Peel Thunder - 2016

What is a weak draft ? We just picked up Balic and Tucker with non first round picks.
Pick 61 is irrelevant.
C'mon Fred, he was picked with our 4th pick. Surely if our recruiters felt there was a high chance he was going to fix our main deficiency they would have used an earlier pick to secure him? Even if he doesn't debut at all this year and got to the necessary fitness level for AFL by 2017, I would still call that a win for a 26yo pick #61. I think he probably will debut this year but I wouldn't expect him to kick bags of goals in his first few games. There are plenty of WAFL stars that amounted to nothing in AFL. I just want us to be more realistic so we aren't disappointed when he probably under-delivers on some of the huge expectations out there. And if he over delivers then it is still a win win. Tabs is the same, needs time to develop. We are one of the best teams in the league, so a recruit not only has to reach AFL standard but an even higher standard to break into our team. Yarran probably has a way to go yet, like all the draftees. Luckily he looks like he has the necessary talent, but has a heck of a lot to learn, and a whole new physical level to go to. I'm not sure he can do that by Feb/March but you obviously do.

Yep.
I reckon he will be the steal of the draft.

Grand theft. We are being said to have stolen Harley Balic and Darcy Tucker as well.
These 2 look like they're going to be soooooooooooo good.
And I'm with you on the Yarran thing too. Pick 61 isn't reflective of his ability or talent. Everything external to football is what affected his draft position. His goal kicking at training is a thing of beauty

Were you there when Yaz and Harley were kicking on goal with snaps from the 50 mtr boundary line?
It is really bloody exciting to think what these two offer in our forward line.
Set shots, on the run and across the body snaps; the lot was on display.
They are bloody show offs the pair of 'em.

I'll have to talk to Shane about keeping a few tricks up his sleeve.

Interesting take. I don't think this will be far off if we can get our service to him right. Have been watching a lot of our 2015 games in the break and watched the MCG game against the Dees yesterday. Garlett really looked to have our defence under pressure purely on the back of the separation he was able to get on the lead and his ability to convert. Watching Mayne and Pav continually getting swamped by defenders when the ball comes in, or watching our mids kick it over the heads of Balla and to a lesser extent Sonny, is so ****ing frustrating. So, if we can have Yarran leading at pace and converting from outside fifty we'll be laughing.

Great in theory but harder to execute

Other mature agers have been Barlow, Mzungu and Spurr. They were all really cheap. Ballantyne the exception. Yarran at 61 was around the going rate.

Yeah, it's incredibly rare to see mature agers picked up below pick 50. And Ballantyne was 20 or 21 when drafted (so barely a mature ager), just won a Sandover and was the leading goalkicker in the WAFL (and had some of us going into meltdown because we wasted a 2nd rounder on him - he was expected to be a late pick prior to the draft).

Yarran was picked to make an immediate impact. You don't take 26 year olds with no AFL experience otherwise. I'd be surprised if he doesn't at least get a go at some stage during the year. And if he doesn't make an impact he will be delisted at the end of his 2 year contract at the latest.

Nah, that's what I do.
If pick 61 plays 15 games in his debut year, that's a draft steal.

Don't be so positive :)

From the little I've seen of Yarren he's played really well. Not sure if he will play 15 games this season but if he does he will be another inspired late pick.

The other possibility is that he is depth. We do have a small forward who rarely plays a whole season.

Well, in that context yes he could be called depth. We now have an extra two high class players added to our forward complement; and with that comes added pressure on the incumbents to perform, and be available.

On a slightly related not to your post I really like the idea of Weller playing back for a year or so. I agree we lack a small defender with elite pace.

I think that is what Sheridan is being groomed for. Not that he's necessarily super quick over short distance but he runs well in straight lines and carries the ball.
Weller is better further up the ground sending the ball inside 50.

I think Sheridan's better distance running makes him more suited to a midfield role than Weller. I still think Weller has to build his tank more to play midfield at AFL level on a regular basis. There is still a massive difference in the endurance required to play midfield compared to playing in defence or attack IMO. Weller is certainly coming along nicely,(and his endurance is definitely very good for a second year player), but id much prefer him running off half back in his second year. There actually has not been a lot of second year players who play predominately midfield regularly at AFL level in recent years outside of the two expansion clubs. Some definitely, but with the exception of very early picks most young midfield draftees take o couple of seasons before gaining the endurance to play midfield regularly at AFL level.

I have very, very high hopes for Sheridan this year. His year last season was massively underrated by most on here IMO.

No he doesn't seem explosive but rarely tackled when running on the outside. Another glider like Hilly with great endurance who should be very valuable this year especially with the reduced subbing and the vest going.

Running schmunning. I want to see him play that first Port game of 2015 every game.

Yes we really need good disposal into our forward 50 and Weller is a player who fits that category.

The kick that Weller struggled the most with last season at WAFL level was the one into the forward fifty. His kicking in the back half was an absolute ton better. Sheridan's disposal is massively underrated by most on here. Id rather him kicking into the forward fifty.
