No Martin Clarke, Sharrod Wellingham or Danny Nicholls. Looks like we're taking this one pretty seriously. Also, Brad Dick and Paul Medhurst are named.

Against the grain of recent rumours, Josh Fraser is also playing. We have Toovey but no Iles, Cox is in, Harry's back and so is Ben Davies.

They don't seem to be put off by his 68 kgs. I guess they're rewarding him for good form and hard work, but you'd have to think Dick may defy predictions and debut sometime this year.

So no Lonie, Bucks, Didak, Holland, Anothony, Rusling, Brown.

Well pretty close to a full team. I would think only Lonie & Bucks would be in come round 1.

Good to see Medders & D/ck back, I would of thought they were still one week away! :thumbsu:

Don't know why, I just reckon Medhurst will kick a few 5 to 6 goal hauls this year for the pies. Doesn't need to many opportunities to kick goals.

Looks like Reid is being given every opporunity to play round 1

So much for the rumour about Fraser's knee!

yeah so much for that....looks good and yeah we probs will take this 1 slightly more seriously, good to see medders back. hmm i think its going to be a pretty interesting year for us especially in terms of watching our new generation of players.

Shannon Cox, Ben Reid, Brad D ick and Alan Toovey are the only ones playing that are yet to play a senior game.

Methinks the reason is that you don't want somebody else playing a blinder and making the selection decision harder. These four have probably shown the most of the youngsters in the pre-season, and so are most in-line to get a senior game in Rd 1 - This match will probably go a long way to deciding who gets the gig.

I could imagine they might have shortlisted those guys, and while they want a strong team playing the Tiges they also want to have a good hard look at those in line for a call up... but to suggest they don't want someone having a blinder sounds a bit unlikely!

I disagree, VV. The coaching staff will be thrilled if say Reid turns it on and happens to kick a few goals. Think of the competitiveness, i.e. competiting for spots - I don't want to see Rocca take it easy one week and the next, he needs to be competing at his best to remain in our best side and that goes for everybody else (including Nathan Buckley). If they (first and second-year players) exceed expectaions, as long as the team are a few players short, I've got no doubt that Mick will reward them by giving them a game or two in the seniors and/or promoting them onto the senior list.

Yes, but he's IN the squad.

I'm referring to the fact that they're not playing many other inexperienced players, like Cook, Nicholls, Stanley, Brown, or anybody else who hasn't had senior experience.

They've created a short list of young players that they are considering playing in Rd 1 based on consistent pre-season performance. The last thing they want is to make their decision harder by having Brent Macaffer kick 5 goals - Everyone will get their opportunity in due time, but there's only going to be one or two open spaces to fill in the side, and realistically, regardless of what anyone else does in this game, those four have been the best performers in the pre-season.

good to see rocca and fraser playing :)
Squad looks good
pitty we dont have a midfield
Id like to hear bee dees thoughts on frasers super recovery ;)
Hopefully him and medhurst kick a few anyway

I disagree. The last thing they want is having the decision made harder by everyone playing in mediocre fashion. A rookie popping up and kicking 5 goals would put a smile on their face, I would think.

Cook, Nicholls and Brown have all been given senior experience against the Roos - Your assessment is flawed.
Did I miss the part where pre-season games counted for anything?

We take intra-club matches more seriously than the take pre-season... They have yet to play an AFL game.

Alright, point taken - Not literally the last, but they would rather focus on getting practice time into guys who are potentially going to play Rd 1 than letting a rookie excel, when in reality, he's no chance to play Rd 1.

I would have thought that is bleedingly obvious that the final practice match is a proper dress rehearsal for Round one.

You dont use your understudies in the dress rehearsal, you use the main cast.

Selecting as strong a team as possible is logical. Picking the younger players was done in the earlier games, but now its time to start to get a bit serious about gameplans and genuine match practice.
