Anderson
In the running for a defencive role this year, going to have to be very good to get in our best 22.

Armfield
His run and pace is fantastic and Craig Bradley like. His problem was disposal but his kicking looks excellent this year. Looks muck improved and will probably get a game. Hasn't played a lot of footy so his effort is really good.

Austin
Can get the footy and is a great kick but isn't all that strong yet and might struggle to get a game this year. Might be handy playing on opponents smaller/shorter than him as I think he can and it's always good to have defenders taller than opponents.

Bentick
Last year was too slow and his kicking was far from good enough and I doubt much has changed. Would have been a good player 10 or so years ago but now wastes too many possessions which is not acceptable any more, especially as a midfielder.

Betts
His goal kicking in the nab cup has been ordinary and needs improving. He must keep his work rate up and continue to get to as many contests in the forward line and chase hard. He should be a valuable player in our forward line this season.

Bower
looks like a good prospect, unfortunately it looks like he hasn't put on a lot of weight and strength over the summer although he no doubt has improved here. He should be a very valuable player for us and it would be good to see him given some big jobs this year.

Browne
More footballer than athlete, he looks fitter this year as expected. Strong for a young player and his all round skills are good. Lacks a little pace but he's still a very good player and a good chance to play in our best side.

Carrazzo
Unlucky to get injured, is always one of our fittest and hardest working players. Will be great to have him back and fit. His long kicking was a bit dodgy last year but his short kicking was pretty good. He's a real ball magnet that opposition players just can't keep up with.

Cloke
Is a little rusty with his contested marking but further match fitness will improve this. His kicking looks good but his high ball drop might suffer if he cops some windy conditions. Should have a good year playing as a forward and no doubt will improve.

Fevola
looks great, bigger and looks to have a little more endurance which is crucial for his chasing. He will lose weight during the season and only get better.

Fisher
Looks to have changed his kicking style and looks a little more balanced, stable and improved. He needs to still get better if he is to make our best 22. He doesn't have great balance which might be a problem.

Gibbs
Looks to have done everything right and should have a great year. His hardness at the ball will determine how good of a season he has. Will probably be a similar player to Nathan Buckley.

Hadley
Great disposal and plenty of strength. Stands up in tackles really well. Is looking like there might be a spot for him in our best 22. Might lack a bit of pace but he's not slow. will get better as his endurance improves.

Hampson
Amazing how much he looks like Richo from from the side, especially when he's puffing. His speed and agility is amazing. He seems to get in the right position a lot which is good but his hands arent very good. He again dropped a lot of marks he should have taken. Unfortunately there aren't many players of his size and mobility that have good hands. Richo and Buddy are the ones that do.
If hampson can improve his marking he could be one of the AFL's best forwards and be nearly unstoppable. I think he can but he's not ready yet.
To me it looks like he is not getting his thumbs behind the ball and not spreading his fingers out fully. He is getting his palms behind the ball instead of his thumbs which is why the ball often falls out of the front hands.
I would love to see him play full forward in the VFL and see him develop into a forward and work on his marking rather than doing a lot of rucking.

Houlihan
I originally bagged him saying he was too slow and couldn't tackle but that was before we knew about his hip problems. Now that is fixed and he's had a full pre season I'm definitely willing to give him another chance. Hope his tackling and speed has improved as he uses the ball well and could be a real weapon for us. His tackling and speed look better but they will never be great.

Jamison
Had a pretty average game against North and a shocker against the Hawks. He struggled to read the ball in the air and did some silly things but he had a good game against Geelong and it's all probably match fitness. His spoiling and kicking are his strength. He looks stronger this year but unfortunately he's going to struggle for height in a lot of situations. Going to need to have a good leap.

Johnson
Looks ok, Kicking is generally really good apart from a few clangers. He looks like he can play and probably will make our best 22.

Judd
Looks really good and hopefully will have a good year for us. Will probably get a fair bit of attention which will work in the favour of Gibbs, Walker and Murphy.

Kreuzer
His rucking and fitness look much improved. Hes quite quick for his size and hopefully will be a valuable player for us this year. Will hopefully get a go as 3rd tall forward this year a bit.

