COLLINGWOOD vice-captain Scott Pendlebury has put further distance between himself and a possible move to Greater Western Sydney by declaring he wants to captain the Magpies in the future.

The 23-year-old has been highlighted as a potential target of the cashed up Giants, who are also reported to be interested in his teammates Dane Swan and Dale Thomas.

Pendlebury will skipper the Magpies in the NAB Cup grand final against Essendon this Friday night with regular captain Nick Maxwell out injured, and has expressed his ambitions to snare the full-time job in years to come.

"Captaining Collingwood is something I want to do in the future and to get a small preview of it for the next few weeks is going to be exciting," he said on Thursday.

Pies are making Sure that people know that Pendles want's to Stay a Pie :D

Well rusty he isn't any speedster but his footy brain is fast and that's what gives him the acres of space he always seems to have. fine decision maker and always poised and looking for a team mate in a better position as soon as he gains possession.

I am convinced now that all 3 of Swan, Thomas and Pendlebury will stay. People just don't leave Collingwood. Can anyone tell me the last person to leave because of money and not because they were either delisted or left bcos of a lack of opportunities?...

86 when all players had to take 20% cuts because the Club would Die if they did not

Isnt it funny how they likened him to Dal Santo, i think hes alot better than dal santo and also has 2 more little medals around his neck:D

Quite appropriate to have the words 'little' and 'Dal Santo' in the same sentence.

This statement of ambition is the clearest indication yet that Pendles intends to stay. Great stuff.

I was much more heartened by these captaincy comments than the interview comments earlier.

Good he's getting a taste for leading the boys out, it all makes it that much harder to turn your back on, to go to some tinpot club elsewhere, even if there are a few bucks in it for you.

Now he just needs to get himself a haircut and i'll be well pleased. If he's shy, he could perhaps take Sharrod with him for company...

Nick Davis. He is the exception, not the rule though.

Not wanting to play the Devil's Avocado here, but Collingwood's long history is peppered with stars who left (or threatened to leave) to play elsewhere because they weren't being remunerated adequately. Ron Todd, Bobby Rose, Thompson and Tuddenham. It was Collingwood policy for a while to officially pay no player any more than another.

Sure most of them are in a different time of footy, but you're commiting the same folly as the Pies past administrators to believe that players will simply agree to be paid less for the honour of wearing the B&W.

Hopefully the sway of potential premierships to come will be a deciding factor.

Smoky???? He's 5th favoruite for the brownlow at $15, if that's smoky then what are players like Sidebottom's chance? Haha!

Not sure I'd be that confident. I think Swan is the worry as he has said little and this is to not denegrate his value (because clearly he's been the best of the three for a longer period and Pendelbury has had some injury worries) but he is the oldest. I could easily see Swan leaving if GWS offered him big money, he's the same age as Ablett was, same position and obviously hasn't made as much money over his career as he could've.

Does anyone know as to whether Swan qualifies for the long-term salary cap reduction in any of the future 2, 3 or 4 years? That's the only way he could stay is by back-ending it (I think).

HANDY POINT: I've been curious for close to 6 months now but keep forgetting to ask the question. Who is that giant man you have as your avatar?

Qualifies for the vets list in 2013 under the proposed vets list changes, included as part of the free agency rules.

Any contract we offer will have his 2nd and subsequent years from that contract included under the vets list.
