What seems to be the hype over this guy in the back-line, and what can justify his selection as a bench rookie over say, Maguire from Brisbane?
 
So far the lack of quality forward and defender cashcows or people aren't researching hard enough...

To be honest, if he plays round one, he is good enough for me. He won't start on the field, but he sounds like a good bench player. Picked in the first round of last year's 2008 draft.

Bio: A tall defender with a strong attack on the ball, Phil Davis is strong overhead and his kicking on goal is a feature.

SA U18 coach Brenton Phillips says: He's played predominantly as a key forward or a key back, but I actually think he has the ability to develop into a good midfielder. He has good touch, excellent endurance for a big man and also a good awareness when he's in or around the stoppages. People haven't heard a lot about Phil because he played a lot of school footy so you sort of lose track of him. He's originally from the ACT so he hasn't had a really big schooling in the game of Aussie rules and having played a bit of rugby he is a very strong and aggressive tackler.

I dunno how many points he will score, but you need someone on that bench, and he sounds good enough.
 
Nothing that crash hot about him at all. He's just one of the ones that looks most likely to play. Shepheard, Moore, Waters are another few in the same boat. No doubt the guy picked to be the 7th defender by most will be the lucky SOB that is picked to play rd 1.

He will probably be the one to take over Andy Otten's role. He was mighty close to getting a game towards the end of last season.

Will love it if Davis turns out to have a season like Otten did last year. (starts licking lips) :D:thumbsu:

He is a somewhat different player to Otten.

For a start, he is 195cm. That doesn't exactly make him suited to playing tall or small and ultimately being set for a role closer to the guts, as Otten was this year before his injury.

He is certainly a candidate, but most certainly did not impress in NAB1
 
Don't reckon he'll get much of a game to be honest. I'm a crows man and I'm staying well clear of him. body isn't quite there and I reckon Symes - Sellar - Stevens will take over some of ottens duty and the load will be shared.
However, I'm not actually on the crows selection committee so don't take anything i say as gospel.
My prediction 3-7 games av. 30-45 and won't play rd1

This is pretty much spot on for me. I'm no expert in Supercoach but Davis is more a KPP, will likely eventually develop into a CHF in the future (that's where the club appears to have earmarked him), and he doesn't have the mobility of Otten to play small and tall. I have heard Neil Craig briefly mention this in an interview recently that Davis can't play small like Otten can. Davis is probably a good 2 years away from showing us what he is really made of. He probably will get games this year but he may only play half the season, unless one of our KPP's go down an then he may be forced to play more. Probably isn't much of a cash cow. He is still a boy in a man's body. From all reports on the Adelaide board, he has a lot of talent but he's still maturing into his 196cm frame. He needs to put some meat on those bones for starters! For memory, Otten's body was more AFL ready this time last year than Davis this year.
 
A month or so ago Neil Craig said Scott Stevens was most likely to take over Otten's role from last year so Davis needs to find another way in. He is really a KPP as others have said. The next few games should give us a better idea.

Why the hype? It's the forum team effect I think. Some picked him out early as a back rookie because he's from the 08 draft and Crows fans were predicting he would take over from Otten. The names gets dropped in early draft teams and then everyone's on board! He's not been hyped in any official reports from the club.
