I don't know whether you're being facetious or not, but you can count the number of good games Vardy has played for the Dees on one hand. Apart from that he's either drifted in and out of games or not played at all due to injury - sound familiar?

When he was on for us, he was on though.

Not sure whether we won or lost in that trade. He was always a player who could turn it on for us at the drop of a hat. Given his forward line role, he wasn't necessarily the type we should have expected consistency from anyway.

He didn't want to stay.

Its in the past and not even relevnat to our current situation

I hope Peter plays well as he will always be an AFC Premiership player first and foremost.

I think Im also taking into consideration the deal I think we got ripped in the deal and should have got more for Vardy, I think we didnt because he had a shocking 2001.

Will never forget his Semi Final and Grand Final performances in 1998;) :D

Or that goal in 97 against the Cats. Crucial goal. Sad that it came at the cost of his services for the prelim and GF.

Yeah he played great footy back then he can still turn in on now though, Blight really knew how to get the best out of Vardy but Ayres couldnt and subsequently was traded:(

Vardy was one of those players that are either blowing hot or cold. When he is blowing hot he is a FANTASTIC player. When he is cold he plays a deadset stinker.

Fact is that we didn't want to lose Vardy but Vardy WANTED to leave. There was nothing we could do to keep him. We got duded in a trade for a reason that a lot of people are not aware of.

Vardy was due to go to Sydney for Ryan Fitzgerald and a draft pick but swans didn't want to do the trade until they got their main man Barry Hall. Unfortunately for us Sydney got Hall but also got Daffy as part of that deal. Daffy was on huge money at the time and as a result Sydney could no longer afford to get Vardy because they couldn't fit him under the salary cap.

This whole thing practically happened in the final minutes of trading period and we were forced to trade Vardy for peanuts. Melbourne came in and gave us 3rd round draft pick. We then traded that pick to Freo for Schell. Freo used it on Medhurst.

We came off looking second best but a trade proposed with Sydney at the time was good for both parties.

Haha cripes.

Very accurate summary of the events that led to us getting next door to nothing for Vardy, young Stiffmeister.

People do have short memories in general, and things always appear better than they really were when we reminisce.

Read dyertribe's post above - that was the real Peter Vardy.

Yeah I do... hence my reply...

The scary thing is the staff involved in that trading/draft period are all still employed by the club.

Exactly. Vardy was stale at AFC & in need of a new club to revitalise his career. Good luck to him with the Dees. The only thing you could question was what we got for him & what we did with the draft pick.

Yeah well thats another story :(

One of those "5 minutes to 12" trade that happens every year. You either get a steal or you get dudded.

Hopefully we can pinch a steal or 2 this year :)

Wasn't exactly the club's finest hour of trading...:(

Another fine piece of recruiting from those boys down at AFC.
No we gave Medhurst for Schell.

Another story that most people are not aware off. Medhurst went into the draft saying that he will not loeave WA if drafted by another club. So basically it was either going to be Eagles or Freo.

However, that pick could have been used on a couple of other players like Damon White (picked by power at #62) and Mark Jamar

Sure is.

As much as I would like to have goten more for Vardy the circumstances didn't allow us. I don't think there was much more we could do other than to take a punt and in hindisght it wasn't a very good move.

spot on...but as u have previously stated...it was a deal made 5 mins be4 deadline (effectively anyway)...we were basically bent over the trading table :p

might help if some of the football operations people stay in Melbourne for the whole trading period instead of coming home after 24 hours.

Problem is we seem to say it in regard to every bloody tradeweek/draft period post-Robert Shaw.

true...very true...

thing is tho, NOT all of it has been the doing of the AFC...there have been some outside influences which at times have prevented us getting deals done...

i think we all agree tho...AFC MUST get it right this year...