Murphy
looked disinterested during the nab cup but that's ok as it doesn't mean a lot and many players struggle for motivation. His intensity will probably lift and he'll have the great season we all expect of him. His kicking looks improved and looks like he's worked on his balance. Needs to work on his overhead marking.

O'hAilpin
A real shame he was reported. Will probably play as a defender this year which is good as we do need a really tall defender. He's tall, strong, fast and agile which are rare qualities in any individual. He looked good last year just before he was injured, he was beginning to read the play, provide run out of the backline and his kicking is excellent. His spoiling was ordinary but he had improved that and was beginning to look good. I personally can't wait to get a look at him and see how he goes in a good Carlton side.

Robinson
looks good, amazing we got him at 40, has the right attitude and strikes me as a player that will give himself no other option but to make it. His speed, disposal and attack on the ball are great. As a first year player and tough player he will probably suffer from soreness a lot this year which will mean his form will be up and down but he's an exciting future prospect. With a few more kilo's on him he'll be dangerous!

Russell
When given an attacking role against Geelong he stood up and showed why he has been persisted with. His speed, strength and tackling are good. His kicking isn't great and his handball is very ordinary. His agility (turning) is questionable. he might make it but he's just not a natural footballer and he still struggles to read his opponent's actions. They take years to get there unfortunately.

Scotland
His fitness has always been his strength but having OP might have ruined this year for him. While he might play this year he might be well below par as its ruined his preseason and he might carry some OP still.

Simpson
Has shone in the preseason and his kicking has improved although his goal kicking is no good which is a shame as he would be one of the AFL's best if he kicked those goals. This might keep him restrained to the back half.

Stevens
Played at half back and should have a good season. Has had a full pre season and should be firing when he starts in round 2. Looks fitter and quicker this year.

Thonton
Will play a similar role to Luke Hodge, one of the best marks in the team, if hampson could only have hands like his and take contested marks like him. Had an injury last year which appeared to affect him for the second half of the year.

Waite
Kicking has improved every year and looks pretty spot on although he is not suited to playing on real big forwards. Anyone taller than him worries him. He needs to work on his tackling, especially front on tackling and get lower and bend his knees and hips more.

Walker
He's one of the fittest at the club. At the end of 2006 he had become our best on baller and had a fairly good but stunted 2007 where he was injured when he was coming into his prime at the start of 2008. Could be a very similar player to Judd and will really be valuable for us in '09 with his skill, pace, leap, strength, endurance and smarts. A player who can play anywhere and be a match winner. Will really complete our side. Early in his career his kicking wasn't good but recently he looks to have resolved this problem

Warnock
Will improve our onballers and clearances. Will improve how the opposition kick the ball into our backline from clearances if he can win a lot of hitouts.

Wiggins
Speed, agility and kicking can be an issue for him but he's a good mark and he can kick goals.

Yarran
Will benefit from Playing with our crucial ball winners, haven't seen much of him yet but he will be a good player for us in the future. This year might be his settling in year.

Bently
Good back up player, lacks a bit of speed, ball handling and his disposal isn't great. He's a good body size and he reads the game pretty well.

Ellard
Going to be another development year for him and will have to play some good VFL footy.

Garlett
Very smart, skilled, quick player who, like Simpson will be a project player. Needs to build up his body size and strength but looks like a future star. Will need a few pre seasons under him before he is a regular player I think.

Jacobs
Improved every game and seemed to get more confident. Not all that quick or mobile but he's a good ruckman and he's taken some nice marks. His handballing is textbook.

Joseph
Should be a part of our main 11. Couldn't have got more out of the preseason. Played on Harvey, Rioli and Abblett and did a really good job. Has a big strong body and is not afraid to use it. His skills are pretty good and he's one of those rare types that have a big body and can still run really fast. Finally we have an option to play on the likes of Milne, Lovett, Lovett-Murray, Rioli, Harvey and Stokes. I can see him taking Cousins in round 1.

Browne
More footballer than athlete, he looks fitter this year as expected. Strong for a young player and his all round skills are good. Lacks a little pace but he's still a very good player and a good chance to play in our best side.

Good review gbatman, but disagree about Browne lacking pace. Isn't he supposed to be fastest at the club (?) and looked real quick on Saturday night when chasing. Going to be a very very good player young Browne.

