How'd the boys go?
It was way too hot to be watching football today, let alone playing it. All the same I was keen to catch a glimpse of the new guys particularly after a summer of encouraging training reports. Unfortunately I left the game a little disappointed. Most of the performances were subdued, but the new guys were dealing with oppressive weather, new team mates and unfamiliar surroundings so I assume all these factors contributed to producing an underwhelming hit out.
I was sitting in the members stand and at qtr time the coaches brought the players over into the shade of the old stand. I could hear every word the coaches said without leaving my seat which was pretty cool. Hale spoke to the players for some time before Cam came to the group. He's my new favourite assistant coach, I loved listening to what he said. I reckon that guy is a senior coach in the making. Very level headed, he was calm and spoke clearly to the group and delivered a simple message about forward setup. And for a casual observer like me I immediately understood how they wanted to move the ball inside the f50 and how they wanted the forwards to circulate through there, providing a lead and, if not honoured, to clear out and open up space for the next forward in the circulation. Hale might be the pickup of the summer.
DeBoer was Peel's best player but he's clearly outside the best 22 for Freo now. He attacked the ball ferociously and won a heap of centre clearances.
Crozier did his usual stuff, hard chasing, lunging tackles and some lovely long kicks but he went missing too frequently. He didn't stake a claim for a crack at the first 22.
Tanner looked OK up forward, he out pointed Ames in some one on one duals and looks much better when he's not accountable for another player. He could make it, but he's right on the cusp and is backup for a pinch hitting forward or defender at best.
I was a little disappointed with Uber, though I realise that is being a bit unrealistic given it was his first game in horrible conditions. It's just that the training reports had led me to believe he was much better than the player I saw today. He looks a little "heavy" to me in a Brian Lake sort of way and could do with another pre season straight away. He played up forward with Tanner but was easily held by Ames in a couple of contests. Last year's crop of kids spoiled us. Each of them showed something from their very first game but Uber will need plenty of time to develop. He did a couple of nice things, he kicked a goal in the first qtr and walked through a tackle in the second before firing off a hard low kick into the centre of the ground which only just missed its target. He kicked a good centering ball off a step on the boundary in the third which found its target and resulted in a goal. He looks a bit lackadaisical and slow at times but he can put on a spurt of speed when required. He dropped nearly every contested mark that I saw.
Nyhuis was virtually unsighted in the first half, the only time I saw him was when he was running to the bench. He improved a little bit in the second half. He went back with the flight on no less than 3 occasions in the last qtr and effected some good spoils without infringing, which was a positive sign. He also ran through the centre of the ground in the last and delivered the ball nicely by foot. He's a handy size and there's definitely something to work with there. He will probably get better with a few more games and when he becomes more familiar with his team mates.
Deluca looks a bit fitter this year and played ok. He sharked a nice goal off the pack in the second.
Yarran and Tucker had a kick to each other before the game started. Tucker is an impressive athlete when you see him close up.

Thanks P.Reign always like your report on thunder, I expect uebergang will need a few match to get use to his surrounding , still a bit Disappointed with what reported i still see him better than Tab but need a full year like you mention. Yarran will kill it once he is fit in WAFL.
Did Weller. Show something in pre season for peel or Rd 1.

All the kids last year showed a touch of class in their early games. Few would forget Weller's 4 bounce run through the centre of the ground in just his second WAFL game. (I know the reports say it was a 5 bounce run but I'm adamant it was only 4, not that it really matters)

Thanks, love your reports.
Re Uber, it could take time, big gap from neafl where he was playing to wafl even in practice games.

Ames is a pretty handy defender too, . Crozier must be the dissapointment of the summer.
Croz I think is 185 and Mayne around 188 . if he is playing in peel thunder just let him play his role there ,right I don't think he know where is his usual position. As for uebergang I saw him training more time as a defender than forward, suddenly playing forward in new environment in hot condition for peel must be hard for the kid.

There simply are not many one position players.

No yarran for peel either. If he is training with the main group he would play either WAFL of AFL right ? Wonder if they are still working hom hard to try and slot into the main team

Hi Gav not saying he (croz) playing one position but since Mayne will be best 22 for freo , ugle , Langdon , Weller will be filling in ballas and Walters role for peel. No harm Croz trial more time in Mayne role and when needed maybe switch play with blakely for peel hence position forward/mid structure wise will still be mini freo.

Thanks heaps for the report

I agree with the training reporters talking some new players up. Not having a dig at Sherrif but his hype on Hurley was a bit over the top and Uber did kick two goals in a practice game but has done little else. I like to temper my expectations a bit.

I always try to calm people down regarding uebergang I like his potential but need game time at least half a season in WAFL that is minimum his body not ready yet. Either way I am not too fussed with blakely, crozier spending time in wafl.

Anyone going to watch Peel play tomorrow at Rushton (Bendigo stadium). Should be a few dockers suiting up for them.

I presume we wont be told who from Freo is playing for Peel this week?

Would think that they would want everyone who is available to be playing from now on.

My guess , yarran , smith, uebergang and ryhuis , croz, deboer will play for peel.

Peel in front by a couple of goals at half time (scoreboard has vanished). Will do a full report tonight but the boys look OK. Alex Pearce is as rusty as my old bed springs, but looks like he is fit enough. Will definitely need some games to find his touch.

Final score 11.13 to 9.7. Lots of junk time goals to Claremont, was win.
Take a safe trip back home , no rush for report, go watch reply freo vs cats , as usual enjoy the real start of BF season , I will enjoy reading your observation regarding the kids later with Silva and croz.

ust got home with takeaway schezuan beef from from Tai Wah, settling in to watch the game on Fox.

Since it was just a scratchie, rather than sitting here and writing a long-winded report, I will come back later and answer any specific question anyone has about the game or the players.

Will be a couple of hours, but will definitely get to them.

Fire away!

Which Fremantle players turned out for Peel?
Who kicked the goals?
If Yarran played how did he go?
Who in your opinion were Peel's best three player ?
