Obviously this seems a very stupid call. The guy is a talented goal kicking machine. Perhaps one of the most valuable players in the whole comp but anyone and everyone can do with some objective pointers.

If i were coaching him, i'd give him 3 suggestions:

1) If your being triple teamed, lead inappropriately early or wide to give other forwards some space.
2) If a defender is blocking where your leading, give away a free kick early in the game and make sure he knows to be fearful if standing in front of you.
3) Occasionally (perhaps once a game), flick your eyes up and provide some bone crunching shepherds. IE Stand at CHF, and instead of demanding the football call the midfielders to run in your direction.

I know my opinion doesnt really count here but this would probably be a bad idea right at the moment

Nah i'm talking about the stationary block. ALA Luke Webster specialty. Just creates so much room for midfielders when everyone is thinking about applying blocks.

Even so...maybe leave it to Luke who we can afford to have suspended. Pav should be playing the ball not the man. I wouldn't trust the tribunal to take being stationary into account this year, especially if the player in question happens to be in purple.

The first two points are right on the money however.

That one there also rings of suspension to me.

The one thing I think he needs to work on is his defensive game. Yeah he can kick goals and leads well but he doesn't work hard enough off the ball. He has imporoved but I still think he could chase more and lay a bit more pressure on the opposition when he doesn't mark the ball. Just my 2c, he is a fantastic player and I love him.

I can't fault him. He has stepped up every year that he has been with the dockers, he just keeps getting better and better.

Yeah it'd be nice if Pav could incorporate a bit more controlled aggression into his game. Give us a Carey-esque intimidating type leader out there.

But I think he's just too nice a bloke to ever fully become that. Not that I'm complaining though.

I think Pav is "up", and the rest of the squad need to lift for us to take the next step. He will step up more, and that may include some aggression, but i don't want to see the Matty Lloyd "mock" aggression.

A couple of seasons ago this happened when Pav took a hit to the butt-ock in a game at the MCG. Pav became the decoy and Medhurst kicked 3-4 in a half of footy.

So this might work if some other forward are actually down there. I fear the midfield will then kick inappropriately wide or early, and still not go for the other options.

2) If a defender is blocking where your leading, give away a free kick early in the game and make sure he knows to be fearful if standing in front of you.
Just get Dean Solomon to do your blocking for you.

See point 2.

Pav tends to be a seagull but over the last few seasons has got better at getting in the middle of the contest and using the big body to allow smaller players a bit of wiggle room, or winning the contest himself. What this costs us though is unerring accuracy when he does stand off and get the ball fed to him.

I agree with the comments on his defensive pressure. I'm not sure how he stacks up against the other 100kg forwards. Neitz, Q. Lynch, Fevola, J. Brown, Richo are not that well known for the defensive pressure either. I think that its because they have no 'closing' speed.

The fev has a bit of defensive pressure, but you are quite right, the big guys find it very hard to run anyone down, unless its a blindsiding situation. Mcphalin is about Pav's height, but hes about 15kg lighter, which enables him to get a bit more speed. I would rather have Pav as a power forward, than have him do a job Farmer in particular takes great pride in.

Pav does need to stop looking at the ump as much as he does though, yeah we know he gets scragged, but we also know the umpires love to ignore Interstate teams getting scragged.. i think he just needs to get on with it.

1-Hang around in dead space therefor feeing up 2 teammates
2-The kicking player should be going then for the 2nd or 3rd option , therefor peeling off as soon as the ball is about to be dropped on the boot
3-No way do you put your body on the line unless the ball is to be won , stray knees in the back from disgruntled defenders hurt
