Swans ,as did other recruits (Schauble,Lockett & Hall),
Looking through the other clubs lists of recent B&F winners, nobody really stands out that we reaistically could lure, apart from Cuz & if he was seen to be capable of fulfilling a role similar to a Willo or Schwatta around the club & on the training track then by all means ...but there are no guarantees in life & its a fine balancing act of whether the powers that be feel he's worth the risk. But,yes he does fit the mould of the footballer we'd need