GREAT STUFF!
I couldn't ask for me being in the US and this was perfect
thanks a billion bud

just been tested at club clocking 2.82 sec for 20 metere sprint cant be lacking in pace

ok I didn't know that, he doesn't appear all that quick in games but that can be deceptive. Some players take a while before they become good at using their pace. Also they need a very high level of endurance so the pace is avaliable to them during the game. Either way he's a credit to our recruiters and he's a great talent and a genuine "footballer".

Joseph

Great job so I dont wish to be super critical but I am not sure you could describe Joseph as big bodied. The club has him listed as 180cm 76kg. If he were part of our senior list there would only be 2 players lighter than him on the list, Eddie is listed at 74kg (and looks like he could actually be heavier) but he is 7cm shorter and Browne is listed at 180cm and 75kgs and Browne looks a little light on for mine.

I must admit I hadnt given much thought to Aaron Josephs size and prior to the Geelong game I had not seen much of him, but I was mighty impressed with his harrassing work on G Ablett, and his pace worried Ablett at times with Joseph catching him many times. Abletts class was not enough to evade Joseph and many times he had to move the ball on sooner than he seemed to want to. So as impressive as Joseph was I am still not sure he could be described as big bodied. I would have let it slide but you mentioned it twice so I wondered if I was missing something?

Garlett

Agree with the most of what you wrote, but I think you exaggerate Simpson's shortfalls just a little. Could definitely work on his goal kicking and perhaps his kicking off his non preferred but by no means is he a project player. Firm spot in the 18 for mine...

Well 30yearBLUE. Joseph looks pretty solid to me. I would take the weights and heights with a grain of salt. Do you think that Carlton really want opposition knowing exactly how tall/heavy their players are... I recon that might be an old weight as I think he's put on kilo's recently. To me Joseph looks about 80KG. He didn't look little when he put Roughead down and "made him earn one".
Brown is a little light but he's not skinny and he seems fairly strong. I recon he has good strength around the legs and hips that will develope as time comes. I am sure the Adelaide player he ran through last year though he felt big.

As for your question The_JUDDERNAUT, I don't see Jamison competing with O'hAilpin. Any forward over 194cm would be best suited to O'hAilpin. If there are no forwards that tall then O'hAilpin would be best suited to which ever tall is playing up the ground perhaps, unless the opposition are playing a stationary tall forward deep. Jamison is best played on forwards leading from the goal square where as Setanta is suited to more stationary forwards or ones that play up the ground in more of a traditional CHF role.

Big name opponents for Jamison would be Lloyd, Johnson, Bradshaw.
Big name opponents for O'hAilpin would be Richo, Hale, Riewoldt, Franklin, Koschitzke.

Having Setanta and Jamison will free up Waite and Thornton, and we have seen how dangerous they are when they have smaller/less skilled opponents at intercepting the ball and rebounding out of defence.

Dima, you misunderstood. Simpson was a project player. Garlett will be a project player. Remember Simmo started as a really skinny kid who nearly didn't get picked cos he was so light, didn't get a posession in his first 2 games but developed into a star...

Fair enough, I admit to not taking a lot of notice of him before so I am not going to argue with your assessment. I am not sure that the clubs write the stats, there are stats on players as they get drafted which are public knowledge posted for fans of all clubs before the players are selected. What I dont know is whether the clubs update them, and given that Joseph has been rookie listed a while they may be pre draft stats.

Further to your comments re Carlos, I disagree he could take the likes of Buddy, Richo or Riewoldt, but agree he could stand Hale or Kozi (or Hall) for the following reasons. Whilst Carlos is a superb athlete I dont think he can play a run with role required to blanket Richo, Waite on the other hand would be perfect for this role.

I also dont think that Carlos has the footy smarts that come from years and years in the game to play on "smart" players like Buddy or Riewoldt who use their knowledge of the game to outsmart oponents and find the ball on their own or on mismatches having lost thier direct opponent. Carlos, although picking up the nuances of the game fast just doesnt have the bank of knowledge required to beat players of this type, he just hasnt been in the game long enough to collect them.

But when playing on players that rely on their physique such as Kozi or Hale or Hall he is more than a match for them often beating them for size, strength and speed. If they play a static man on man marking contest in the square Carlos has the physical strength (and mental will power) to hold his own if they play a lead up type game, Carlos has the speed to go with them and provide the spoil and if they play the fly from behind then Carlos can also fly and spoil and so can Jamo or Thornton to provide the chop out.

