How did our players met your expectations in 2017? Who surprised you for better or worse? Why?

Obviously this will differ for everybody depending on how you viewed players going into the season. Further most of us on here including me are clueless with regards to internal goals and factors (fitness, coaching/development strategy...), so I haven't taken these things into account. For example DeGoey not getting a heap of midfield time may have been a club decision.

To keep it simple I chosen to place players into just three categories - exceeded expectations, met expectations and did not met expectations. This is how I seen things. Note it's not a list from best to worst.

(green in the tables equals a career best season)

EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS

4. Brodie Grundy

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|20|166| 202 |368|73|4|5|78| 714
\2017 ave||8.3| 10.1 | 18.4 |3.7|0.2|0.3|3.9| 35.7
\Career ave|82|7.6|8.1|15.7|3.3|0.3|0.3|4.0|26.2
Grundy continued where he left off last season and despite tiring at stages throughout the year his season was exceptional. With a huge 166 more hitouts (9.6 per game) he recorded a career high this season confirming that his ruck craft has gone to another level.

2018 expectations: Greater fitness and an ability to run out the year should come with natural development, so my main hope is for Grundy to further develop his marking and better direct his tap work.

5. Jamie Elliott

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|17|163|76|239|103|34|16|38|
\2017 ave||9.6|4.5|14.1| 6.1 | 2.0 | 0.9 |2.2|
\Career ave|89|9.1|4.3|13.4|5.2|1.6|0.8|3.2|
After a year lost to injury my hope for Elliott in 2017 was simply that he could return to playing good footy. It was certainly a positive that Elliott was able to do this playing 17 games and building his form nicely, which even included more time up the ground as a high half forward.

2018 expectations: With a full season Elliott should be pushing for 40-50 goals and AA honours. I'd also like to see Elliott increase his disposal count to around 20 per game, which could see him influence games in a manner similar to Robbie Gray.

6. Tyson Goldsack

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|20|124| 141 | 265 |72|1|4|49|1
\2017 ave||6.2| 7.1 |13.3|3.6|0.1|0.2|2.5|0.1
\Career ave|161|6.3|5.4|11.7|3.4|0.3|0.2|3.1|0.1
With the departure of Marsh I expected Goldsack to get more game time, however I never would have imagined Goldsack being able to hold down a key defensive spot all year. While he got exposed for height on a couple of occasions he had his most consistent season with some great perfomances. Had career high disposals, but that may also be attributed to our possession based game plan.

2018 expectations: Keep him in the backline please where hopefully he can replicate his 2017, but with some more support.

8. Tom Langdon

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|11|99|111|210|62||1|28|
\2017 ave||9.0| 10.1 |19.1| 5.6 ||0.1|2.5|
\Career ave|57|10.3|8.7|19.0|5.2|0|0.2|2.8|
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|3|
After a year lost to injury I had little expectations for Langdon in 2017. While his disposal can still be questionable at times it was good to see Langdon impacting games in the backend of the season.

2018 expectations: While I'm not sure there's room for all of Langdon, Howe and Scharenberg in the same backline the club seems to differ. As such if fit I'd expect Langdon to play 20+ senior matches, in which case it would be nice to see Langdon lift his disposal count and improve his decision making.
10. Scott Pendlebury

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|16|217|233|450|58|5|7|103|3
\2017 ave||13.6|14.6|28.1|3.6|0.3|0.4| 6.4 |0.2
\Career ave|252|13.3|13.2|26.4|4.3|0.6|0.4|4.9|0.2
Such is Pendlebury's durability this season was the lowest number of games played since his debut season. It was more of the same from our remarkably consistent skipper. Where he exceeded expectations in 2017 was his onfield leadership and I felt he really stepped this up a level with some good moments when needed.

2018 expectations: Hopefully with others stepping up we can utilise Pendlebury's silk more on the outside of the contest.

