Sturt would be almost ready to retire with the list of half forwards we have have assessed. I hope not but 1 more injury.
Has received a very clear message that his time is passing unless he can get out there.

Hopefully, I can get down to training in the next couple of weeks and provide some (probably false) hope on how he is progressing.

Mark my words Toby will be in the Main squad by round 10 of the season
I can only comment on his talent and not work ethic but I am very bullish on his ceiling. I was going to make some bold claims on his future but it depends on if he has the drive and discipline to achieve it. If he does, I predict he will explode athetically like Warner did. He reminds me of Schammer and Black (based off highlights).

Won’t be much to report until new year. Had ACL repair on 15/08/2025.

The good news is that it was deemed unstable rather than ruptured. So hopefully better recovery quicker return. I’d expect to not see Sturt until second half of 2026.

He then needs to stay on the park for sustained run at Peel and get himself back in the AFL team. Do that and show the form he did in his last 10 games of 2024 and he’ll earn himself another year.

Seems very likely delist at this stage.

From his first half of season & then after the championships & being disappointed in himself & coming out and finishing the season strong I believe he’s got the discipline & drive to achieve anything tbh

Kicking was Schammer's strength when he arrived at the club. He would regularly take the kick-outs. Then we somehow turned him into a spud kick. Very similar to Paul Medhurst. Freo have the happy knack of turning elite users into butchers. Im sure we dont value skills even to this very day.

I remember the loud Bronx cheers for Schammer at Subi one day when he finally hit a target after slaughtering it all game, thought it was pretty poor. Can’t remember how fit the squad was, but he should have already been sent off broadway to work through it, not kept in the 1s. Did his kicking decline after he came back from a major injury, or am I imagining it? It was largely upstairs, you could see the torture on his face during games.

Perhaps it was to do with the game moving into a massive running game, trying to compete with the running power of the likes of the Eagles and Lions and nobody performs well under fatigue like that - I stop being able to count reps in repeat sprints, guys like Brent Stanton (one for the older Dream Team people) used to run his arse off all game and then burn it by foot because of it. Langdon the same.

I played footy with and against Byron from about 10-11 years through to when he was drafted, he was never a great kick of the footy.
He was just an absolute work horse; he could run and run and run. He didn't make it to the AFL because he was an elite footballer, he made it because he was an elite worker.

Lol Byron Schammer truthers. 'The club ruined his kicking' How? Did they tie him to a bed and break his ankles with a sledgehammer?

There is no mystery, he was an inside mid of insufficient standard to stay they and once moved off the ball into various flank roles his other limitations became more obvious.

He certainly worked hard in the Gym.

It will be a shame if Sturt is not able to show us his real abilities.Sadly one of those talented players whose body will not stand up to the rigours of the AFL.
