Not a match worth rewatching, but we played “okay” football, especially when you consider how bad Carlton’s flooding was.

You replace:
Mayne —> Aish
Greenwood —> Varcoe/ Elliot
Daicos —> Wells/ Brown
Appleby —> in-form Murray

We probably won’t get all of those 6 blokes back, but if we could get 3-4 in full flight, we could seriously be a finals threat

Speaking of Murray, does anyone have a mini-review of his performance in the 2's?? Didn't get a chance to watch the game, Murray in form (first two rounds) was immense, would be a great addition off half-back

Settle down I wouldn’t be so quick to declare Witherden ;)

It seemed that we went at a smidge above half rat power in that one, but that’s denying Carlton the plaudits they deserve for how well they structured up. They were brilliant at closing down the space 5-10 metres directly in front of the releasing kicker off half back. The number of times we had to second guess because of it was frustrating. Cripps was the standout player on the field and they were probably Kruezer going down from pushing us right to the line.

Two observations from being there live were the difference in positioning of Dunn and Jones as the spare. What Dunn has done has been nothing short of remarkable, however he struggles as the extra number to identify where the dangerous space is going to be. He’s much better served as a caravan as he would have been had Casboult played. Jones on the other hand was exceptional both one on one and as the spare. We could do worse than chasing him come years end.

The other one that was difficult to swallow live was the commitment to the contest. We overcommitted too much this week whereas Carlton basically said “you get in there Patty we’ll do the rest” and whilst I’m not sure it’s the best way to utilise him against us it worked.

Daicos and Mayne should be thankful for the lack of pressure on spots ATM because they were poor. Langdon and JT need those credits in the bank for that one (Langdon’s especially frustrating after his standout game v Melbourne). It was good to see Scharenberg bounce back a bit, but leaving him isolated v Curnow as much as we did didn’t help his cause. I don’t think there was much else to highlight individually because none of our guys really distinguished themselves, IMO. Bank the 4 points and move on is the best I can offer.

agree on Dunne. he is more suited to being on a man. Howe or Sharenberg would be better being the plus 1.

Sharenberg also got exposed when he got stuck on Curnow. He isn't ready/able to play on the key big. At his size and lack of leap maybe he will never be.

the kicking of Langdon & Phillips yesterday was awful. a couple of times they were lucky to hit their own foot.

IMO it was a great win - was so nervous about this game

Coming off the bye - we were just off. Watching the replay, Carlton are lucky that they weren’t behind by loads in the first half - we had so many “moments” that were slightly off
It was Carlton’s GF after the calamity of last week
Great win when things didn’t go to plan

Edit: how great was it when Shaz backed up and took the hit - scared the hell out of me - but reinforced how good he is
(Commentator made it all about Carlton player however...)

BTW - they are such weak snipers - go back and watch the melee...the number of times a Carlton “tough guy” ran forward to push/shove then run back to his mates was hilarious

Agree with everything but Wells. He is done unfortunately.

I think in having Moore or Reid back in the side should help in the defence with the Bigger bodies, this will then send either Maynard / Langdon up to the wing position. I wouldn't even mind seeing Howe ( despite how well his playing in defence ) I'd like to see Howe play the wing and float forward.

Adding Howe to our already nimble forward options would create such a nightmare for opposition coaches.

I don't understand the perceived issues coming off the bye.
During finals the top 4 have the opportunity to play for the week off and that is considered a great advantage and bonus Why different mid season?

I was booing Daisy from the start of the game Saintly.......what did he do to Greenwood I missed it?

Levi was manning the mark in a back pocket, Thomas snuck up on him from behind and caught Levi’s head with his shoulder on the pretext of a shepard .. basically a cheap shot from a very frustrated has been..

Imagine if we drafted Cripps instead of Freeman? We would be unstoppable.

Anyway, pretty average effort but glad we played Carlton after we turned up like that. So far from our best. Just keeping winning...

One of the worst games I have seen this year.... Frustration levels through the roof and from the opening bounce you could just tell it was going to drag out! But that was Carlton's grand final given the week they had in the media so to get the W is a great result in my book! They seem to save their best efforts for us but we don't do the same.... Cant believe we're 4th given the start to the year. Not even in my most optimistic moments did I think we were capable of a 9-2 run!

Some observations:
- The Fox commentary was cringe worthy throughout! I understand they need to call the game with a bias to the side trailing but Huddo was a flat out barracking! Not sure why they think that adds to the spectacle especially when you are alienating half of the audience.
- Josh Thomas; never seen him caught so much. Not sure if they put work into him or he was just off. Either way we missed his impact.
- Tom Langdon; Isn't timing his form particularly well.... Given we have been exposed by McDonald and Curnow in successive games it appears there is a for spot Darcy Moore again. Based on yesterday Langdon (or maybe Dunn) would be out if Moore was fit!
- Adam Treloar; We will be very lucky if he escapes with cramp. Although he was off in the second quarter, he was vital in the third and he really got us going when the side was flat!
- Scott Pendlebury; Not sure if its a good thing but he is still our most important player. I thought he was as influential as Cripps yesterday, so much work in close and 9 score involvements.
- Will Hoskin-Elliott; Pretty bankable now! Can beat his opponent in a number of ways and finishes well.
- Jaidyn Stephenson; What a weapon! Missed an easy one that was probably his only blemish for the day, his pressure and chasing was relentless too!

