At the end of the year I suspect with the new coach we are going to have a bit of a player clean out. The following players have contracts that expire at the end of the year. I'm interested in people's opinions of who will be 1st, 2nd 3rd out. Rank the top 6 in order of delisting - number 1 is the first to be delisted. This is just for delistings, don't worry about trades. I haven't included Hird - he gets to retire gracefully.

Mark Bolton
Kepler Bradley
Scott Camporeale
Richard Cole
Ricky dyson
Chris Heffernan
Courtney Johns
Mark Johnson
Sam Lonergan
Andrew Lovett
Nathan Lovett-Murray
jay Neagle
Damien Peverill
Adam Ramanauskas
Andrew Welsh

I know this is probably a bit early for something like this but my delisting ranking would look something like this:

1: Cole (first to go!!!!!)
2: Heffernan
3: Bolton
4: Campo
5: Mark Johnson (sorry MJ)
6: Johns

JJ before MJ

Retire/ Delist (no rankings):

James Hird
Mark Bolton
Scott Camporeale
Richard Cole
Chris Heffernan
Mark Johnson
Jason Johnson

Does the new coach have the balls to drop that much senior experience off the list?

If the new coach wants to go fat those will be gone and hopefully Johns as well what a waste of space.

6 or 7 off the list with Rama and Hocking to be promoted.

Leaves us with either 4 from the National draft and 1 from the PSD or 5 from the National draft.

1. Hird (retired)
2. Campo (retire/delisted)
3. Heff (retire/delisted)
4. Cole
5. Lonergan
6. Bolton
7. JJ - sorry mate

I'd be surprised if its any different to tell you the truth.

Would rather keep one of Johns/Bradley then one of MJ/JJ. But otherwise looks alright.

Crikey, why does everybody have it in for bolts?? He is not that bad a footballer, he is a hell of a lot better than Kepler "steady eddie" Bradley and Johns!

Here are my cullings

1. Bradley (off to the cops with you like Hennerman)
2. Johns (same, though maybe west coast could use you)
3. Cole (Ovens and King league for you cole)
4. Campo (getting this oxygen thief is almost a bigger stuff up than Tye Zantuc)
5. Heff (VFL at best)
6. JJ (retirement beckons for you Jason
7. MJ (Sorry MJ but the game has passed guys like you by)

Again, i think bolton is a better footballer than any of the top five on my list. He just doesn’t get a go under Sheedy, same as Ted Richards (could have won the norm smith if Syd got up last year), ditching bolts could bite us on the backside down the track, plus you have to be good to towel up goodes 2 years straight. I would like to see him get one more year under a new coach and given a fair crack at it.

1. Bolton
2. Daylight
..........Hird Retiring
3. Heff
4. Campo
5. JJ
6. MJ

7. Dyson
8. Cole
9. Lonergan
10. Johns
11. Bradley

5 delistings and Hird retiring. Promote Rama and use 5 draft picks.

Lonergan to be placed on the rookie list or if draft is week to be given another year.

Bradley and Johns to be given one more year.

Cole to get another chance. A new coach might be able to get the best out of him. I still think he has the ability to turn it around and I think with the right man management and coach he can succeed.

Agere with Cole but Johns has done nothing at his time at the club

It seems there are 10 names on the possible departures list at the moment.

1. Mark Johnson: Getting dropped doesn't help at this stage. Would only have a chance if the new coach wants some security in his first season.
2. James Hird: Will no doubt retire.
3. Jason Johnson: Has a contract which is in his favour but he's struggling. He loves the club and could well retire in its best interests. On the other hand, a new coach may want him as security for a year.
4. Kepler Bradley: Has had a very bad year. He does have trade value and we may be able to move him on in exchange for a midfielder that's struggling for a game. Sam Butler or Byron Schammer would be my preferences.
5. Scott Camporeale: He doesn't have a contract and he's a short-term rather than long-term prospect. He's only chance is to be kept as security, other than that there is no point keeping him.
6. Courtney Johns: Has a contract and has age on his side. Should be given another year.
7. Mark Bolton: Another to the list of players that could only be kept as emergency options. He's too old not to be in our best 22 and will probably go.
8. Chris Heffernan: See Bolton.
9. Richard Cole: Discipline and form problems for 2 years. I think a new coach would want to clear the slate of players like Cole. The only thing in his favour is that he is younger than a few others and a mass exodus shouldn't be on the cards given the state of the upcomign draft.
10. Sam Lonergan: Another with age on his side but he's only played 1 game in 2 years with a readymade body. Lacks pace in a side that needs pace. Another possible departure.

I can't see us moving on 10 players due to how weak the draft is so I think there's a reasonable chance that a few of the above listed players will be around in 2008 unless we are able to trade some of them.

There also a few others whose names have entered into discussion on this board or are uncontracted.

Ricky Dyson: He has age on his side. Should get a one-year contract in what will be a make-or-break year for him.
Angus Monfries: There have been talks of a trade on this board recently; I think we’ll be seeing him in red and black in 2008.
Adam Ramanauskas: Should be promoted.
Damien Peverill: Should get a one-year deal allowing younger guys a little bit more time to develop.
Andrew Lovett: Should be re-contracted.
Andrew Lee: Has a contract so will be given another year. It will probably a make-or-break year though as he’s going to have to show a lot more.
Jay Neagle: Should be re-signed soon.
Heath Hocking: He won’t be advantaged by a new coach. Knights will have to sing his praises very loudly or he’s going to have to play well in the seniors before year’s end. Odds are against him for a promotion.
Dean Dick: Word of mouth should see him remain on the rookie list.
Danny Chartres: See Dick.
Nathan Lovett-Murray: Should be re-contracted.
Lachlan McKinnon: Chances of promotion are about naught. A new coach who hasn’t seen him probably won’t be interested.

Do we have too much of a leadership gap if we get rid of JJ?

He's a very good off field leader, with so many kids on our list do we need that given we're losing Hird, Heff, Campo, Bolts and probably MJ as well?

Fair point but is it too much to expect some of the younger guys who will have been their 5 - 6 years to step up in that area and fill that void?

No.

I'm not one for off field player leadership. Players should lead by their actions on the field and in training.

Leave the off field stuff to the club. They should have the right development program and coaches in place.

Maybe he can be a given development type role ir he's such a good off field leader?
