If you could choose any CHB in the league, who would you choose ?
Now ask yourself, would you swap the No 2 pick for that player ?

I think that is a pretty subjective way of looking at it.
I don't think position should matter if the kid we draft is the second best player in the draft.

On Hansen, he's got more potential than just a CHB. He's got a bit of Wellman/McPhee about him. But he could also play forward.

I would trade the number 2 pick for an 18 year old Dustin Fletcher.

But Dustin is a full back - they are valuable.
CHB's these days - meh !!!!

Personally would not be surprised if Hansen slipped out of the top 5. The draft seldom turns out exactly how it was predicted.

Happy to bet that Jetta will be chosen in front of him. You'll have to give me odds though. :D

Bradshaw/Brown - fair enough.
Hall/O'Loughlin - O'Loughlin is hardly a CHF
Hansen is a roaming HFF type - great player but to play a power CHB on him would be extremely foolish.
Seaby comes off the bench.
Riewoldt - see Hansen
Hamill - now a cripple and is basically there to create a contest.

So we draft a CHB to basically play against one team (Brisbane).
Not very smart.

And just to illustrate the foolishness.

I dont recall mooting the idea of using our first pick for a CHB. You're suggesting Tarrant could fill the role as CHB which typifies foolishness. Theres not a defensive aspect to his game whatsoever from memory. I like Hunter/Glass from WCE, McGuire/S. Fisher from STK, Carroll/Ferguson from Melb, Birchall/Roughhead from the Hawks, Egan from Geelong, Johnson/Polak from Freo, Bock/Rutten from Adelaide, Merrett from Brissy.

If I were to take my pick, I couldnt go past Johnson from Freo. Reads the play well, takes marks, creates space and more importantly makes himself accountable for almost every possession.

Its pointless to suggest CHB isnt useful these days. It really depends on strategy and whats transpiring throughout the course of the game. There is such a thing as having more than one game plan. Sure, it seems more goals are scored from the middle with the fleet footed types..however, on the basis of a counter attack...a CHB could force this same strategy out wide towards the flanks or perhaps on the 50 metre arc.
Most teams will attempt to get the ball quickly up the corridor in the shortest amount of time possible....a mobile mountain down back could be just the solution to nullify this sort of thing and force a turnover.

An example of this (hoping I pull my argument off here well enough..) is Liverpool...they have a 7 foot plus forward called Crouch, and 2 lightning quick forwards in Bellamy and Kuyt. Coach Benitez deems up until virtually kick off who he starts on the park, depending on the strategy he thinks he should begin with, yet also has the flexibility to revert to plan B at any given time.

Drafting a CHB would create another option for us should the opposition call an audible before the ball is bounced or throughout the course of the game.

If J.Brown and Riewoldt didn't dominate against us this year we would have had 5.5 wins, Freo game would have been very close if Pavlich was quieter and if someone like Hansen could of done a better job than Kepler on Richo then there's another win we would have had

You'd have to agree that if there was any hint of Taz coming to Essendon, we would have to relinquish one of our tall forwards. I say this is if he were to be used as linkman/backman and failed...his bread n butter is as a forward, which would mean he'd have to justify his selection to the Essendon faithful and fast. He has talent, but his application is questionable to my liking.

no doubt

Chad Cornes.

Yes.

Every club would give up a #1 pick for a young Chad Cornes. Some (perhaps most?) would even give up a #1 pick for the current Chad Cornes.

I haven't seen Hansen play but some descriptions of him sound a bit like the Chad. CHB's like that can dominate games of footy, so i definately wouldn't rule him out from our #2 pick because he's a CHB.

We have always stuggled against big CHF's, ie Hall, Tredrae, Brown etc. This is how I see it, get Thornton and play him at CHB. Pick Hansen in the draft if Carlton don't and give him the time he needs to beef up to play CHB. By this stage Fletcher will be about to hang up the boots and have Thornton ready to fill this role.

So Merv this is for you

Because he has such a long history of trading his first round draft picks?

Your a ****ing idiot. Go and get the rest of the quote. Go on, back to page 2.

Merv in today's age apparently thornton is considering being traded to hawthorn because they are offering 3 years at 300,000, dont know why we dont offer 3 years at 330,000.

The rest of the quote was redundant because the first part makes it so.

You said knowing Sheedy, knowing Sheedy would involve knowing he doesn't trade his early picks.

Keep it above the belt, thanks.

I replied to this is the who should we get thread
here is my reply

Don't be put off us getting Thornton, by the talk in the papers.
IF we feel he is right for us, we are in a far better position to get him than Hawthorn.
If it's PSD then hes ours and if its trades we have earlier picks and Laycock, who i think Carlton would go for, with their current ruck situation.
For me the only way the Hawks will get him, is if we don't want him.

Sheedy will not show his hand until it is required he does so

$4.00 and you have a deal....Name how much you want to bet

$4.25
After all, every person who has never seen either of them play has already pencilled in Hansen as a lock for pick 3.

$20 @ $4.25.
I don't want to cripple you.:D