13. Taylor Adams

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total| 22 | 328 | 321 | 649 | 111 | 9 | 8 | 140 |
\2017 ave||14.9| 14.6 | 29.5 | 5.0 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 6.4 |
\Career ave|97|13.2|11.5|24.7|4.2|0.4|0.3|4.5|
At 23 2017 was a real break out year for Adams, with significant career highs across the board. To give an idea his previous best disposal tally was 494 in 2015. It was also great seeing Adams step up as a leadership especially in the absence of Pendlebury late in the season.

2018 expectations: More of the same, although if I'm being picky he probably needs tidy up his disposal to take his game to the next level.

15. Lynden Dunn

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|17|162|68|230|88|1|1|23|
\2017 ave||9.5|4.0|13.5|5.2|0.1|0.1|1.4|
\Career ave|182|9.5|4.8|14.4|4.5|0.5|0.4|2.5|0.6
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|2|
After spending most of 2016 running around for Casey my expectations for Dunn were low and I only seen him playing games out of necessity. After Schade was preferred early days Dunn certainly made the most of his senior opportunity and showed he was much more than simply a back up/lack of alternative option with good defence and nice kicking.

2018 expectations: Very much looks a heart and soul type of player, so I hope he's able to back up his good form next season.

21. Tom Phillips

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total| 18 | 213 | 167 | 380 | 88 | 9 | 7 | 52 |
\2017 ave|| 11.8 | 9.3 | 21.1 |4.9| 0.5 |0.4| 2.9 |
\Career ave|24|11.2|8.8|20.1|5.0|0.5|0.5|2.9|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|2|3
Break out season for Phillips, which seen him rewarded with a rising star nomination. Shapes as a handy prospect for the future playing between the flanks.

2018 expectations: Start to have more influence on games and improve his positioning and decision making

24. Josh Thomas

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|9|69|79|148|29|6|5|25|
\2017 ave|7.7| 8.8 |16.4|3.2| 0.7 |0.6|2.8|
\Career ave|41|9.5|8.4|17.9|3.1|0.6|0.4|3.4|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|8|6
To be blunt I had him a leading candidate to be delisted at the beginning of the season, a position which was strengthened after the first month. To his credit however Thomas turned his season around with solid VFL form and held his spot after earning a senior recall. At senior level he contributed and played his role well at half forward allowing DeGoey to move into the midfield.

2018 expectations: To build on 2017 and cement his place in our best 22

26. Josh Daicos

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|2|10|12|22|4|1|1|12|
\2017 ave|5.0|6.0|11.0|2.0|0.5|0.5|6.0|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|15|9
With a lower draft position and no opposition club bid I expected less from Daicos than Brown as a player. Daicos showed good early season form in the twos, before a quiet patch and later move onto a wing and into the midfield as the year progressed. He showed that he is a silky player with class and poise. Got a taste of AFL footy late where he showed enough to suggest he won't be out of his depth.

2018 expectations: 10-15 senior matches would be a fantastic result and I'd expect more impact at senior level with more games

27. Kayle Kirby

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|1|3|1|4|20|1|5|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|17|43
A speculative draft selection, who while talented had fitness concerns and I wasn't expecting Kirby to impact VFL games consistently if at all. Kirby showed however that he knew where the goals were kicking it at least one major in all 17 VFL games played. A tally of 43 goals being our second best haul in the current VFL era was most impressive. He also showed a balanced game with strong hands, good aerial and crumbing ability and a defensive work rate that will only improve with greater fitness. That he got a taste of senior footy late is a testament to the hard work and application Kirby put into his footy in 2017.

2018 expectations: Ending the season Kirby is less senior ready than Daicos and Brown and I think 5-10 AFL games next year would be a terrific effort.

32. Will Hoskin-Elliott

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total| 22 | 246 | 159 | 405 | 143 |18|6| 70 |
\2017 ave| 11.2 | 7.2 | 18.4 | 6.5 |0.8|0.3| 3.2 |
\Career ave|74|9.1|4.6|13.7|4.9|0.8|0.6|2.4|
Was promising at GWS without being outstanding and I wasn't sure how he'd fit into our side. Hoskin-Elliott's pace and leap was a welcome addition. What surprised me was he ability to play midfield, run and also chase. While Hoskin-Elliott since has a way to go we've lacked that outside gut runner in the mould of Thomas and Wellingham for some time.

