Disagree on Rice, from all reports he's seriously impressed this year/preseason. Coaches very bullish and therefore will get 2. IMO
I understand the positivity from Rice.

But he is yet to play a game, he will be lucky to get a multi year deal without actually playing.

Hopefully he gets a chance sometime this year and he can press his chances.

So when did you decide Savage was crap?
Struggling to find consistency in the side as a 26YO is concerning.

Add to that Roberton and Webster are clearly our primary half backs who are both better and younger.

Rice and White also pressing from the VFL doesn't help his cause. If we want to bring in mids especially a Zak Jones or Lachie Whitfield I reckon he'll be tipped out.

I was never sold, but he's just too old to be using it so poorly and in a position that disposal by foot is of the utmost importance. White, Rice, Long, Webster, McKenzie, Robbo, Newnes are capable or projected to be capable of playing that position. They all use it better than him (McKenzie just needs time).

Which is frustrating because he's a beautiful kick but his decision making is poor. Has half a season to turn it around.

Also as he is older his contract would be significant and his ceiling has basically been realised.

This might seem silly but for the rest of this season why don't they try Joey as the forward pocket small? He's still fast , he still reads the play pretty well, he's always been a decent snap at goal, and he would bring some experience around Paddy and Membrey .

In the meantime they can try Lonie and Mitch in the seconds playing as small forwards instead of on the ball . At the moment when they go back to the seconds they are playing as a mid so they are getting no experience playing as a small forward . Small forward is a hard role to have which is why Milne was a superstar . Maybe we were guilty of thinking it was easy because we had Milne playing there for so long .

Anyone else to leave has to be traded, so they have to be wanted by another club.

To put it another way, Minch will be on the list next year.

Not necessarily, because contracts can be paid out if the club thinks players haven't done enough to stay on. It's happened in the past and will happen again in the future. We're miles under the salary cap still so can afford an extra few hundred grand to free up a list spot.

But the fact that some contracted players could/should be paid out is strong evidence that there were some stupid re-signings - Minch, Pierce, and Wright the obvious ones.

I doubted the Pierce signing at the time, and certainly the extra years for Minch and Wright.

Steven is another who should be able to go forward to break a tag. Creating a spot in the team for Joey at the expense of others seems counterproductive.

If anyone finds it interesting as to how our players are independently rated ( and not just stats ). These are our top players based on the SEN Inside Football Ratings.
Average per game // Average over their first 4 games this season // Average per game last season.

1. Ross 7.1//6.3//5.8
2. Roberton 6.9 //6.8//4.9

3. Steven 6.8/ 7/6.8
4. Montagna 6.5/7.0/6.7 ( three games this season are only rated 4 ).
5. Stevens 6.3/NA/5.9
6. Carlisle 6.1/ 5.5/NA

7. Newnes 6.0/6.0/5.9 ( would be the same as Joey, but only scored 1, when he got injured ).
8. Webster 5.8/5.5/5.0 ( as for Newnes, only scored 1 when injured )
8. Riewoldt 5.8/6.8/6.8
9. Billings 5.7/5.0/5.3 ( was much higher but the Bulldogs game did him no favours )
10. Acres 5.7/5.2/5.1
11. Steele 5.7/5.8/4.3

Geary was easily in that group until his shocker against the Bulldogs.

If a player goes forward to break a tag, isn't it good to have a player in the forward line who can rotate into the middle?
Do you see enough of this in the game that its a concern?

Good post. Not too be too negative but how many young players would you back to average 7 + over a season? That is where the problem lies imo. Lot's of potential 5 + 6's, few potential 7 +

Webster , Billings , Acres and Steele are all potential 7's.

Dangerfield is only averaging 6.9 this season.

Acres has scored 7's and 8s, but mostly 5's and 6s
Billings last 5 games this year were 6, 8, 9, 6,4
Steele had an 8 against Carlton
Webster before his injury had 7,7,8,8
Sinclair scored an 8 against GWS.

They just need to get more consistent and they will.

Gresham has not scored better than 6 yet.
Lonie got a 7 against West Coast.
McKenzie's 6 was one of his best , so at least he was trying against the Dogs.
Wright has never got better than 6.
Dunston gets a couple of 7's each year.

And the SEN player rankings are one guy at a game giving everyone a rating out of ten. Probably useful to an extent but completely subjective.

No one outside of the inner sanctum has devised a way to properly and appropriately rate a players performance.

Fair comment.
But at least its independent and we don't have the shit fight we have here ( "how dare you rate Raph Clarke a 2 , did you see how silky smooth that handball was , he's trying real hard and my sister knows his mum so he should be at least a 7 " )

From my side, i think its fairly consistent and i pretty much agree with it, and i find it interesting to know what an outsider thinks of our list.
Far more interesting than the AFL's statistical based ratings.

PS ( if you want a subjective view of our ruck mans performance, you could ask on here or you can go to inside football ).

So you invest 2 years into a talented kid and if he doesn't debut, you cut him?
Seems Ricey is getting very close to a game in the big time.

It will be great to be able to yell out RICEYYY again. Been too long..
