Selectors have ruined him. He's in the test side, averaging 50 odd, destroying bowling attacks, comes across some good bowlers in England who have a smart plan and execute it very well, (lets not forget Strauss's catch), they get him out early a couple of times... oh OK lets drop him.

The people calling Hughes a "disgrace" and "pathetic" are ridiculous. He's in shocking form and is expected to play well against a very disciplined and skilled English bowling attack. He is a naturally agressive player with an odd technique so when he plays a loose shot and gets out it looks terrible. Don't hate him. Hate our selectors for their ridiculous decisions.

Yes he is expected to play well, this isn't kindergarten. This guy is meant to have tons of talent remember? So the English attack bowls a steady line and length to him. You know what he has to do - ADAPT. He hasn't.

Don't forget Langer justified Hughes' selection on the ridiculous basis of sparring sessions against him and how he tough he is. Like that is even 1% relevant. It's totally unrelated to being calm, relaxed and focused while playing test cricket.

Good PR though. And proved to be completely useless when it mattered.

Hellgood is right, but i still reckon he would've got found out at test level at some point, and probably fairly quickly. well he did get found out by the english in 2009, but we'll never know if he could've overcome it had they perserved with him.

Really?

I think there's been an obvious change. When he first came on the scene hhis back leg always kicked out to the leg side. He doesn't do that any more.

That's not to say he doesn't have other technical flaws, however, but I think there's a pretty obvious change.

Was that back when he used to make runs??

You can pretty much guarantee that he will be caught behind the wicket.

I do recall that he was bowled during the Ashes though.

His technique is a joke.

Katiich' technique is a bigger joke, but you know when you work out your game you can bat through it

Hughes has been advised poorly since his dropping. It's very obvious the message he got was to cut out the extravangance and play straight, and now his body is getting squared up to balls sliding passed him. He use to rock on the back foot and punch those through the off side, but now he's trying to play them with a straight bat. The only way out for him is to start playing horizontal bat again.

Fast forward a year or so... averages 17 in shield cricket, in horrible form, Katich out, Marsh and Khawaja in great form, oh thats right lets bring him in and hope he recaptures his form of 2-3 years ago. Yep what a surprise, averages 16 for the series. What wonderful selectors we have.

Totally agreed, and add to that picked against same team he struggled against, on the pitch which is most conducive to said game plan in the world.

Add to that it was Marsh's home pitch and you really have to question their sanity.

Hughes looked better as the series went on, but the selectors could have near ruined his carer

Fair question. It is one thing to change your technique, but it is not much good if that change in technique hasn't actually improved your technique.

If a batsman is consistently getting out caught behind the wicket, it points to poor footwork/technique. Matty Hayden had a similar issue in the early stage of his first class/test career. His footwork (or lack thereof) made it look like he was carrying lead in his shoes. He was sent back to domestic cricket & to his credit worked his arse off (with assistance from his brother) to improve his technique to a point of becoming one of the best batsman in the world. I haven't see anything to suggest that Hughes has done the hard work to improve his game.

Exactly. And plays in exactly the same irresponsible way, which suggests he's too arrogant to think he needs to change.