2018 expectations: Greater consistency should see Hoskin-Elliott develop his game further. Additional core maybe required to help stick tackles, but that could apply across the list.

34. Mitch McCarthy

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|5|1
Didn't get to see much of McCarthy in 2017 as his year was cut short by injury, but in the few games played he showed great athleticism as an extremely raw prospect.

2018 expectations: He's the type of project player the rookie list was originally designed for, hopefully we give him another year. If retained the hope would be that he starts ascertaining himself on the VFL competition.

37. Brayden Maynard

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total| 22 | 256 | 126 | 382 | 91 | 6 |4| 72 |
\2017 ave| 11.6 | 5.7 | 17.4 |4.1| 0.3 |0.2|3.3|
\Career ave|51|10.7|5.3|16.0|4.0|0.2|0.2|3.4|
A good season from a developing player. I'm liking what he brings to our side more and more as he gains experience. It was good seeing him get time in the middle and do well there against Melbourne too.

2018 expectations: Eliminate or at least further minimise his mistakes along with more midfield minutes.

38. Jeremy Howe

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|21| 294 | 164 | 458 | 181 |3|2|33|
\2017 ave| 14.0 | 7.8 | 21.8 | 8.6 |0.1|0.1|1.6|
\Career ave|141|10.6|5.9|16.5|6.2|0.6|0.5|2.2|0.3
Outstanding season, where he built on a good 2016. Repeatedly stood up and will come close to winning the Copeland. Strong leadership was recognised with promotion to the official group mid year.

2018 expectations: More of the same and I'm sure the pre-season will be spent learning how to break a tag.

45. Max Lynch

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|17|5
Lynch missed just two of our VFL games this year and although he struggled to make an impact at VFL level. He showed enough in patches, particularly in a couple of games though to suggest he potentially has a future. For a late rookie selection that's not bad outcome.

2018 expectations: Like McCarthy club's shouldn't recruit these project talls only to delist them after one season. If retained the hope would be that he starts ascertaining himself on the VFL competition.

MET EXPECTATIONS

1. Alex Fasolo

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|19|169|87|256|105| 29 | 29 |38|
\2017 ave||8.9|4.6|13.5| 5.5| 1.5| 1.5 |2.0|
\Career ave|100|8.6|5.3|14.0|4.5|1.3|0.9|2.5|
As documented had his battles this year, which did effect his confidence and accuracy kicking for goal. He still contributed in the majority of games and I thought he was much improved after returning from his break.

2018 expectations: Fasolo seems to have plateaued at 13-15 touches and 4-5 marks per game, which are solid numbers for a small forward. A return to his accurate goal kicking ways and a tally of 35-45 goals should see Fasolo take the next step.

3. Daniel Wells

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|10|101|84|185|47|11|5|22|
\2017 ave||10.1|8.4|18.5| 4.7 | 1.1 |0.5|2.2|
\Career ave|253|11.8|7.6|19.4|3.9|0.6|0.5|2.6|0.4
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|1|
Wells is one who could fit into both the top and bottom categories, so I've placed him in the middle. His fitness on arrival to the club were below expectations and subsequent injuries throughout the year were disappointing. That said his performances when on the park were exceptional and there's no doubt I underrated his talent at North. His leadership is also an asset with several young players talking up his mentoring.

2018 expectations: Returning to the club after the break in better nick and 15+ AFL games.

9. Jesse White

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|4|34|16|50|19|5|5|6|11
\2017 ave||8.5|4.0|12.5|4.8|1.3| 1.3 |1.5|2.8
\Career ave|127|6.4|3.9|10.3|4.0|1.2|0.8|1.8|4.3
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|15|16
No doubt it would have been a disappointing year for White, but he actually played pretty good footy early and was arguably our best forward when dropped. Unfortunately we were struggling at that time and he found himself a victim of team structure and an understandable desire to develop Moore.

2018 expectations: I wish White well in his future endeavours.

