I am not in agreeance with what is happening in Iraq , from contracts awarded, to torture and daily death. I feel sorry for the soldiers but if they lay down their guns then politicians would have to fight the fight themselves.

I just hope those here who are in agreeance look at the names of the dead, and remember a parent has lost a child because you supported a lie. AND NO THE END DOESNT JUSTIFY THE MEANS

could you name the iraqis murdered by the USA?

and Haliburton thanks the soldiers of the USA for ensuring its profits rise.

IMO the freaks at the top should argue their difference instead of letting soldiers and civilians die.

the criminal scum of bush, rumsfeld, blair, sharon, wolfowitz, howard etc should square up against the criminal scum of OBL, saddam, kaddaffi, etc and let them fight it out and leave the rest of he world alone, but there is no profit in that, and guys like bush, rummie, howard, OBL, saddam etc are cowards and wouldn't get their hands dirty when their are poor people and the gullible to do it for them.

I can understand your fury at MM but how does it detract from the information supplied?

I got the names from MMs site nothing more..the rest was all me , he did set a train of thought up but apart from the roll call nothing was his

yeah i know sorry got carried away,

but i'm a hard bastard and giving me names or picutres really doesn't personalise it for me,

It would have to be a member of my immediate family for me to feel anything really apart from maybe a bit of sorrow for those involved thats about all I can muster - blame TV I suppose (or Canada)

It ********s me when people say stuff like this. Its not the soldiers role to decide when and when not to go to war. Their job is to go into action as directed by their superiors and political masters. Its the politicians who should be hanged for this debacle, not the common soldier who is simply following orders. The only time they can and should 'lay down their arms' and disobey an order is when it is blatantly and obviously an illegal one (i.e. the sexual abuse of prisoners).

If you want to blame someone for Iraq, blame Bush and his cronies and the American public who re-elected him, not the soldiers.

Perhaps, but the US like what is increasingly happening in Australia have a very narrow view in the media. If you have read papers in France or the UK you get a wide spectrum of views, you don't have to agree with them, but it is essential in my view. MM is the only one who speaks out in the US, and as voltaire said it is part of democracy.

I would also like to add that the soliders did join the armed forces - I'm not sure if they didnt' read the job specs - but going to War is generally a risk of the job,

they are there to do a job nothing else

Many would have joined the defence forces for.

1. to defend the nation
2. pay for a degree
3. seen as national duty
4. get a trade and get out of the poverty trap
5. they are nutters
6. steady paying job and a career

or a mix of these.

I think part of the reason why morale is so low is that they didn't think they were joining the army to fight so haliburton shareholders like Bush and chainey can get really rich.

When I asked why Troy Broadbridge was been singled out over the 100,000 who lost their lives in the terrible event on Sunday. I was told it was because if ....blah, blah, blah.... JUSTIFY THE MEANS

This post sux. Sure it's a thousand dead, but given the scale of the operation and the size of America, then the casualty figures are actually quite light.

How about personalizing it for the Iraqis. They seem to be dying at a rate of 100 for every GI Joe? Every single one of those deaths counts just as much, if not more, as every American's death. Why aren't you pointing out how with every iraqi death, another mother grieves.

The interest in Broadbridge is genuine, because we feel we know him through his football. But his death also connects us to the all the others who've died through elevating the tsunami above being just another news story. Just listing the names of soldiers achieves nothing. I've never heard of any of them and I bet you haven't either. You haven't exposed any part of their lives to which we feel we have been privileged to share in, unlike Broadbridge and his footy.

Haven't read all posts on this topic since the catastrophe, but I actually thought Broadbridge showed something last season. He will be missed, if indeed he is no longer with us.

He was a bit unco., but was becoming a player.

Still, if your last action is to save the life of your newly married bride, I'd learn to live with that as an epitath.

Won't help her though.

Pity you didn't write this in February 2003, when your sentence exactly fits life under Saddam and the corrupted Oil for food program.

PerthCrow said:

Iraqi politicians are trying to fight themselves - through the ballot box. Unfortunately there are elements in Iraq who are so afraid of democracy that they send suicide bombers to Iraqi police, election workers and civilians.

Shall I now lay at your feet the blame for every death Saddam would have been responsible for if he were still in power?

I?

Saddam made the mistake of not being more like this guy.

Why do the US tolerate this and not others?

OIL maybe?

I think people missed the point

Hawkforce I assume you are quite happy those soldiers died for ''liberty'' and are willing to face the parents on christmas day and say '' gee too bad your child isnt here to open his present''

And what did he do that 20 other dictators and corrupt politicians didnt do in 20 other countries?

