Now I'm sure I'll be in the minority, but I think it might be an interesting discussion. When looking at the league ladder, the city of Perth looks like it is not represented in the AFL. Sure maybe West Coast looks Western Australian, but so does the Western Bulldogs.

I remember a news article in the West Australian several years ago about a possible name change to the "Perth Eagles". I know what most will be thinking, is that it doesn't sound right, but only because we are not use to it. I remember when the West Coast Eagles was the name given to our club in late 1986, and to be honest it did sound a bit of a mouth full, but now everyone is use to it.

Plus, when we play Fremantle, the scoreboard will look like a real derby! Perth V Fremantle!

From what I gather, one of the main reasons why we werent called Perth the first place was because of the Perth Football Club (Demons) that already existed in the WAFL, that might seem strange now, but back then the WAFL ruled WA Football obviously.

For some reason i don't like the sound of the Perth Eagles - too me it's just not appealing. I would think West Coast sums up Western Australia.

If anything it should be the Subiaco Eagles, seen as how the club is based in Subi and plays it's home games there. Perth isn't Subi. Who cares if the city of Perth isn't represented by name? Nobody really cares about Perth city do they?

I know what you mean, but Fremantle are part of Western Australia too. Fremantle are more on the west coast than West Coast is (Considering our HQ's are at Subiaco Oval).

Plus inland WA country towns cant consider themselves on the west coast :)

I think most here would care about the city, my guess is that most Eagles supporters are proud of their city?

Sense at last.

'West Coast' is generic.

Perth, gives the team a geographical link. Recognisable world wide.

West Coast Eagles sounds about as Australian as apple pie and Stars and Stripes.

I was under the impression the name came about to maximise a geographical location.

West Coast = Perth, Fremantle, Bunbury, Geraldton, Broome, Mandurah, Rockingham etc

Perth = Perth but excluding all those other cities/towns

Subiaco = subiaco but excluding Claremont, Fremantles, East Perth, West Perth, Swan etc.

I thought it was all about trying to be a state team rather than just a city or suburb team. There's 600k people who live outside Perth but in WA.

The name did capture Western Australia at the time. It brought together groups of football followers who for generations had been rivals. It did suite the times of the eighties. It was a state team wich was reflected by the team song. But it is not seen as a state team anymore.

I admit a name change would be near impossible to affect.
But I believe the reciprocal exposure that the name Perth and Eagles could do for each other would pay divedends forever and the longer it remains West Coast the harder it will be to convince the membership.

I have the same feelings about Western Force.

Why do people insist on ********ing with things at the club? If it aint broke dont fix it. We are the West Coast Eagles, and I think you'll find 90% of supporters wouldnt want to change that. The whole thing reeks of Ochre jumpers.

Dennis Cometti used to flog this dead horse a few years back. I cant believe it has even reared it's head.

I think youll find most people who say there is a lack of identity are Freo supporters who seem to claw desperately for any kind of leverage they can to give us ********.

The West Coast Eagles represent all Western Australians apart from that little patch of purple wearing bog-lappers from the port city who insist on borrowing our House of Pain and in doing so allow interstate teams cheap wins.

The sooner Jim McGinty redirects some of his electorate funds to the redevelopment of Fremantle Oval to allow the Shockers to lose in their own backyard the better.

Or better still, relocate the Dockers to that 'other' port city, Sydney.

The Botany Bay Botters!

There's already a Perth FC...Unless that club entered the AFL and became the Eagles, it cant really happen can it?
What about the Swans and the soccer club Sydney FC?

That would be AWESOME!

Then "Perth" Eagles (formerly the Demons, established 1899) could lay claim to the 1907, 1955, 1966-67-68, 1976 and 1977 premierships!

We could bitch and moan about Essendon not allowing us to wear black and red in the Heritage Round, and get on BigFooty and throw tantrums every time someone said the Eagles were only formed in 1986!

West Coast/Perth Eagles/Demons/Redlegs/City Reds - 9 AFL/WAFL (VFL equivalent) premierships - Established 1899

We exist to pinch another club's premierships

Im so still ********ed off that the Western Bulldogs are called 'Western' I mean ffs, who gives a rats ass about Western Victoria, just call them Footscray like they used to be. When people from other places come to see our game for the first time, they would get confused wouldn't they about where they are from. Same with North and Kangaroos.

ROTFLMAO!!! Bring it all on.... :D

The AFL needs to relocate the 'little patch of purple wearing bog-lappers from the port city' to Botany Bay ASAP. :D

You have no idea how pleased I am about that.

And so are the West Coast Eagles FC.

They just hoped that those residents in Meekatharra ( Ar$e End of the Earth) like you, would ignore the fact that Western Australia is the West Coast of Australia...And wait until a Sooks club got the go ahead so you could join that. :D

Thanks for obliging my club. :D

If you look around the rest of the league you have melbourne teams based on their locales (Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, St Kilda etc) and the expansion clubs based on their city. Logically we should be the perth eagles, but seriously, what makes anyone think that football is at all about logic?

Club names, jumpers, team songs, etc etc etc are like sponges- they soak up the heritage and the achievements of your club the longer they are there- that's an excellent reason not to change things.

West Coast are West Coast because we've won two flags and built our heritage and our side under that name. That makes our old jumpers good, and it makes West Coast a kickass team and it makes our song a bit less cringeworthy than it would otherwise be.

Similar, Fremantle don't have a god awful jumper, friday night chunder assortment of colours and a laughable themesong just because those thing are all objectively like that, its the heritage (namely 15 years and counting of miserable failure) which goes with those things which makes them sucky.

As a proud member of the Perth Football Club, I resent the above idea.

Also, as others have said, West Coast means the team represents more than just the state's capital city.

It's all a bit meh these days when there's not one club in the league that plays in the area they're named after (well at least not within the defined postal boundaries anyway), except perhaps Geelong.

The MCG's in Jolimont IIRC, the Dome's in the suburb of Docklands, the Gabba's in Woolongabba, the SCG's in Moore Park and Stadium Australia's in Homebush. Football Park's in West Lakes, Subiaco Oval's in (tadah!!) Subiaco. I'll grant that Kardinia Park appears to be actually in Geelong, although it might be South Geelong.

Geographical names are all very well and nice, but in the end, who cares? We've done OK with West Coast now for nineteen seasons, why change now?

If anything nasty happened to West Coast, I'd probably look at getting on the Moore Park Swans. Not a big fan of the Suburb of Docklands Saints though, how are you supposed to fit that on a scoreboard?