11. Jarryd Blair

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|12|50|94|144|21|11|7|49|
\2017 ave||4.2|7.8|12.0|1.8|0.9|0.6|4.1|
\Career ave|155|7.1|8.9|16.0|2.6|0.8|0.5|4.7|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|9|7
Blair cops more than his fair share of flack amongst CFC fans; his endeavour can't be faulted and ultimately he doesn't pick the 22. After being one of the last to be re-signed in 2016 it was apparent Blair would see less time in the seniors this season, which proved to be the case. Like Pendlebury he played the lowest number of matches since his debut year. Had his moments, with highlights including 3 goals against NM and a great last quarter goal in our draw with Adelaide.

2018 expectations: Just 12 senior games at the age of 27 doesn't bode well for the future, if he does go around again I'd expect more of the same (up to a dozen games at his usual output).

12. Matthew Scharenberg

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|10|125|77|202|75|||9|
\2017 ave||12.5|7.7|20.2|7.5|||0.9|
\Career ave|14|11.3|7.4|18.7|6.6|||1.0|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|8|1
After injury wiped out his 2016 I was hoping Scharenberg could work his way into the seniors and while I would have liked to see him play a few more matches it was great seeing Scharenberg start to display solid form in the AFL as the year progressed.

2018 expectations: That Scharenberg establishes himself in our best 22 consistently impacting games. I also wouldn't mind seeing him get some time forward.

17. Callum Brown

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|5|18|50|68|11|1|1|11|
\2017 ave||3.6|10.0|13.6|2.2|0.2|0.2|2.2|
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|11|3
Not being a watcher of junior footy I didn't have any expectations of Brown entering 2017. Having watched him this year he appears to be a tough inside extractor who at this stage of his career predominately handballs the footy out. Had two small stints in the seniors this season and it was pleasing to see him impact games more during the second of these.

2018 expectations: 10-15 senior games would be a great outcome and I'd also hope he starts kicking the footy more.

19. Levi Greenwood

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|16|143|107|250|73|7| 18 |51|
\2017 ave||8.9|6.7|15.6|4.6|0.4| 1.1 |3.2|
\Career ave|14|11.3|7.4|18.7|6.6|||1.0|
Still hasn't got close to his final year at the roos, which is looking more and more like an outlier, but it was good seeing us utilise Greenwood forward more often this season. As a forward he provided good a target and pressure. Unfortunately like Fasolo he lost his accuracy in front of goal.

2018 expectations: Another year similar to this one, but hopefully with his goal/behinds tally reversed.

22. Steele Sidebottom

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|22|344|256|600|115|16|9|93|
\2017 ave||15.6|11.6| 27.3 |5.2|0.7|0.4|4.2|
\Career ave|185|13.7|9.9|23.6|5.1|0.8|0.5|4.0|0
A slightly improved season in comparison to 2016, albeit he was a little inconsistent across the season. He's consistently averaged 24-27 touches per game since 2012, which suggests this is his level.

2018 expectations: More time forward with 20-25 goals

23. Lachlan Keeffe

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|19|15
I'd like to say Keeffe exceeded expectations, because that would have meant he played the majority of the year in defence, but alas the club had other ideas. Keeffe presented admirably as a forward in the twos and developed this aspect as the year progressed, however he simply lacks the natural instincts of a forward. Only magpie to play every VFL match.

2018 expectations: Given our lack of height I can see Keeffe being retained in 2018, although it wouldn't surprise me if he was delisted. If Keeffe does remain on our list in 2018 he needs to play back.

35. Sam McLarty

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|14|2
Others certainly rate his potential higher than me, for mine I have doubts around his pace and how this will translate to modern footy. That said he had a terrific VFL final with strong intercept marks, so there's something to work with.

2018 expectations: At a minimum a taste of senior footy, perhaps 5 games should be the objective for 2018.

