Perplexing ... heels more popular than faces

I have noticed more and more that the most loved wrestler's on BigFooty and probably other forums for that matter are predominantly heels or in a heel phase of their career.

Angle as a heel, Eddie Guerrero during his lie, cheat and steal phase, The Game as the consumate bad guy, The Rock's heel turn, NWO ... Edge's stocks have risen considerably as a heel, Carlito was more talked about as a heel, Mr Kennedy, Booker ... the list goes on.

Some of these guys have also been considered lame during their face phases.

Now I thought faces were faces because the time was right for them to get the biggest pop from the crowds. With that in mind, we assume they are very popular with the masses .... but not on BF.

Do I assume by this that 'bad' is good and vice versa. Is it all about their moves? Are the heels more well written? And why do forums feel differently to the masses? Do forumites consider themselves more passionate and educated about what makes a good wrestler, like many uni students I know, it is cool to have opposing ideas to the mainstream and debate them endlessly. Do forumites consider the majority of wrestling fans sheep who allow the publicity machines to tell them who to like and who is the best?

It really is an interesting aberration I think.

Thoughts?

i just think the wwe has a lack of good face wrestlers, you have john cena and batista...woo:rolleyes:. undertaker is probably the best they have but he hardly wrestles that much anymore

i usually like the better entertainer, and guys like kennedy are great entertainers, i guess thats my reason

I think it's a by product of appealing to the masses. Faces are made into very obvious, lame, predictable cartoon characters. Alot of the charm of a wrestler like Carlitto is lost in turning face. His character was great because of how well he pulled off the cockiness, being so selfish. Now he has to do things like rescue the girl (Trish, Torrie Wilson etc) and say nice stuff about crowd, just impossible to keep that cocky edge.

Pretty much spot on. The crowd enjoys the heels character, and then they get popular, but the WWE doesn't stick with what made them popular, instead just turning them into the boring unoriginal characters. The only good faces these days are the respected veterans like HBK, HHH, Undertaker etc.

Heels always used to get the better storylines which would make me like them more, sometimes there was a period the face would be made to look weak at the start of the fued and then they would make the heel job out.

I've always liked the way heels would work the crowd, though I haven't been much for storylines, but heels have always been my first preference.

Some people just have a better ability to play bad guys, some (cena) have a better ability at playing good guys. And good guys are plain and simple apart from the rock, whom only apeal to kids, plus most people feel like more of a rebel baracking for the heels.

There's the reason right there. The heel Christian in the WWE is my favourite character of all time.

Will JBL become a face when he comes back to wrestling in 2007???
i wish he would go back just being bradshaw, and hopefully he will be back soon, his back is screwed up though, i dont think he is comming back, he said he is retiring from the ring perminatly a while ago, but hes done 1-2 wwe matches since then, we can all dream though

When I used to watch wrestling back in the dark old days, I always preferred the bad guys to the good guys. They were entertainers and the way they handled the crowd. Ah, those were the days. In fact, it hasn't been the same for a while, I refuse to watch the crap they dish out nowadays.

IMO - Austin McMahon rivalry, simply the best...

There are some wrestlers who are so respected that it is hard for them to become heels ie Kurt angle and Chris Benoit

Happened to Stone Cold as well, no matter what they did, crowd still popped for him.

The Rock was better as a heel imo... but once you get really popular with the crowd, you have to turn face. Can't have the fans booing the face.

It was the same even back in the 80s. I couldn't stand Hulk Hogan but loved guys such as the Macho Man, Mr Wonderful and Roddy Piper in their heel phases and wanted them so badly to beat Hogan and win the title.

How long has it been since Carlito has spit apple in someone's face? Let alone had an apple.. I personally reckon Carlito was a way better heel for the fact he thought he was the best and cared about number 1.. now he has to act all soft.. fans will like him if he does the aggro apple thing.. but this is WWE and they are ********ed.
