Pick 27

I supported the whole first draft pick idea but in hindsight I'm coming around to the idea of putting an end to it. First player picked in the draft doesn't always mean that much. This year for example, the club's number one recruit is clearly Adam Treloar. Followed by Aish, who would be a number one scalp any other year. Then Howe. Then whoever is left at pick 27, who will spend a decent amount of time in the Magoos while they have the number. The number 35 is arguably more about Peter Daicos than it is about Presti. It is to me anyway. Having it run around the VFL just seems a bit of a waste.

Yes.

But Daicos jr and jr jr will both make it...

Terrible problem to have! I'm excited.
Extremely optimistic. Nick is a good prospect, but Josh has shown nothing so far to suggest he'll even get drafted when he's eligible next year.

And who is going to play up forward with him in a few years when the team is hitting its straps?
I reckon Cloke will play for another 5 years. Tall forwards hang around like pav, Riewoldt, brown etc.

So I don't think we need to panic just yet.

I think we are building a side to win a flag with Cloke and Pendlebury still in it. If that wasn't the case, we would trade out Cloke and get 2 first round draft picks off Freo.

I think we are very much thinking short term now. The club would feel they have the right playing group now...its just about rounding it off with the right talent.

We will get a forward in due course. As has been shown, drafting is not the only way to get a gun. We are a destination club and can attract talent via trade. I think we will see in the next 5 years a real trend towards building via trade for strong teams.

With our pick at 27 this year we will take best available. If that's a tall so be it. But our biggest need is pace

Still, nothing we can do about the academy players. They won't be available to anyone else either. Lets hope we find another Beams with that pick.

At a minimum you'd hope the team's who'll get academy kids are forced to pay top dollar for them. The more of their picks they have to use the better off we are.

Pick 27 isn't really apick this year, the club obviously targeted the trade period and didn't rate the draft so think we are happy with the talent we have now to start having a serious crack at the flag in the next 2-3 years.
Pick 27 will be best available as the club is happy with he state of the list now.

WHile I'm sure they feel we are in good shape for the next few years I'm also sure that they are quite aware of the fact that we're incredibly thin at the KPP spots for our next couple of "generations" (18-22, 23-26). We are pretty much set for midfielders now (although you can never have too many bigger bodied midfielders with pace who can run all day and use the pill effectively), so I'd expect the focus to shift to KPP's and perhaps a small goal kicking forward or two for the next couple of years.

I think I remember ~scout~ mentioning a few weeks ago on EBW that outside speed and a developing KPF were at the top of our list of needs at the moment. If McKay was available at our first pick I'd be surprised if we didn't grab him. Seems like the type Hine loves. Young (doesn't turn 18 until Xmas), showed a bit despite very little exposure to an elite system, and has the flexibility to play multiple positions.

Personally I think he will be a ripper of a player in 2-3 years of being in an AFL system.

If he is available at 27, the club would have to snap him up, is raw so has the potential to grow into a very promising KPP. And like you say is still only 17.

Id be keen on an Isaac Smith type. Actually if we could wind the clock back and draft Smith that would be awesome. Lol. Seriously though mature age winger with elite speed and good skills would be perfect. Are there any mature age recruits worth picking up in this mould?
Varcoe?
Howe can play a wing role to forward

Absolutely with you on that. I think it was a fantastic sentiment to honor the sacrifice Presti made to put the team first on the eve of the big one, but to never see a player make that number their own just like Presti did is a massive shame. I'm sure we could have thought up something else that would have sufficed, like a club trophy or something.
Maybe once peter Daicos' (remember that wearer of 35?) son comes along we may see a change in policy and it becomes his.
Not fussed, am happy for a first drafted number tradition, or not.
Maybe 42 can be revived as well.

Elliot wore the number 35 and he wasnt a draft pick, Aish or Treloar might get asked to rep the 35.

I was Thinking Treloar could Wear it for 2 years as we gave up 2 years of 1st Rounders

Pretty hard to tell at this point Dave. Phantom drafts are never right this early, especially outside the first round.

I know but his Type not normally last that long. Espically in a Shallow Draft

No chance our marquee recruit will be wearing 35 and changing numbers within a year or two. Outside of Elliot jumpers Treloar will be very close to being a best seller. He'll want to start creating his own

Just read a couple of the phantoms and 2 out of 3 have us with pick 32. One actually has Freo taking Ben McKay at 27. We do have pick 27 right? I didn't just dream that part of trade week I hope.