DID NOT MET EXPECTATIONS

2. Jordan DeGoey

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|14|139|126|265|60|14|8|38|1
\2017 ave|| 9.9 | 9.0 | 18.9 | 4.3 | 1.0 |0.6|3.4| 0.1
\Career ave|50|9.0|8.1|17.0|3.4|0.7|0.5|3.9|0
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|3|6

My expectations were that DeGoey would spend more time in the middle this season, however this didn't happen until the last month. Once released into the midfield DeGoey showed he was more than capable and combined with greater freedom drifting forward he actually turned matches such was his impact.

2018 expectations: Consistently getting large midfield minutes and pushing for AA honours.

7. Adam Treloar

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|21|275|353|628|54|13|11|134|1
\2017 ave|| 13.1 |16.8|29.9|2.6|0.6|0.5| 6.4 |0.0
\Career ave|122|12.6|4.4|27.0|3.7|0.6|0.5|5.0|0.1

Perhaps a bit harsh in my assessment, but I was hoping Treloar would best his 2016 and take his game to the next level. In reflection there wasn't much difference between his last two seasons, however perhaps owing to injury niggles I don't feel Treloar was as consistent in 2017.

2018 expectations: Stepping up to become one of the premier mids in the competition

14. James Aish

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|8|69|56|125|29|1|2|24|
\2017 ave||8.6|7.0|15.6|3.6|0.1|0.3|3.0|
\Career ave|55|8.5|7.7|16.2|3.4|0.3|0.2|3.1|
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|10|2
Unfortunately Aish regressed in 2017 instead of continuing where he left off 2016 and we're still none the wiser on where his best position is. At times looks his best as an inside mid in the VFL, at other times it's at half back. Is strong overhead for his size, but needs to put together some consistent form.

2018 expectations: In the final year of his contract 2018 will be a make or break year for Aish and he really needs to establish himself in our best 22.

16. Chris Mayne

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|3|19|17|36|9|2|2|14|
\2017 ave||6.3|5.7|12.0|3.0|0.7|0.7|4.7|
\Career ave|175|6.3|7.3|13.6|4.7|1.1|0.6|4.1|0.1
|GM|G
\VFL 2017|18|20
I struggled to see what Mayne would bring to the table that Greenwood and Blair wouldn't as defensive forwards, however a club doesn't sign a player for 4 years to play just 3 AFL games for the season and I'm sure the club would have expected 15+ games from Mayne. Unfortunately for Mayne he quickly found himself outside of the 22 and his VFL form didn't demand a senior recall.

2018 expectations: While Mayne played his best game in black and white in yesterday's VFL final and I finally seen why we brought him across (desperation, high marking...) I wonder if there was a sense of finality in his performance. One last effort type of thing. Should Mayne and the club continue their relationship beyond 2017 I hope yesterday's game is a start of a turn around for him.

18. Travis Varcoe

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|8|49|60|109|25|2|1|19|
\2017 ave||6.1|7.5|13.6|3.1|0.3|0.1|2.4|
\Career ave|185|6.7|7.5|14.1|3.0|0.8|0.5|3.6|
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|1|
Disappointingly his season was largely wiped out by injury.

2018 expectations: Provides a much needed point of difference, so hopefully can get on the park for 15+ games in 2018.

20. Ben Reid

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|15|155|53|208|94|14| 13 |18| 5
\2017 ave||10.3|3.5|13.9|6.3|0.9| 0.9 |1.2|0.3
\Career ave|136|9.4|4.9|14.3|6.0|0.4|0.3|1.2|0.1
|GM|G
\2017 VFL|1|1
Really don't know what to make of Reid's 2017, which included being dropped early on and a switch forward. That Dunn and Goldsack were preferred as defenders probably says a bit about where Reid's career is at.

2018 expectations: Sadly it looks like injury has left Reid a fragile shadow of himself as a player and it's fair to say he's now in the twilight of his career. As such my expectations for 2018 will be significantly lower and I hope he is able to contribute 30 goals taking pressure of Moore as a forward.

25. Jack Crisp

While Crisp has now put together three consistent seasons with us I was hoping he'd take the next step in 2017. After a slow start to the season a move to half back proved beneficial to player and club with his run and carry important. A career high 122 marks (previous best 85) is evident of Crisp being used more as an outlet during our numerous switches across the ground.

