Founding Member of Pink Floyd dies

From correspondents in London

September 16, 2008 12:18am

PINK Floyd founding member and keyboard player Richard Wright died today at the age of 65 after battling cancer, his spokesman said.

Wright wrote and sang several numbers from classic albums of the British progressive rock band, including Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

"The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness, that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer,'' said the spokesman.

"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.''

Sad to hear, to say he was part of something great would be an understatement!

R.I.P

Farewell.

I love the story about when he was sacked from the band by an increasingly authoritarian Roger Waters. He stayed on for The Wall tour as a salaried guest member, and by not being a full member he therefore avoided sharing in the costs of that over-budget tour.

Nooooooo. This has come as a bit of a shock. I didn't even know he was ill.

I guess there will come a day when all my childhood idols will be dead :(

Apparently his battle with cancer was only short so perhaps it was late being diagnosed. I'm not sure but it comes as a real shock.
Bloody cancer take another talented life.:(
Reckon I might spin a few Floyd albums tonight and have a beer for Richard.
RIP.

Farewell.

I love the story about when he was sacked from by an increasingly authoritarian Roger Waters. He stayed on for The Wall tour as a salaried guest member, and by not being a full member he therefore avoided sharing in the costs of that over-budget tour.

And as such he often joked about being the only one from that tour to make any money out of it!

He had some great moments in the early days of the band, some amazing contributions to their music/sound.

Rest in peace Richard.

At first when I heard it, I thought it was Richard Wright form "The Groop", an Aussie band from the 60's, relieved in one way, as he was a friend, but sad about the other. When will the musicians from the 60/70's live past 70? :(

a very very sad day for music.

easily the most underrated member of pink floyd. how often do you listen to a track from them and think the background melody is just perfect - 90% of the time that's his keyboard work.

i was desperately hoping live 8 wasn't going to be a one-off but i am wrong.

rest in peace man. the great gig in the sky will live on forever.

Very sad:(
RIP

I'll throw on Dark side of the moon tonight and have a farewell beer.
I think I might do the same now that you mention it (only just found out about it shortly ago). Also Gilmore's DVD 'Dave Gilmore In Concert' has a couple of Rick Wright appearances which were great.

Loved his humble yet brilliant approach to music. His performance of "Wearing the Inside Out" still a modern day classic.

RIP

i only just heard the news...... i'm gonna listen to 'the great gig in the sky', 'us and them', and 'summer '68' before i hit the sack

a great musician (and singer) who will be missed....i always like how he came across whenever i saw him interviewed

i wish he got shown a bit more during live 8....the director hardly cut to him......anyone watching who wasn't a fan would have thought he was just a session player roped in for the gig
