I remember when it was brought in it was supposed to be 'goal line technology' like soccer, to fix glaring goal umpire mistakes. Then I remember one of the first times I saw it used was an Ablett goal from 40metres out being declared touched off the boot by some crappy camera angle. How the hell is that goal line technology? Score review as it is is a complete farce and needs to be completely reworked.

They should remove replay cameras rather than add more.

The argument for more cameras and replays to assist better decision making is like the argument that more guns are needed to protect people from shooters.

It doesn't improve the situation, it just makes the less obvious, obvious.

I don't know if the St Kilda GF side of 2009 would agree with you there.

Like cricket, the review system was brought in to eradicate the "howlers". But you end up getting a lot of 50-50 decisions getting reviewed. I can live with that if it means the howlers (see Hawkins poster in 09 GF) are corrected.

and i take that point (see what i did there) but a whole bunch of free kicks were and were not payed incorrectly in that game along with every other AFL game.

the correct attitiude is to cop it and move on rather than lament that this one event changed everything in a way that you can’t prove.

as far as St.Kilda goes, their kicking for goal that day (and others more recently) cost them a lot score then the 5 points and momentum Geelong gained

i prefer the days when people acted as grown ups and simply accepted the umpires decision, right or wrong
Yeah not sure that ever happened actually.

Petitioning the AFL to get rid of the score review system all together, there's no need for it especially in light of the ridiculous decisions being made this season. The game flows better, teams maintain their momentum, crowds stay involved and we should just back the umpires in to call it right.
Petition the afl to improve the quality*

i don't understand why they bring it in only to not even bother coming up with the decision if the umpire is ready to bounce the ball. i'm thinking of the wb/carl game on friday. but in general (because there will be other instances) this tells you that correct decisions are not their main concern. as we can see, their main concern is paying lip service to getting the correct decision.

That's not true thats just BTs ignorance. They tell the ump to wait if they need to.

It just takes so damn long. If it was faster I wouldn't mind it so much, but when you're sitting and waiting for basically a full minute or more it gets a bit dumb.

When you compare it to other review systems around the world (cricket, NRL, VAR in soccer, NFL replays about a catch) it seems pretty quick and, so far, reasonably controversy-free. Just don't try to expand it (ie, keep it at score review only).

Interestingly, the least controversial review system in the world is tennis, which doesn't even show a replay - it puts up a computer graphic and says 'That's it - that's the best we've got'.

Should get rid of the quarter time and half time breaks as well. They're boring and kill the momentum of the game.

Seriously... What does it say about you as a person if having to wait 30 seconds for something causes you distress?

It was a point.

How do i know that absolutely for sure ?...because the goal umpire said it was a point.

At the other end of the ground, i was pissed the field umpire didnt allow Heeney's seemingly great one on one grab against Selwood in the goal square...would have been a goal.

Its a beautiful part of our game...one bloke beating another one on one. Especially seeing it between 2 of the best. Maybe if we replay that contest 10 times for 10 different people we'd get 10 differing opinions running at 50/50.

But how do i know it wasnt a mark ?....because the umpire said it wasnt a mark.

it's a good thing in theory. The problem is the technology they use isn't good enough, so they need to review the same footage a dozen times and end up with an inconclusive result

Either install high speed cameras that can capture any touches on the ball clearly, or change the rule so that if kick grazes a finger nail on the way though it's still counted as a goal (kind of like how tons of contested marks are probably touched by another player but we pay them anyway).

I say a team can challenge 1 review per game, however if they are correct and get it overturned then they keep the review and can challenge again. If they get it wrong then they can't challenge again in the game.
the problem with the challenge system is how long do the coaches have to challenge? If they only have until the fullback kicks it back in then it's very small amount of time, and the fullback will rush to kick it back in on close calls to remove the coaches ability to challenge. and if they can challenge it after that then that would mean having to stop play while it's in action which i don't think is a feasible option...

Yep they have until the kicker kicks in or plays on. They have a button in the coaches box which links to the umpires so when pushed umpire stops play. That's what will happen - if goal ump calls behind the kicker will try and kick in ASAP, however the onus is on the coach to get it right then on only clear stuff ups.

Award the goal like they did here

Until they correctly credited Hayward for the goal

I was surpised that it went the Swans way it is technically right based on a frame of footage but so very close that not sure if it was conclusive to change the onfield decision.

Can only assume the reviewing umpire has clearer or better frame rate than what we see televised and other angles in a split screen that place the boot on the ball that doesn't skip frame but rather rolls the footage.

If that is the case then the public need to see what is actually being viewed to determine the call and if not the money needs to be spent to upgrade the technology

Only for blantantly wrong decisions.
Don’t take 2 minute to see if someone’s fingers went back 1mm touched off the boot. That is still concomclusinve.
I like that each team has two challenges. It the first one is right they are another two. Max of one per quarter.
Until a team appeals a clear goal late to try and stem the momentum
