Doesn't cut it ! Needs to go, and Katich back in for Sri Lanka.
Had a big chance today and blew it magnificently.:thumbsd:

Give the kid a chance ffs. Dropping him all the time ain't going to help him. Now that they have selected him they have to perservere with him. Give him another series at least to prove himself. I got no doubt he will given a chance.

Needs to go back to shield for at least a season or two and sort out his technical deficiencies.
No reason to close the door on his test career forever, he's only 22 so time is on his side but right now he is not a test batsman.
Even that ball that got him today, whilst it was a ripper, he could have let it go through to the keeper. Poor judgment and his hands are just too hard at the ball. Needs to take a leaf out of Strauss and Cook's book, they have very soft hands when playing a defensive stroke so on the rare occasion in this series when they have nicked the ball often it is on the way down to the slips. Plus they well and truly know where their off stump is and know exactly which balls to let go.

He can do that away from the pitch. Keep him in the Test side though. He has plenty of time after this series to get it right. Provided he has a competent coach to guide him.

i disagree, test cricket is not the place to sort out your deficiencies.
He'll just be sorted out time and time again on the international stage with his current issues. Best to drop down a level and work it out away from the spotlight and pressure of international cricket.

How long do we perservere with him?

There is no doubt that Katich is a better player at this point of his career so it will be insightful to see what the selector's do. Stay with the young buck with obvious deficiences or go with the tried and proven (we have severly missed Katich this series and his fight - it has been understated).

I watched almost every ball he played against South Africa and I actually think it is confidence thing. He looked awkward but was playing Stein bowling at 150 with a lot of time and looked more solid. He has not played with the same time.

England have made him look very exposed and he was picked out of form.

I think Hughes has to make runs in the shield and if he does take him to Sri Lanka.

He is a player that could be like our version of Shewag and needs to be managed so he can get that confidence back. He was breaking records in county cricket when he made 4 100's in 5 innings leading up to the Ashes.

The other option may be to play him in the one day side to increase his confidence. He could be a match winner in the world cup.

i really don't see him making it. his technique is just so awkward. i know he has scored runs against south africa and in shield cricket. so he clearly has a fair degree of talent, but there are plenty of talented players he get found out over time which is what i think is happening to him at the moment.

his weakness off his hips is such an unusual problem for a batsmen - perhaps that's why he has gone through the grades with such ease. rarely are bowlers going to try and get a batsmen out by bowling at his thigh pad all day. if you did that to mark waugh his test average would've been up around bradman's.

i hope he proves me and the doubters wrong. god knows we need more batsmen scoring runs.

Haven't seen heaps of him but it seemed like he tried to be overly defensive, which isn't his natural game

Granted you can't come out in a test and treat it like an ODI, but him grinding his way to 6 from 40 balls today was painful to watch

also drop that usman khwaja another overrated nsw player that failed twice.

usman will be a very solid player. fantastic technique. not a lot of power, but enough.

he kinda shot through the ranks out of nowhere about 7 years ago. he was a good player as a youngster but not a real standout. then in 03/04 or 04/05 he was suddenly playing first grade and scoring runs.

copped a pretty good nut in the second innings.

why do people rate usman so highly and hate hughes...sure usman has a better looking technique but hughes has proved he can churn out the runs consistently when in form...he isn't really in great form right now neither is the majority of the team.... but people saying his career is over, is a joke...he is only 22...usman looks solid but in my opinion so far extremely over hyped

I find his mental fragility to be more of an issue than the technique. Lapses in concentration, poor shot selction. I cant see how keeping him in the side would fix any of that. Wouldnt play him again for 2 years until he matures as a person and a cricketer.

yeah but you don't get the work out at state level that you do at test level.

Given his average this season, I think he's getting a fair workout from the state bowlers. He needs to learn to deal with that before getting thrown into the Test arena.
