The issue is that the league has a number of clubs that neighbour other leagues and the ability to attract and keep players is now influenced more by travel due to increase travel costs .
Exactly my point there is clubs in the Picola league that have struggled with recruitment and are still struggling largely in part because of their distance from any major city or town. The argument is already in place for “why would we drive out of Melbourne and pass all these other clubs on the way out to you”. Adding extra travelling aspects to these players minds might just see them join a club closer to Melbourne

At what point does the Picola league get to stand up for it self and say no. Already taken on fair share of clubs last few years. Which i understand wanting to make football available for everyone but there comes a point where the league has to think of its own clubs
I agree, the Picola league clubs need to think of themselves first before trying to accommodate club that’s are in an unfortunate situation.
Jerilderie and Blighty should never have to play against Finely who were one point of a Premiership in the Murray League.
Also it reduces the chances of them recruiting aging players from Finley.

I played a year against hay and I can say the club i played for looked forward to bus trip there, we did it twice that year, once for home and away and to play finals. Never once in the golden rivers was a one off trip to hay a reason for not been able to recruit a footballer. I think geographically hay are best suited to picola, but as others have said through afl funding they receive they'll head to the central murray

If Hay entered the PD you would have 16 clubs.

If it was a North / South split like years gone it would be an 8 and 8 split which is certainly viable. Play everyone twice - 7 home and 7 away games. The ideal number would be 10 teams per league with 9 home and 9 away like the O&M or other city leagues.

SOUTH
  1. Waaia
  2. Katandra
  3. Katamatite
  4. Tungamah
  5. Dookie United
  6. Katunga
  7. Strathmerton
  8. Rennie
NORTH
  1. Berrigan
  2. Deni Rovers
  3. Picola United
  4. Tocumwal
  5. Jerilderie
  6. Blighty

Thoughts on games this weekend.

Dookie v Picola
Katandra v Blighty
Katamatite v Jerilderie
Mathoura v Strathy
Rennie v Katunga
Toc v Deni
Tungamah v Berrigan

Hay travel 3 hours plus every away game now and have done so for 50 years. They are a fantastic club. To do it once a year is good for team moral on a bus. I think a couple of clubs will merge and couple go to the Loddon Valley with ultima to go to the central murray
Yes can speak from personal experience it’s a great weekend going to hay. Bus trip there and back is brilliant and also a brilliant weekend when staying up there aswell.

Yes for senior football and netball teams. How about a 6am Start for the family who have to play 11/u netball and football and then not get home until 9pm?
Dookie used to have that start back in the central Goulburn days heading to Thornton Eildon and Alexandra

I reckon the toc v deni could be close. Interesting Barwon heads star forward Brock Close is playing for Toc today.

You do realise that all clubs in the golden rivers did that for over 40 years going to hay and the trips further. They'd save 1100ks a year playing in your league and for once a year you'd have a whinge, what an entitled rats tossbag you are
Ha ha. Name calling I see. Real big of you.

You do know it's 2025 and not 1985 things have changed from 40 years ago. Hay have less teams for one don't they? Kids and families will stop playing if made to travel more. You can rant and rave all you want, and yes it is unfair for clubs like Hay, but families aren't going to consider that when choosing a club to play at. I don't know the history of the Golden Rivers but I'm guessing they have had clubs fold or move out of the league for this very reason. Maybe that says something.

Yes the North/South split could work again but if it is one competition it is not looking after our current clubs. Southern Clubs will lose future families joining just for that reason. So maybe look at the bigger picture for all clubs. It's not just senior players we need to look at it's the whole competition from our 11/u up.

Hay have more sides now in footy. Nully moved because of a bigger challenge and were proactive in merger talks even though they were going well. They proved that by making the grand final in their first year in the north central, which would be like a picola club going to the murray league and making a grandvfinal. Quamby folded because there's zero kids living there. No family thought, shit we're playing hay let's find another club, thats too far to drive once a year.

There's less kids living in smaller towns now, there's going to be more mergers and more travel to play community sport, im not sure it will matter anyway as hay receive assistance from the afl, that would probably stop if they join picola, so I'd imagine theyll just keep travelling more

Trent I’m not sure there is any truth to this.
It seems to get rolled out a lot , but denied internally .
Case of others attempting to downplay the great work the club does ?

Half way through the season, what’s the thoughts on the back end of the season? I reckon it’s gonna get tight at the top with a few clubs making recruitment changes late.

Waaia and katandra look classy with some real star players. Katty not far behind with their big guns back. Berrigan one to watch with some big ins (although are they good fits to your club the guys they’ve brought in?).

I asked the question about the Pearce medal earlier this season, I think Leighton Daly has to be favourite now. All reports he’s flying. Trower may steal votes off him but he’s right up there. Ferguson doing his thing and Bell at katandra seems to be bringing his own footy each week but has a lot of good players to take votes off him.

I think we are in for a great back end of the season. Few sides all shaping up to give waaia a run for their money.

What’s everyone else think?

Two divisions wouldn't be the worst idea if Moulamein and Hay came in.

Would allow these clubs to have a new home and would put the minds of the southern clubs at ease over travel (I'll admit that I haven't done the sums for the difference for the northern clubs based on split v no split).

Or 9-9 (18 rounds with 16 matches and two byes).
Over recent years, the bye seems to have become more popular at grassroots level as it allows a refresh or reset for teams to nurse niggles or ailments and it also allows families to have a weekend together mid-season.
