We won't be taking any risks the year. Won't be drafting on "X-factor" alone. We will draft hard working mids. Not a good draft for Essendon to take risks. Some think it is due to the loss of picks. But really, it isn't!

Yeah no we won't just be drafting mids, Bomber himself has said we will be taking a ruck man/kpf in the draft and from all reports the club is really keen on Apeness at 26, but if that didn't eventuate you'd think they'd take a small forward/mid I.e. JKH or Garlett with 26, and either Brown, Nankervis or hopefully Conlon with 55.

Bomber has all but confirmed it's not going to happen. Give up ffs

I don't like the idea of getting a ruck like Apeness for the sake of getting a ruck. He seems mediocre at best and will take several years to mature enough to play senior footy which does nothing for our immediate need for ruck depth. Using our early pick on a guy who may well not be on the list in 4 years seems really dumb, we aught to be looking for safer options that still tick off list deficiencies that we have.
We wouldn't be getting him just because we need another ruckman, from all reports Apeness is probably also the 3rd best key forward available as well (behind Boyd and McCarthy). If we thought we needed immediate ruck depth we'd be talking to Jolly or something. Besides our ruck and key forward issues (which are huge as with Hille retiring and Gumby moving on we realistically have no depth in that position), other than that we need to fill that 3rd tall role (which I see Marsh and Reynolds of being the best options there, would prefer Marsh because he's so fast, etc.), then we need a small forward/mid as that position is largely up for grabs right now.
In the rookie draft I see us as possibly giving Fuller a chance as a mature-age mid/rebounding defender, and probably get a project KPP or ruckman.

i still feel we need to draft a "quality" ball winner, someone who can actually win his own ball on the inside, were slowly getting better at it as a club but still every time Jobe doesn't play the only other guy who can seriously win his own ball his heppell, and against good sides you cant just have one guy going in and under or you'll get smashed. we have some "nice" players developing but there never going to be able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and get that important clearance when we need it. when it comes down to 5 minutes left in the 4th quater the hawks can throw Mitchell, lewis, Sewell and hodge in the centre square and they will fight tooth and nail for the ball were as i can only see jobe and heppell as certainties for us.

if jkh is there at 26 i really hope we take him (unless matt crouch is there witch i doubt), he will be the small forward we need cause Davey's gone and lets face it, jetta's no good and i cant see dell'olio making the big step up to afl level that we need. might end up being an AVERAGE afl player if we are lucky but we don't want/need average, we need more than that. kommers more defensive and merret will eventually push to high half fwd wing area, sadly Paul Chapman is our best small forward by a mile. he probably will be when he retires unless we draft a decent small this year. I'm fine with the club taking a ruckman with pick 55 as long as they get a decent player at 26 that fits something we need/have a hole in the area. matt crouch is my favourite player in this years draft and i really really really really really hope he slides to 26 (highly unlikely) best extractor by far, and would thrive off learning off the best extractor in the game (jobe)like when jobe first came into the system he had knocks on his kicking and his fitness, so very similar players except hight. if jkh isn't there and crouch isn't i reckon we need to get best ball winner there is left

I agree with this 100%, we just need to keep building the midfield, hopefully to the point 3-5 good players have to miss out each week.

spot on. hawks were able to drop sewell this year and it was no big loss and he came back better, i want our coach to be able to do that and have "players" that can come in and make the guy work for his spot, currently we have a bunch of average or below players fighting for spots 21-22. when a 10-18 spot player gets injured or suspended an average player who's only worthy of spot 21-22 comes in and we lose a that little bit, 2-5 players who are capable of playing the style of football that gets you picked as a 12-18 best player need to be ready to step up

Just because he's the 3rd best doesn't mean he's of the standard we want, and he does nothing for our immediate need for KPF depth.

I think we're much better off this year getting a mature age ruckman who can start right away if needed, maybe getting a long term project ruckman as a rookie and focus on getting a premium ruck/forward next year when there will be much more attractive choices on offer.

All the good teams have that, think Freo now have Sylvia, Sydney was top 4 even without Goodes and a couple of others, Cats had several injuries but still powered through.

we got absolutely smashed by those good teams, especially in the 2nd half of games, we need more depth and yeah we have some coming through the ranks but you just have to keep adding for sustainability.

