Jesus, that's rough. Sorry to hear what you went through but also very glad that you are still with us.

Completely understandable phobia. I can relate, somehat. My wife was in a pretty bad car accident before we met and while I wouldn't say she's got a phobia of traffic or driving in the same way you've described. She's definitely pretty nervy when driving experiences aren't going 1000% predictably. She's actually far more relaxed when driving herself which is probably due to the control factor.
Yeah I can understand that. I don’t drive myself but feeling as though you have some control over events, even if not full control, is probably better.

I imagine there are any number of people that have discovered that you can feel so safe that you don’t even give it a thought, and then some random event suddenly wakes you up to danger coming from nowhere you were prepared for.

I would imagine most people would be the same after that PG. Thats horrible.
Fortunately I had done my “Great Ocean Road” trip to Apollo Bay before then. It’s such a beautiful drive, but in holiday season I swear it attracts more dickheads on the road than anywhere I have seen! Dunno if I would want to do it now.

I have a recollection that you are, or were, in Lorne so I’d say you have some experience with the freaks on the road in the holiday season

I was probably one of those idiots tbh. Not excusing it or saying it was fine, just thought I knew the road better than pretty much anyone else. Wouldnt do it nowadays, im older and wiser. Seen plenty of people come unstuck around there and it can be easily result in death if you do.

I remember when we did it and cars were banked up behind a grey army caravan sight-seer. So we’re all patiently waiting for an overtake lane to move on. Once it arrives the nice caravan retirees do the right thing and try to let everyone pass, and nearly get cleaned up by some dickheads in an Audi convertible coming the other way. Pretty sure those guys didn’t know the roads though - it was schoolies season. I reckon they were from Toorak. I’d like to think so anyway. That road is insane in summer

Snakes I’m okay with. Even though I grew up in Canberra with a metric shit-tonne of brown snakes that have a pretty nasty bite. But even though I used to do a bit of casual soft hiking, and you see a fair few, it kind of feels like if both parties agree to let the other alone, there are no big dramas.

I do have a friend that lives on the outer suburbs of Canberra whose Labrador died from snakebite in their backyard (dogs don’t have the same live and let live instincts) so I probably would be more cautious if I had a dog with me.

I was in a very mild accident about 11 years ago and the first 12-24 months after that I found it really hard to do over 90 on the freeway. Even now I get nervous if I have people in the car and will do around 90-95 (If I'm by myself I'm fine though).

As for the phobias I'm shocking with heights and European wasps - got stung once as a kid and I can't sit still if there is one around. Also will squish centipedes on sight the vile little things. Never had an issue with spiders or snakes though.

God I have so many phobias I don't even know where to start lmao, probably easier to go with the things I'm not afraid of.
Feel free!

Also I’ve betrayed your trust, Toump. I’m pretty sure I didn’t say floridly at work today. I’ll do better tomorrow. If it helps, I did say every other slightly random word that floated through my head. Good fun! I’m looking after a gaggle of new starter employees until their real boss comes back from holiday. Freaking them out is something I think I am doing really well so I’m sticking with my strengths

I can’t change a lightbulb because of fear of heights, and wasps of the European variety freak me out, even though I haven’t been stung.

Being cautious driving with passengers seems a good thing, but I’m sorry that it might have been via a stressful incident. Much better than being some ****wit who reckons they are a great driver so speed limits shouldn’t apply. Even if you are a top notch driver, nobody can anticipate the behaviour of others on the road.

Centipedes is an interesting one. I’m not great with slugs but I don’t think I’ve given much thought to centipedes

It's ok PG, I let you down too!

Had some nice lady at the op shop tell me she liked my windcheater, but all I could muster up was a "Oh, cheers! Thank you!!"... Really shoulda given her a bit of "Thanks, but it's a bit too floridly don't you think?". Dropped the ball BIG TIME on that one!!

(This is the windcheater)

Will probably wear it again tomorrow and see if I can catch any bites!!

I don't like very heavy rain. Wouldn't call it a phobia, however.
I love heavy rain, in fact I love rain in general. I'm certainly a pluviophile though this was realised around 10 years ago while in Seattle and Portland. I can pinpoint the exact location and where I was when I had this revelation that rain was something bigger and more meaningful to me personally. I was at a cafe in Portland called Good Coffee (just a brilliant name - it was the cafe that showed up when I googled good coffee nearby and boom, there it was!), looking out to the intersection as the rain pelted down and the world just went by peacefully. I think back to times where I've sat in the rain and embraced it, heavy or light.

Anyway, another phobia I have is a classic, not great with heights! In particular, when there's no guard rail or something to prevent an inadvertent step. I have laid on the edge of the Grand Canyon at a section where it was a vertical drop and while I have a big head (sorry Headless), the sudden fear of all of my weight shifting forward as I looked literally directly down to instant death was enough to just do me for good.

Maybe I should stop traveling...

Thanks for the invite here Proper Gander and Headless - always happy to see familiar faces around these parts :)

My biggest phobia doesn't have a term - at least not one that I can find however, my biggest fear is accidentally committing tax fraud or anything related to that.
That’s a bit different.

I just assume I’m probably accidentally committing tax fraud somehow.

Could be related to my weird thing where whenever someone goes “look - there is a police car over there” I always sort of shrink down in my seat because I think they are looking for me. No idea why. I don’t recall committing any crimes that would require patrol cars on the alert to locate me

I think there's definitely a connection in that, somewhere deep.

Maybe they are linked as I also like rain and hate heights

Was never afraid of heights until my mid 20's when for no reason I developed an unhealthy fear of heights. The irony of that is I soon after that took up a job which forced me to work at heights which helped a bit. Once I stopped that job however I came back in full.
