Player Morale

It seems that there has been a leak regarding what Malthouse has said to the Board regarding the list and how he rates players. I would imagine that the playing group knew of Malthouse's views before last Sunday's game. The CEO also suggested that 25% of the list would be moved on again at the end of the year....

To what extent do you think might these two statements go towards explaining what Malthouse called "a totally unforseen low level of performance" against Essendon?

Good thread this one, been lots of strange quotes coming out of PP in the last week. Murphy's "embarrassed to be out there" quote kinda threw me, he's the captain.....and has to accept some responsibility as MM's leader on the field.

Then MM comes out with the "a totally unforseen low level of performance" line, and you wonder his relationships with the players.

I always hear Ken Hinkley makes it a point to talk with EVERY player on the list post game, I'm starting to think MM doesn't work that way, and as a consequence our guys, already introverts, go even further into their shells.

To see the Navy Blue totally capitulate on Sunday, after a 3 quarter effort in Round One, then a half of footy in Round 2, is a real worry, not sure everyone is on the same page at the moment

The players themselves likely know who MM does not like at this point and there would be plenty of established friendships there. You'll find those who argue that at the professional level friendships don't mean anything or that they shouldn't yet those arguments would be met with the other side of the coin claiming, correctly, that you need a united playing group to get the best out of a team.

Comments and rumors like those do not accomplish anything but disenfranchise the playing list. Its massively demotivating.

Why wouldn't those players want to prove the old bastard wrong?

Perhaps because they saw last year that MM had made his mind up on a number of players early? (e.g. Jeremy Laidler didn't get a sniff after round 4)

think that had more to do with Laidler's refusal to buy into Mick's plans. But this is just going to open another can of worms.

Agree with you hence why I worded it as 'perhaps' others will add other delisted players to that list (e.g. not trying our young delisted KPPs)

Of course, the real question in all of this (if the rumour is true) is ... how the **** did this information get out of the board room in the first place? The only possible reason someone couls have for leaking this informaiton is to undermine either Malthouse or the club as a whole.

On the other hand, if the rumour isn't true, then Malthouse and other officials should have been on the front foot to ensure the players that no decisions have been made about any of them and they all have the opportunity this year to prove their worth and continue their careers at Carlton.

Either way, it's just further signs of a lack of professionalism at the club, and until they can pull themselves into line. onfield performances will continue to suffer.

Weasel words. Put up or shut up if you're going to spread rumours.

Any proof?

Standard practice for a side that has finished 9th after the H&A season. 7 seniors, 4 rookies won't be there.

Scotland, Waite and Judd to retire. Club to make a decision between McInnes, White and Bootsma. Club to make a decision on Rowe and Casboult. Always looking to improve our draft position via trading a fringe player.

I'm not sure why you think that's controversial?

May have been some undermining of the position of the club as they were seeking a new president. New president candidate has been told the state of the club and has been told he wont be considered for pres....he then goes and speaks with the players. Loose lips etc etc

If one team starts the game with more intensity usually they'll wear out & the other team will have a period of play go their way. Instead Essendon* played with more intensity all game.
Either they're far fitter and stronger (which is possible), or there's a morale problem.

Drugs....

Why don't they suck it up?

Imagine how they'd be playing if ASADA was waiting around the corner without any lube.

This. :thumbsu:

Our blokes are professional footballers on decent coin and IF this thread has any premise we have a bunch of mentally weak girls running around in our jumper right now. Every year every playing list cops some heat and this has been life at the top level ever since footy began, suck it up stop sulking and play like you are proud to wear the jumper.

We brought Mick in to make the hard calls about the list as Ratten was supposedly to much of a friend to the players and shy to make the hard calls which this very board hung him for, now we have Mick who is making tough calls and calling people out threads like this are made. You cannot have it both ways and the excuses need to stop. I fully support Mick if he calls blokes out saying they are not good enough as he has the runs on the board when identifying who can actually play this game and make us a better team. As bad as Sunday night was we need to be patient and only 5-6 Months ago this team beat a rampaging Tiger outfit in a final and also had to beat Port at AAMI ( who then knocked out the Pies at the G ) to get there in an awesome display. Have faith peoples.

I am not buying anything into the O.P. at all.

I have no idea whether the two statements are responsible in any way for the totally unforseen low level of performance but they certainly shouldn't be.

The list has been treading water for far too long and has virtually nothing to show for itself. The players have little to show for themselves in terms of a winning percentage and have little or no respect from the rest of the competition, the media or the general public.

I can understand Mick's comment in terms of the players giving him no outward indication prior to Sunday night that they weren't up for the fight but the players should hardly be surprised by Swann's comment given the laconic, inconsistent and selfish way they play football.

Perhaps the players thought Mick would be their saviour and that just having him on board sprouting his wisdom would see the team go to the top of the pile without the players actually having to do any extra work for themselves.

The players have footballing talent and have showed it but their minds aren't right.

Our last six games

Essendon, Richmond, Port, Sydney, Richmond, Port

Why have we conceded a early 30 point lead in all of these games?
Do we potentially over exert ourselves in the warmup, and then start the game a little tired? (im not joking)
