Pettifer or Bowden? Which one of these two have more a chance of remaining at Tigerland next year? Who would you rather keep on the list? Would you delist them both? Pettifers 26 and Joels 30.

Who else is on the block?

Polak? 24 (Rance, McGuane, Thursty, Rance > Polak)
Meyer? 22
Tivendale? 29
maybe even Coughlan? 26

I'd take Pettifer, firstly through that he is younger and secondly I see potential for him to change, I can see Pettifer becoming a player who will chase and tackle down players.

Bowden is just a lazy sod, who wouldn't know what 'chase and tackle' was even if a guy fell into his arms, not only that he doesn't look suited to HFF, so it looks like he would only be able to go back, leading to his hold it up-slow it down and kick sideways-waxing style of gameplan, and the way we are going right now, and the way other teams set up off the backline you can't afford to slow it down.

Others for mine on the chopping block, would be Hyde(For age), Tivendale(Don't need him) and Meyer(Would like to keep him, but just feel he is injured too much), Casserly(Hasn't played since drafted, and same reason as Meyer, but keep him in front of Meyer, in that front).

BTW to the OP, Cogs is still contracted and the club wouldn't have forked out $20,000 for him not to play again.

 You must have bought those rose-colored glasses Essendon was selling to its members over summer!

Agree with the rest of your post tho.

20K is a punt taken to improve the chances of him playing again, and well worth the bet for the potential gain. As Cogs showed in the little time he played at Coburg, he still does have that 'something' extra. Still think he's unlikely to return, but a 1 in 3 chance beats a 1 in 4 chance.

As for the rest. ( not sure who is out of contract this year )
Pettifer...keep or trade. Not sure when his contract is up, but I wouldn't be giving him more than 1 year.

Bowden..gone. Can still play well, and deserves to be in the 22, but at his age, he needs to be clearly ahead of the kid he's denying experience to, and he's not. Also, McMahon has taken his 'playmaker' role down back and I don't think it's worth it to trin him to play a new position.

Tiv. Gone. I actually rate him higher than most, but the kids are passing him by.

Hyde. Gone. ( see Tiv ).

Johnson. Give him another year..This year has been his best for a while, but I doubt he's got more than 1 or 2 more in him.

Meyer/Casserly...Have to show a lot more before their contracts expire, not least the ability to stay on the field and challenge for a spot for Richmond. Doubt they'll make it.

Graham. Still young, but should have shown more by now. Delist and promote Cartledge ( if no ruckman is traded for ).

Polak...The guy obviously has talent, but needs to make a spot his and develop a mean/selfish streak. Keep him, but play him at Coburg ( or even Coburg ressies ), put him at FF ( or CHF, or CHB, or whatever ) and leave him there until he *owns* the spot and dominates/intimidates from it. Not sure he can do it, but it's worth 2 more years to find out.

Why would you get rid of either? Bowden has another good 3-5 years in him. Will be great with him up forward. His experience will be just what we need and as long as he adapts to going in hard everytime without thinking twice then he will be great value. Pettifer has 7-8 years left. Like Bowden, he has to adapt to working harder and showing more courage. They know they'll both get dropped if they don't so they should slowly bring this into their natural games hopefully. If this happens then we have 2 quality forwards with great competition for Morton and Connors as similar type forwards trying to break into the side

Maybe I should have said I can see him as more of a player who could do that, I see Bowden with zero improvement left in him whatsoever, Pettifer possibly, just because he has a bit of mongrel in him.

Whoooooaaahhh, I really dunno about that...the jury is out still out regarding Petiffers "mongrel".

Personally I think he couldve accompanied Cogs to Germany for some gorrilla blood to be injected into his veins - then I'd sit a little more comfortably with your optimism. :thumbsu:

Go Tigers

PS I'll be keeping a closer eye on him Sunday

at the point we are at right now?.....Bowden by the length of the flemington straight....;)

lol Theres more chance of me winning 1st Div Tattslotto this Saturday Night then of Pettifer being on the list next season :) Bowden easy! All pettifer wants is when he gets the ball that he is on tv as long as possible he only cares for himself and not the side.

Remember the reason he first went out of the team, suspended for a moment of stupidity for smashing some bloke, channel that into chasing and tackling and you never know.

hit the nail on the head with that one big time. Channel what man? The guy cant run, so chasing is always the constant...the problem isnt the chasing, the problem is when he chases, the ball carrier feels more at ease than if he wasnt being chased, so the only thing that his chasing does is make it look all good for the nuff nuffs to suggest...oh look he is "trying".

Ontop of having not yet seen him win a one on one marking contest, has anyone seen him actually chase down a player he has pursued? The only time he would be able to is if the ball carrier inadverdantly turned into him, and even then, breaking the tackle is a odds on fav. ;)

If things go the way they are, we should finish around the 8-12 mark (with WC, Ess, Freo and Melb taking bottom 4 spots) so to jump into the next bracket we need a strong blend of youth and experience.
White, Cotchin, Edwards, Riewoldt, McGuane, Polo, Morton, Thursfield, Moore and King may not have 40 games under their belt by then so keep them both!
