Well someone has to start this thread. Where does he stand in the pecking order at present?

Only played 18 games so IMO needs a longer first class career before serious consideration but his third first class ton has seen his average pushed up to 50 and averaging 74 this season (although slightly misleading due to the four not outs in ten innings, still hit well over 400 runs). He's shown good composure in often coming in after our top order has batted terribly and his keeping is pretty good standard also, having the most dismissals of any keeper in the shield. Chance of higher honours in the future?

Keeper seems to be the area we actually do have good depth at present

if only there was room for more than one keeper in a team... haddin, wade, paine, nevill, hartley would be a fairly formidable team of keepers... triffit also looks pretty good.

nevill is currently fourth in the pecking order. there is a lot of quality around in this department.

See, everyone has Paine as the heir apparent, but surely Wade and this guy have some claim to the throne? Have never really seen Nevill keep (I assume he's OK), but surely averaging 50 odd over a couple of seasons puts him in the frame.

Again, going back to Paine, I acknowledge he's a handy player and did a perfectly fine job when Haddin got injured. But is he hands down the best option to take over when Haddin retires?

it's debateable. He's been appointed for a while but he's barely played a game the last year and his record with the bat is hardly outstanding (even if Hobarts a tough wicket).

I'm meh on Paine tbh, he seemed like the big new thing but has he done anything lately? Injuries or not, he shouldn't be considered 2nd or even 3rd in line anymore.

Nevill's form probably makes it worse for Wade than Paine. If he keeps making runs the NSW factor will probably come in to play and let him pass Wade. Although looking at how easy the Tassie openers are going Nevill's last hundred doesn't look quite as good.

With Paine, people like to jump on the whole he shouldn't be next in line thing. Short memories seem to forget at the time he played for Australia it was really only a 2 horse race with Paine and Hartley. Since then he has barely played because of injury(the first of which should of never happened) and CA's almighty wisdom thinking it was better to have him carrying drinks for Australia all summer instead of actually playing matches for Tassie. Nevill has done all his work in that time Paine has basically not played, Wade has stepped up a level during that time as well and even Paines Tasmanian replacement is improving rapidly. Given that it seems Haddin has managed to buy some more time I think Paine at least deserves to show what he can do against the same attacks Wade and Nevill have been scoring against when he returns. If Haddin was to go out tomorrow would be happy for Wade or Nevill or Hartley to take his spot however.

hartley and wade are the best keepers in the land IMO.

wade is the best of the batsmen out of paine, hartley and wade.

Paine is pretty gutsy in tough conditions.

I would say through age, and talent, paine and wade should be neck and neck.

the NSW factor again though:confused:

someone better tell Kerry O'Keefe.

Called Wade the worst Gloveman in the country on ABC radio last weekend. Wades advantage is the batting, His keeping is not ahead of any of Hartly, Neville or Paine.

No way Wade can be talked about as the best keeper. He has improved a lot yes but still is no where near Paine, who himself is below Hartley...I have not really seen much of Nevill, oh and please Vic fans not another post with the amount of catches he has taken, it is a meaningless stat unless it's with dropped catches as well. Have heard early on at Victoria it was even considered telling him to drop the keeping and concentrate completely on batting, although that may have been when they had Crosthwaite as the keeper.

the critique of keeping goes back about 2 years.

since then he's been flawless.

he duffed a few catches and byes in the shield final a few years ago and he's been judged on that. he's significantly overtaken crossthwaite, such that he left looking else for his fortunes.

I can't think of a dropped catch in the past few years, and certainly not the butterfingered spud haddin is.

Dropped two in the last day of the shield game in Hobart which didnt cost you but he was not taking the ball cleanly that last day. He also dropped one in the one day game keeping up to Maxwell which may have cost you. His keeping improved but he has actually had a bad month behind the stumps and he has not yet caught the others with his glove ability. The reason for the surge in interest is his golden form with the bat. If that's your criteria than so be it, but be honest about it.

No Chance...he hasn't been on Foxtel yet

Seriously though he is probably a few off the encumbant.

Hadden like Punter will more than likely tour England next year...hard to believe I know but they both want another crack at the POMS, so thats where my money is FWIW

I watched a fair few days of cricket and when I can't watch, I get the ball by ball updates, can you link where he dropped them please? because I haven't seen him drop anything or read about him dropping anything.. Would like to update my knowledge if he has been dropping catches because I dont seem to ever be watching when he does, and I must miss the ball by ball updates as well (you know work, and kids and whatnot means I do miss a bit)

or can anyone else verify that wade has been spudding catches?

I dont see how the likes of paine and wade cant both play in the same team. As there both very good batsmen so one can play behind the stumps and the other in the field. As the way i see it wade and paine are better then hughes and ponting(past it).

I believe gone are the days of the "must have exceptional keeping ability" to be the keeper in the side. Keeping ability is overrated. They make it out to be like they are incredibly talented, but I bet you majority of the team could keep half decent.

IMO, pick the best batsman, with still at least good to average keeping skills. If someone averaged higher with the bat, than someone who kept better, I would take the player with the higher batting average.

from the commentry of that day.

Over 39.2: McKay to Doolan, FOUR, DROPPED, outside off, keeps low, gets the nick and it's through Wade standing up and runs to the rope

Over 17.3: McKay to Cowan, no run, Wade back up once again and can't take it cleanly... however a few of us saw it on the stream and teh reaction was clear and if you read EddieSmith... Victoria's most bias poster on the matter and Wade's biggest supporter

He does drop a few for someone in the national team, particurly up to the stumps like he did with McKay... tough but he chose to put himself there.

I agree he's the better batsman now but his consistency up to the the stumps is a concern.

But I have no idea why he was even keeping up

I cant find any independent analysis of the one day one, I should have it on tape when I get home in the middle of next week. I will re-watch and try and locate the ball or beg your forgiveness. But I guarantee behind the stumps in both games I would have said quite comfortably, he was poor and fumbling.

Bump.
Getting back to Paine vs Wade, Paine is definetely the better keeper and Wade in my opinion is the better batsman. This would leave it fairly even withhout anything else but Paine would rightly deserve fiirst gig. But Paine's injury hasw been a bigger factor than most here are realising. He has had little to no continued run of cricket without being injured for roughly 18 months.