2018 expectations: A year at half back and a more consistent season

28. Ben Sinclair

For the fourth year running Sinclair's season was decimated by injury; worse he wasn't even able to get onto the field this year.

2018 expectations: At 25 he still has time on his side and his pace and run and carry is a nice point of difference. It would be great seeing him get a decent crack it at in 2018, however sadly without a contract for 2018 player or club may decide his body won't stand up to AFL footy.

25. Tim Broomhead

For player of his talent and class I really hoped this would be the year Broomhead broke out and established himself in the 22. Despite three stints in the seniors he was unable to do so, albeit he played well in patches.

2018 expectations: Hopefully the club retains Broomhead for 2018 and he's able to produce consistent solid footy at senior level next season.

30. Darcy Moore

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO

His first month and a half was poor and he should have been dropped on form, it is for this reason I've marked him low. Understandably the club continued developing him in seniors and to his credit Moore was able to turn his form around being given time as our second ruck. To put things into perspective he kicked one less goal in 2016 from four fewer games.

2018 expectations: Moore is a supreme talent in need of support in the forward line. With this support and the freedom to roam up the ground there's no reason he can't put together consistently good form across the full year. Baring lengthy stints in the defence 35 to 45 goals should be the expectation.

31. Jackson Ramsay

After two injury interrupted seasons Ramsay was finally able to get back on the park with regularity in 2017. Unfortunately he struggled to hold his spot in the senior 22 and made just the two appearances after round 7. In the VFL Ramsay found quite a bit of footy running off half back, however at times struggled defensively.

2018 expectations: 17 games in four seasons doesn't bode well for player out of contract at year's end. We do however lack a small defender, so there might be a remote chance he gains a 1 year contract extension.

33. Rupert Wills

Another who had his year ruined by injury. As a mature age recruit after 6 games at the end 2016 I expected Wills to play 15 games and potentially establish himself in the senior side. We definitely lacked a big body on the inside and Wills could have filled that void.

2018 expectations: Unfortunately for Wills arguably two of his three years at the club (he wasVFL listed in 2015) have been disrupted by injury. Reported to have signed on for another 2 years, so hopefully he gets a fair run at showing what he's capable of.

36. Brayden Sier

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|10|3
Again struggled to get consistent run in the VFL as injury interrupted his season. As a project player I was hopeful that he'd at least show signs of making it if not a Goodyear like breakout year in the VFL. Terrific size for a midfielder, but questions still remain on whether he's got the talent and ability to win enough footy.

2018 expectations: Personally I'd retain him for 2018 on the senior list, however I'm 50/50 on whether the club shares this view. Might be nothing in it, but Goodyear was delisted after missing last year's VFL final. Should he remain at Collingwood good solid VFL footy should be the aim.

Even when played Crocker looked to be battling injury with his pace and agility down.

2018 expectations: Another with questions around their future, how deep we cut and who else departs may dictate his 2018 list spot. Would want to play 12-15 AFL matches if retained.

40. Josh Smith

A disappointing year for Smith after a strong debut season in 2016. Struggled particularly defensively at both levels, but won plenty of footy at VFL level where he generally used it well.

2018 expectations: Out of contract, but I'd like to see him retained with a view to moving him up the ground away from our back 6.

41. Henry Schade

Started the season surprisingly strongly, even if I didn't rate his effort on Franklin as much as others. His downward spiral however was disappointing. How he could slip from good displays in the seniors to at times not looking like a VFL level player over the space of a few months is unknown.

2018 expectations: I expect Schade will get delisted

43. Adam Oxley

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|2|
Injury wiped out most of his season for the second year running, but he looked a long way off in the few games he did play.

2018 expectations: A contract for 2018 might be the only thing the saves his list spot. Should he hold on at 25 years old he'd need to play 15+ senior games in 2018 to earn a further extension. At his best he's a good kick and uncontested mark, but others may have passed him.