So Carlos in my oppinion will be picked on the opponent but not an automatic selection each week regardless of the opponent. Just my take FWIW.

Sorry to post on an oppositions board but i found this bit interesting. I know exactly where you are coming from with this point and agree with what you are saying.
However i see Satanta as a major project player. He has a lot of speed, agility, height, strength and desire (almost everything i see in Tom Williams for us). Speed and agility are the main two things you need to run with Franklin and put pressure on him. If you can't read where he is going to run then all the speed in the world will not help, but Satanta is a project player and it will come with time.
All you can do is hope Satanta gets as much chances as he can (Williams hasn't due to injuries) and when the choaches don't think he's worth the gamble anymore, they cut ties.
Goodluck for 2009.

Good write up, I would hardly call joseph big bodied. He still has a developing body. If he keeps with the weights he will no doubt get bigger but at the moment he is a boy man. He does have pace to burn however.

Good review gbatman, but disagree about Browne lacking pace. Isn't he supposed to be fastest at the club (?) and looked real quick on Saturday night when chasing. Going to be a very very good player young Browne.

Armfield is the fastest at the club, however yeah Browne isnt that slow, he isnt the fastest but not slow either.

I'll be honest when I say I didnt read the entire post but from what i did read of certain players ala yarran, robinson, betts i reckon your on the mark. Honestly I see Betts kicking less goals this year in replace of yarran and garlett but be much more of a goal assist player.

Yeah I am not convinced with Waite on really big oppenents, he doesn't have the strenght to go with the top big blokes like Setanta does. Setanta developed a lot mentally last year I thought. Considering our poor pressure due to bad rucking and a few ordinary players playing on ball last year our defenders have been behind the 8 ball for years and haven't been given much chance.

Waite's spoiling is not great either, he doesn't use his body when he spoils, he needs to make more body contact with his opponent when he spoils by jumping into his opponent a bit more.
Richmond stuffed up last year by playing Richo up the ground on Waite, playing to Waite's strenghts where Richo should have played out of the goal square on Waite.

Grigg I really like and think he'll continue to improve, great athlete with skills.

Bannister, Edwards and Hartlett are all on thin ice.

Bannister is a good player and a good defender who is capable but he needed a good pre season which he hasn't had. I have him ahead of Bentley and Pfeiffer back there and as long as he kicks well he'll be a very good chance. He's a tallish defender who can play on players shorter than him which I like.

Edwards needs to become more physical. Needs to be smarter and get present more times and make himself an option more. He has good speed, hands and is fast and a fairly good kick. Lacks a little height for KP. If his physicality, work rate and smarts improve he could make it as a forward pocket instead of Fisher/Wiggins if he plays well.

Hartlett has had a lot of injuries but he needs to make some serious improvements this year. His goal kicking last year wasn't very good but that can improve. His workrate and chasing looked terrible last year but that might have been due to a lack of fitness. His physicality needs to improve a lot as well. He's tall, athletic and a big kick. He was worth giving a second chance this year but he must show something in the VFL this year.

I've always disliked setanta, however he has a chance to prove himself this year. If he doesn't make it then he should be out the door at the end of the year.

Grigg will finish top 10 in the B&F at the end of the year and is already a gun, can't wait to see him this year. We will have a problem this year with who we should be playing, we finally have some depth which is fantastic and pressure from below...It will be interesting to see our line up for round 1..and our best team for the year...

From the Backline....I know its annoying but i just want to do a rough team to give people an idea of our depth and where players may miss out..

Thornton Jamison Carazzo
Grigg Waite Stevens
Gibbs Judd Simpson
Walker Cloke Wiggins
Betts Fevola Houlihan

Kruezer
Murphy
Hadlee

Int: Scotland Fisher Robinson Warnock

Then ofcourse we've got

backs: Austin, Joseph, Browne, Setanta, Johnson

Midfielders: Bentick, Armfield, Bannister,

Forwards: Garlett, Yarran, Hampson, Russell

I may have missed a couple and thats my point...in the first time in a long time the Carlton Football Club have DEPTH!!!! You beauty!
