The WB showed that you need belief, passion, a good game plan which is built on winning contested football a little bit of talent and some luck thrown in. The Doggies have done for the AFL what Leicester City did fro the EPL. They haven't been a big scoring side but very hard to score against- sound familiar?

I hope Ross is taking a greater role in 2017 in game style etc(as was suggested on another thread) and gets us back to the footy that made us a feared side to play in 2012-2015. I think far too much was made of us having to score more goals to beat the likes of hawthorn etc.

Well done doggies you done it from 7th, 4 cut throat games in a row 2 of those on the road and it wasn't their best 22!!! and they only kicked 13 goals to win against a very high scoring side. No gorilla forwards!!

Ross needs to have the balls to let the players play, like Beveridge. Less structure more instinct
Yup even in soccer , leicester play attractive and as a team.

Watching that game felt like an inferior version of Freo in 2013, however they didnt shit their pants at the occasion and the umpires weren't conspiring against them.

This. We had the umps against us as well.

Nerves fine. Look at the mob up the road last year. But when the umps are against you as well it's damn hard to get going. Makes it even more depressing about 2013 - we kicked straight and we would have won. The umpiring - while shocking - was secondary to that.

Couldn't agree more. That was Rossies gameplan with a bit more flair thrown in. Eg. Bennell Yarran Weller.

I hope the results of this season gave Ross the leeway to ignore the outside desires for softer prettier football.

Soooooooo true. Ross listen to the naysayers about finding more goals instead of working on clamping down the opposition more!! Also doggies showed don't need gorillas up forward to win cup.

Freo should not go back to the old game plan, bulldog mix their game plan with hawthorn attacking and Ross pressing.

Doesn't matter what era the gameplan for footy is simple - pressure the ball carrier, protect the space and beat your man when you don't have the ball, run to space and make an option to the ball carrier when your team has the ball The quickest way to move the ball is through the middle with good skill. The hardest part is getting the players to implement that

And score goal .scoreboard pressure, no momentum cut.

Tbh, if we can get the off season right (Hogan the pipe dream) and get out best players back we will be thereabouts. Hawthorn won't be the road block they have been in the past 5 years, but GWS do loom large.

In all fairness to the Dogs, they finished 7th (as you pointed out). Their game plan isn't some secret formula to success, otherwise they would have finished top 2. They had an extreme amount of luck that we just didn't get in the years where we were contenders.

Could not agree more - spot on

I actually don't see many major differences between us in early 2015 and the current Bulldogs. They just take the game on and back themselves to keep the ball moving forwards as a pack. You look at Johannisen's and Boyd's stats and they have massive metres gained numbers but they also have massive clangers. I actually don't think their back 6 are that incredibly skilled but they just don't stop running and chasing the entire game. Surely that fits the capabilities of our back 6 as well? Clean ball movement worked great for Hawthorn, and I don't think we should stop trying to improve our skills but I still think fundamentally our ability to win will come more from confidence and instinctive footy as we are unlikely ever to build a list with the overflowing skills of GWS and the Hawks.
