It's inconsequential now of course, but mid way through the third quarter Pavaulenko had a simple set-shot for goal to blow the lead out to 29 points and practically shut the gate on us.

He uncharacteristically pulled it left, to take the margin out to 24 points, before we began the charge that saw us go into the final charge a few points up and seemingly with the momentum which would see us home with the breeze.

At the time he missed that shot I thought of Bruce McAvaney's pet calls regarding Carey and his would-be contemporaries Chris Grant and Warren Tredrea.

"Carey would have kicked that. That could be very costly."

Turned out it wasn't given Freo's blistering finish, but it would've been an interesting story in Monday's papers had it proved so, especially given Pav's status at Freo, his links with SA and the Crows and the crucial stage that the Fremantle Football Club are at now.

What a crock of sh*t...

Pav is one of the best shots at goal in the Afl...as good a shot at goal as Carey, without doubt.

Was a bad miss - yes

I'm sure a Crows supporter, you'll remember Carey's misses in the '98 GF!

Did you read the post at all or are you still coming to terms with basic literacy? A is for Apple, etc.

absolutely terrifying!

DT, of course you're going to confuse the BF simpletons, using words like uncharacteristically. What were you thinking?

I think Pavlich is allowed to miss a shot every now and then. Geez.

Preferably not 20m out to ice the game against the ladder leader away from home when you're after a top-4 spot for the first time in your history, though.

Was the premise of my post really that hard to understand? I wasn't bagging Pavlich - I'm an admirer and hope he does somehow make his way home - just making an observation regarding the potential consequences that miss could easily have generated. Geez.

I know, it was a bad miss.

But who cares?
The thread is not so much about Pav's ability but more so about the hypothetical implications in the media and on forums had it proved costly.

There must be something wrong with me DT.

I knew exactly where you're coming from, because I stated at the time that miss would be the turning point in the game if we happened to win. And it did allow us to make a charge and get our beaks in front at 3/4 time.

Equally, and sadly this time I was right, when Welsh missed a set chance that a school boy should kick in the last quarter, I made the equal and opposite statement to the Pavlich one.

And so it proved. :(

I must admit I was very surprised when he missed it. So much so that I yelled out "He obviously wants to play for us" to the delight to all those around me :D
I thought of exactly the same thing, and was explaining to my sister about the whole Pavlich link to Adelaide (she's a one eyed Reilly supporter so really excludes every other player in the league). Once he missed the goal, instantly said that he's trying to drop his value to give u a better run at him. He IS our missing link.

The comments such as "Carey would have kicked it" etc are used in the instance a game is on the line, in the balance and at a crucial stage. At the time of Pav's miss, it was half way through the 3rd quarter, and Freo were up by 24 points and looking safe. Had the margin been closer, and closer to the end of the match, Pav would have taken more time, and made sure it went through, don't worry about that.

I know that because he's done it countless times.

Having 2 blokes hanging off him all day and to play the game he played shows what a champion he is.

GUN.

Note: I sense some envy :)