Tigers are adding, Gold Coast have it, GWS Have it, Collingwood are re-developing again.

thats exactly right, the point i was making is there (hawks, freo, Sydney, Geelong, ect) depth players are worthy of a position in almost 10-12 other sides, like savage this year would of got a game for all the bottom 8 teams. were as someone like kav might of played 5-10 games if he was lucky but wouldn't of played out a full season. i look forward to see if some of our younger players can make in roads next year and take a step up or even 2-3 steps up. the only way i can see us getting better next year is if 3-4 of the young Mids/half-backs/half-fwds take bigger steps, yes they have improved but its time to take bigger steps not small stutters like josh kennedy does with his set shots. would be rapped if someone maybe kav could play 15 games next year and average 18-22 disposals, would be a huge win. i remember when we drafted him and the talk was that he was top 5 on talent alone and should of gone at worst 8-10. then somehow clubs got wind of the fact he had reoccurring hamstring problems ( a bit like heppell's groin problems maybe ;) ) and slid all the way to 19th, reckon i had a little to much expectation on him after heppell's year though :p

Love your thought process..

Kav slipped because it was a badly torn hammy, he needs to bulk up, hope he can, hope he plays 15-20 games next year, hope Chappy/Jobe & Goddard has positive influence on him.

The improvement from us has to come from Kav, Browne, Edwards, Merrett etc...

But the next wave that needs a year or two in the magoos has to come from this draft, hopefully there is a mid at pick 26 that because of injury or being undersized/oversized (weight) is a little bit of a project player with huge upside.

Good players have dropped, imagine if we nabbed another Zaharakis with 1-2 years needed to develop himself.

Plus he can kick goals. So he can be a back-up ruck or a back-up forward.

My wish list goes Gartlett then Apeness

Garlett won't be picked with 26 according to Bomber

I can't ****ing wait for the draft so people will shut the **** up about Garlett.

But then we'll just hear about Gartlett instead.

Nah, because if we don't take him we'll obviously delist Jetta and take him in the PSD

Will that really work though? We didn't draft him last year and now look at us, 12 month later were covering the same ground.

I'm not sure what's worse, him going undrafted and us pining for him next year or hawthorn taking him and winning another flag

Hawthorn won't win the flag next year IMO

i keep forgetting that this is only his (kav) third pre season, fells like it should be his 4-5. usually about this time (3-4 pre season) with higher picked players that haven't already burst onto the scene you can see a lot of improvement and inroads towards being a decent player. i reckon chappy will make a massive difference with all the young kids, all the older players from geelong were part of the reason all the young kids are so good now. i hope after he finishes up playing there's some kind of coaching role at essendon for him (hopefully forward coach)

I still think we need another quality ball winner that isnt too small.

Behind Dumont, Dunstan who i really like a very unlikely be around for pick 26 i think guys like Tsatis and Templeton are the best bets. Both have excellent running ability and ball amassing numbers and i dont see any flaws in disposal/decision making although nothing elite or amazing about these attributes.

Still wouldnt mind Mitch Harvey but id prefer a midfielder at 26 again. Mitch Harvey not so long ago use to be an over weight real plodder football that could be scratch double figures in a beep test. Hes improved but needs alot more work, real development project type but hes shown some form of hard work in the past year.

For me im not confident on our next era of midfielders our top end is quite nice right now but i think when we start to lose Watson, Stanton, Goddard at their best im not overly confident on Myers being around. Guys like NOB, Ekav, Browne being anywhere near good enough. For me some extra security would be good.

Then i think a decent tall will be available with our next pick. Theres enough of them to see something of similar to ilk of what we would get at 26 at a pick in the low 50's. The same i don't think can be said for those true ball winners.

Apparently Reynolds has like zero endurance. Would even struggle to play half forward with the endurance he has i believe.

Probably better to take a tall with our first pick to be honest. This is a midfielders draft so there will still be quality mids available at pick 55, whereas the quality of talls drops off dramatically after pick 30-35. We're best off using our pick 26 on a tall then a mid/small forward with pick 55.

Disagree totally with that philosophy, if its a midfielders draft then there is potential to grab someone with upside at pick 26, whether that means a zaharakis or Carlisle player that falls through I don't care if its big or small, get someone that may have an impact or us in 2-3 years.

Maybe it's Templeton, Sicily, jkh, apeness, marsh??