Saddam was a swerve to take the Americans minds of the failed hunt for Osama , GWB panicked and realised he needed the heat taken off''I know lets go to war''

Iraqi politicians are trying to fight themselves - through the ballot box. Unfortunately there are elements in Iraq who are so afraid of democracy that they send suicide bombers to Iraqi police, election workers and civilians.

If you read the history of the area before and after Saddam came to power ,you would know he WAS SUPPORTED by the Americans, because he was the one cohesive force that united and bullied all those separate groups into cooperation. hether through fear or not. Democracy cant work in a country ruled by the Theocracy.

Fine. Which end did you support and what means did you think it would take?

What was wrong with the status quo? Iraq was peaceful ,prosperous and moving ahead. Now its a rabble ..and GWBs end justifies that?

It is a long and sad list, and though for a war of this duration and size it is historically a relatively small list, it is tragic none the less. I say this as one who knows people out there now.

And of course the list of Iraqi civilians killed accidently by the US or intentionally by the Iraqi insurgents is even longer, of that we can be sure.

Longer still would be the list of those killed by the Iraqi tyrant, a list of hundreds of thousands.

One can agree or disagree with the war, but let us be clear here, what was occuring before the war under Saddam was not peace.

Tyranny can never be peace.

So if Iraq does become a democracy, and long term it stablises into a peaceful, free nation, it can be said that those who died, died for something larger than the individual. Unlike those who died under Saddam, and simply for Saddam.

I started to respond to rest of your tired, cyclical, rhetorical questions but really what is the point responding to someone who writes this about Iraq in February 2003:

It absolutely beggars belief that someone could actually be so callous.

How was it callous? Before The USus invaded Iraq..sorry liberated it..the market place in Baghdad was one of the more affluent..now its effluent

Peaceful? In context it was...look at it now and tell me in all honestly it is peaceful.

As to moving ahead? Where and how is that callous. Dont be fooled by your masters words when you read the next edition of ''Stars and Stripes'' and look back. I am no apologist for Saddam but I recognise an injustice when i see it.

I do agree what America is TRYING to do MAY have some benefit but I think it will be worse than it was 2 years ago.And I think it will have ramifications for the next 20 years

PerthCrow,

Iraq in February 2003 was a Police State.

A dictatorship unparalelled in its brutality since Pol Pot.

It was NOT peaceful; it was NOT prosperous; and, like every single tyranny of its kind throughout history, was most certainly NOT moving ahead.

It's the inherent nature of reactionary dictatorship to never allow any change which might threaten the existing power structures.

PerthCrow, you might find it of amusment to play games of equivalence but it is clearly a measure of your self-delusion that you can write of yourself:

I am no apologist for Saddam

Havnig just described his regime in terms not even the brutal murderer would use to describe Iraq in the last years of the existence of the Baath.

I suggest you read Kanan Makiya's "Republic of Fear".

As long as were personalising war, someone should write down all the names of the people which Saddam Hussein killed when he gased the Kurds. Whether people like it or not Saddam Hussein was probably killing more people then the US Soldiers have been killing, the difference is now that US is there you actually hear about the deaths.

Im sure if the insurgency didnt exist most people would be sitting here today praising the US for the great job it did, instead people blame the US for the people which the insurgency kill... From this board you would think that the US soldiers were the ones doing all the killing...

As far as Haliburton go, who really gives a ********. If you honestly believe that the sole purpose for war was to raise the stock prices of two people then you are a dumbass. In the end all the oil refineries were blown up and if Iraqi wanted to begin to pump oil as quickly as possible they were gonna need a company like Halliburton to do it...

I know that you don't hear about all the deaths caused by the yanks and they have killed more people than saddam, the US soldiers are doing a lot of the killing.
Obviously sucked in by the Haliburton/bush propaganda machine, your a dumbass for believing that tripe, and to actually say they are doing good things

DD has his agenda....like me he believes the REASON for war was wrong

If you truly believe that what America is doing in Iraq is good then your an idiot. They have created a breeding ground for hatred and further incitement towards the west. WHY? To hide the fact that GWB couldnt find a raghead in a cave.

If you are so highly motivated to rid the world of dictators or police states please list Nth Korea as your next port of call...or do you think its time for peace

If it does nothing else at least this complex thread gives us a better understanding of the misery generated by the deaths in Iraq. The death tolls of this man-made disaster and the natural disaster are currently similar and we are getting plenty of TV images of the misery in the Asian horror. Somehow we seem to more readily accept the deaths caused by man's inhumanity to man.
