I thought thier would be a thread on this espionage thriller.

It has the lot

Hot women.
Drug dealers.
Homosexuality
Action
Drama
Political suspense
Infidelity
Jealousy
Inter racial sex
Love
Domestic violence
Some amazing locations
Indigenous history
Homelessness
Mental illness
Crime
Chinese history
Drone strikes

And much much more

Six part series that ended last nite. Obviously going to be another series with all the loose ends it left. Never really closing any of the five major story lines in the series

Some good acting and some average acting

Some interesting characters that could be explored more.

Rudi a forrner triple agent in the cold war who bats for the other side.

The Chinese buisnessman screwing the bases american boss's wife and stealing secrets with an indigenous female lawyer

Kitto the Australian boss of the bases ex husband who picks up a new chick every night , sometimes two knows he stuffed up cheating on his wife but she won't accept she married more to the job.

Gus the American Patriot who believes all the bullshit that his country cares about life and thinks they have a right to do what they want.

The hot Serbian refugee whose parents killed by american backed terrorists. Now working as system analyst for the Australians. Screwing Gus because her bosses told her to get close to him as they don't trust Americans. Americans told him the same.

Then theres jaqueline McKenzie playing the Australian boss at pine gap.
The voice of reason. Smokes ciggies as nobody screwing her. Still pissed kitto cheated so won't give him his cat

Then the American boss of base. To career orientated. Wife bored and screwing Chinese spy. He wants ambassordors job she just wants out of Alice springs. Although prepared to lie to potus for the general good. Doesn't believe America is always right. Respects Australian sovrignty.

Shows a human aspect few spy thrillers do. Stays away from hot sex scenes and nudity and fast cars most spy thrillers are into.

Can be seen on iview.

They're definitely planning on having a second season, given that they left so many threads dangling and unresolved.

The last scene before the closing credits put a real spin on things. The implication of this was that the incriminating text message was a fake, designed to throw the scent off the real culprit. We still don't know who the culprit is.

Neither the Chinese guy, nor the Aboriginal lawyer, have access to the base - so while they're clearly both involved, they're not the ones who actually re-coded the monitor and used the mobile phone to access the files. The Chinese guy probably provided the know-how for implanting the code, so it wouldn't have required someone with Moses' coding expertise to do it.

Is this show set for a return? Quite good .

It didn't rate particularly well on the ABC. Here are the 5 City Metro ratings figures for the 5 episodes (the first week was a double ep):
14th Oct: 581k
21st Oct: 433k
28th Oct: 362k
4th Nov: 368k
11th Nov: 348k

Last night's 348k was still good enough to be the 9th most watched show, so it's not a complete disaster. Excluding the news, last night's #1 was a repeat of a 7yo Queen documentary, on Channel Nein, which drew 691k viewers.

I'm not sure that those figures are good enough to see it renewed, even though ratings aren't as important to the ABC as they are with the commercial networks. The ratings declined pretty much every week, which is not a good sign...

However, it's a co-production with NetFlix, and that changes the equation. A lot will depend on how well it's received internationally by the NetFlix viewers.

My guess: 20% chance of renewal, 80% chance of cancellation.

Great summary.

Started slow, I nearly dropped it but the last two episodes were quite good.

Some of the acting is hit and miss. Jacqueline McKenzie is awesome as usual. Can't take Stephen Curry seriously as some bad ass, intimidating, womanising scoundrel. The bloke dug a hole FFS.

Will watch again if renewed.

He does come up a bit short in his acting. However it's a very complex character.

You know Gus ain't leaving doesn't need to prove himself to his father anymore. He does love her. Mackenzie told her to concentrate on her career and **** love. Yet thinks she herself a victim when kitto screwed around on her

they need a better actor for Gus.

The Indian thinks she caught him so has stitched her up in revenge

I think rudi is the spy. Alice springs for a gay spy is a lonely place and he comes across as a creep. He lied about being in the room the malware was set up. If he has nothing to hide he wouldn't. His defense to questioning was just that defense not rational

Hes very quick to judge yet played the victim card himself.
Alice is a place creeps thrive in. Probably blackmailed by the indigenous lawyer. She would be very aware of the predators who are attracted to a place like that

I did enjoy the bits of knowledge the series dropped.

The technology available at pine gap can track mh370 and would be the sought of place to be able plan the slip through the small gap in radar that flight took.

There is so many levels to this show

Classic south Australian television\ film. We are after all reliant on China and our great football club has a significant Chinese sponsor. So the politics undercurrent to the show fascinating

Thanks Vader.

Felt very derivative to me, affectations of realism but dramatically just another nonsense spy drama, and not an involving one at that. Has little depth and requires suspension of disbelief. Won't last very long, doesn't impress/convince in terms of procedural or intrigue.

I feel like most recent ABC-friendly Australian dramas have decent pitches at the moment, but the crew lack the vision to really pull it off and take it somewhere worth watching. I think the casting in Pine Gap is one of the stronger elements, not a big fan of the writing.