Love the fact that we are winning games that we would have let slip last year. We are also not relying on the same few players every week.... Good signs all round!

No one gives a shit but oh well. Heres my 2 cents.

At no point today did Carlton ever really look like winning. They were horrible, although skills by both weren't great either but we came out on top. They're gameplan isn't to win rather to steem bleeding and sort of look ok coming out of it. If Bolton wants to continue to do that then we'll just keep taking the Ws against em.

To see how hard Brodie Grundy works, go to a match, it's amazing how much running and work he does for a Ruckman.
De Goey worked his way into the game before half time and loved how he bullied the small kids of Carlton in the midfield.
Pendles game was interesting, he's so elite in his positions and that goal, was sitting behind it and it was magical, but there still was a few times where he got caught out on Cripps, mainly because Cripps didn't wanna work hard enough to man up Pendlebury, which is something I don't think will get highlighted.

Weitering was holding Cox every chance he got in packs, same crap every week, hardly any attention by the umpires.

Daisy is a flog and he'll get weeks for his bump that concussed Greenwood. Cam O'Shea on Stephenson was hilarious, Stephenson looked like the older and much wiser compared to him. O'Shea shouldn't be on a AFL list.

Scharenberg was courageous had a pretty good game, same as Howe.

Mayne and Thomas were easily our worst, hate saying that but they weren't on compared to recent weeks, Mullett exposed Maynes lack of speed on the wing a few times and Mayne often gets confused at times on who he should be on. Thomas just looked slow today, maybe that Hamstring issue played a part.
Agree with all of this. Scharenberg running back with the flight was gutsy!! Then he earned a free at the bottom of a pack 2 minutes later!

6 o'clock finish and a drive home to Bendigo, didn't get home till just on 8pm. I'd hate to have a young family that had school the next day to prepare for. And Bendigo isn't far relative to the distance some drive. I can understand it when they need a 3:20pm game to accommodate the f2a broadcasters but no f2a coverage today so why not a traditional 2:10pm start.
Yeah, but the flip side is what you get to do with your day before hand.

If coming from Bendigo, your day is basically dedicated to the footy with a 2hr drive before and after...so big up to you if you make that trip most weekends!! What happens with night games?

If from the burbs and it takes you under an hour to get to the game, having a 3:20 start means you actually have time to do things before hand - kids sport, shopping, gardening, kids bday parties - footy becomes one part of a productive day...home by 7 and plenty of time for quick dinner (if you didn’t plan ahead with food at the G), shower, book and bed.

The Sunday 1:10 slot for mine is terrible because it means the entire day is basically shot if you want to go...and often you will have a clash with kids sport, or a kids bday party which tend to be around lunchtime...so family sh1t ends up actually preventing a day at the footy at the supposedly ‘family friendly’ time. 2:10 is pushing it if your kid has 10:30 footy game on Sunday morning.

Where the 3:20 game means you actually can still do the family activities, watch the lil tackler play u11s, pop in to that bday party at bounce etc., and then still bring the lil monsters to the footy.

The biggest issue is actually normally getting the kids to bed, but after a big day including the footy, again my experience is they get home and it is one of the few times they are happy to go to bed because they are exhausted...no monkey business and they are out minutes after the head hitting the pillow.

Everyone has their own specific circumstances, but for mine Sunday 3:20 games work well from a family perspective. Also find the Sunday twilight game perfect from a TV perspective, again because the Sunday evening in winter is dead time...was great watching the Lions game with the kids on a Sunday evening, much prefer that than Sat or Friday night from a ‘family’ perspective.

Anyway long rant over, you can never please everyone with scheduling...go Pies.

sounded like a good game - unfortunately I had to listen to the radio, and Mick Malthouse, ...

Me too.

Listening to ABC and Malthouse was actually pretty solid.

He was definitely wearing his Collingwood guernsey. Apart from Cripps, Curnow and Jones he didn’t have a kind word to say about Carlton all game.

I don't think a single one of our better players besides maybe WHE had a "great" game. It was certainly ugly.

Howe, Scharenberg, Crisp, De Goey, Pendles, Sidebottom, Adams, Phillips, Thomas, Treloar, (good 3rd quarter), all arguably top 10 BNF this season, all had average games.

It was ugly buddy. There’s no other way to describe a game where flooding the defensive 50 occurs. It’s effective for preventing high scores, and your mob structured up well to do it, but to call it anything other than ugly footy is disingenuous.