44. Liam Mackie

|GM|G
\VFL 2017|12|1
Coming from the SANFL as a running half back I thought Mackie maybe capable of a Smith like debut year, even if he didn't manage as many senior games. Instead he struggled to provide much at VFL level.

2018 expectations: I expect Mackie will get delisted

46. Mason Cox

Like Reid and Moore this is more a result of me having misplaced expectations. After 17 goals in 2016 I thought coming into the year Cox would play 15+ games, providing good support to Moore with 20-30 goals. Unfortunately we struggled to find a balanced forward line meaning Cox spent the majority of the year in the twos. In the VFL Cox stepped up filling the void left by Witts to become a dominant ruck. He was also able to push forward with success with Cox's marking developing well as the year progressed. Especially promising was an increase in strong contested marks.

2018 expectations: A late senior recall and good performances should give Cox confidence going into 2018 whether it's with us or elsewhere. Should Cox re-sign with Collingwood hopefully the Melbourne game serves a template to a successful Grundy/Cox partnership.

Don't agree Crisp did not meet expectations. Had a great year in my opinion.

But overall a great summary.
I agree that Crisp had a good year, I just think he's capable of more and my concern is whether 21 touches per game is enough for a half back/mid. He had 7 games over 25 touches including one of 33 disposals, which suggests a higher output is possible. Conversely he had 12 games where he recorded below 20 disposals with a low of 15. Perhaps I'm placing too much emphasis on stats, but I feel he struggled a bit early on and I'd like to see him bump a lot of those 15-20 possession games up to 20-25.

He should do what GAJ does and do the one-two handball thing. Instantly doubles your unnecessary stats!

MET EXPECTATIONS

1. Alex Fasolo

|GM|K|HB|D|M|G|B|T|HO
\2017 total|19|169|87|256|105| 29 | 29 |38|
\2017 ave||8.9|4.6|13.5| 5.5| 1.5| 1.5 |2.0|

9. Jesse White

\2017 total|10|125|77|202|75|||9|

\Career ave|14|11.3|7.4|18.7|6.6|||1.0|

Struggling to understand why McLarty's pace would be an issue. From what I've seen he's above average for his size. Certainly doesn't seem to get burned by his opponent as a general rule.

I think it's deceiving because he's such a lump of a lad with an unusual gait. Haven't seen enough of him, looks like he has a decent top speed. Any idea on his speed off the mark?

Too kind to Scharenberg, Daicos, McCarthy, White, Fasolo, Keeffe and Lynch. Too harsh on DeGoey, Crisp, Moore and Cox. But I loved all your stats and the fact that you have the testicular fortitude to state your opinions of players on this forum, where there are posters poised with bayonets fixed for the slightest hint of vulnerability or a questionable player assessment. It was a good read and I thank you for it. :):rainbow:

Decent to my eye. He's no Jonathan Marsh, but not many KPP size players are.

Howe great, Grundy, Moore, Maynard, De Goey improving and giving us a glimmer of hope.
The Sack a career best year out of the blue.

The rest either the same or worse.

The end.

Anyone see any of the two rookie Gorillas we picked up last year? Lynch and McCarthy?

Both extremely raw but both showed enough to suggest well worth another year on the rookie list.

33. Rupert Wills

Another who had his year ruined by injury. As a mature age recruit after 6 games at the end 2016 I expected Wills to play 15 games and potentially establish himself in the senior side. We definitely lacked a big body on the inside and Wills could have filled that void.

2018 expectations: Unfortunately for Wills all three of his years at the club (1 VFL list, 2 AFL list) have been decimated by injury. Out of contract at year's end I hope the club re-signs him for 2018 and he gets a fair run at showing what he's capable of.

Couple of points. Not sure he was ever VFL listed. Played as a 23rd player in 2015 while still listed with the Murray Bushrangers hence the reduced number of appearances, not injury. Played all bar 3 games (calf injury) in 2016 so "decimated" might be a tad strong.

Normally allocated a specific opponent so I think his possessions can fluctuate of that. Happy for him to be getting in that 15-20 possessions if he's dealing with his opponent. Can't recall him actually being bested, particularly after moving to HBF.
