Plough sinks teeth into media role

TOMORROW signals the first day in the new life of football analyst Terry Wallace.

And, ironically, the former coach's duties will involve covering the Wizard Cup game between Geelong and his old club Western Bulldogs at Skilled Stadium.
Not since 1988 has Wallace been employed by anyone other than the Bulldogs, as either a player or coach.
And not since 1978, 25 years ago, has he not been involved in football as an AFL player or coach.
His transfer to the media was completed yesterday with news that he will join Fox Footy as an expert commentator this season.
That ties in neatly with his commitments to 3AW and the Herald Sun,, meaning Wallace the journalist in 2003 will watch just as much football as Wallace the coach in 2002.
His media involvement will be approached with the same intensity he displayed as a coach and player.
"I don't want to sit at home, I want to be a part of it and that starts with the Herald Sun's Monday morning footy meeting," Wallace said yesterday.
"You would be silly to close off either the media or coaching door in the future, and I don't have the ego to say that I will be definitely offered another coaching job.
"But for this year I can, and will, say what I like and that sits well with somebody who is reasonably outspoken."
Wallace admits his departure from Whitten Oval could have been handled better from a public relations perspective, and accepts the criticism that came his way last August.
"I copped a fair pizzling in August, but I don't take offence to that," Wallace said. "Maybe the timing was wrong but I have a public profile and as such must accept the criticism."
So how does Wallace the commentator approach tomorrow's game involving his old club?
According to Wallace, with great enthusiasm.
When asked to name a couple of players from both sides to watch, he's quickly into commentator mode.
"James Kelly of Geelong is a stand-out and many of the public don't fully understand how good he will be," Wallace said.
"For the Bulldogs to be good this year they'll need Patrick Wiggins to stand up as a tall forward and relief ruckman.
"Under Scott Clayton they have recruited very good medium-sized players, but need Wiggins and Wayde Skipper (in a year's time) to come through."

If he says that then why didn't he play them last year. I'll let him get away with not playing skip but i don't understand why he didn't play the wigstar.

Skip wasn't ready and I don't think Wig was properly over his knee last year.

Yeah skip wasn't ready but i think wiggo was.He was playing pretty good with werribee.Terry just didn't like playing the young guys and thats it.

If Wiggins was fit last year he should have been delisted - he was total crap all year and did not deserve a game in the seniors. From what I saw last week it looks like he was still getting over his knee last year and we can expect some serious improvement.

Like most people here I thought Wallace started to lose the plot last year, but I personally thought his handling of the younger guys over the last three years was superb.

Lots has been said about Bowden and Wiggins not getting a go but the fact is they haven't played well enough for Werribee.

Gee don't you think we should be thanking Plough for having the wisdom to leave when he did? It seems that all was not going well so maybe it's the best thing he could have done.

Bowden and Wiggins don't inspire me but after 3 years at the club they deserve a chance. A chance they hardly got with Wallace's insistance for a small forward line and team setup. There is no way Wallace's treatment of all the young players was superb. Look at Bowden and Mcguniess last year. Start on the bench after staring, cameo roles and no chance to build confidence. Its Clayton that always gave him the best!

Oh well its only my opinion that wiggo was fit during the last few rounds of last year,and he should have been given a chance, and i still think wallace didn't give the young guys the chance they deserved.

We must not have watched any of the same games because i though Wiggins on occassions looked very very good. I was a huge Anti Wiggins fan and his performances at the Bee's this year turned my opinion of him.

For a young bloke coming back from a knee reco, he did really really well, on occassions he dominated sides, he kicked 4 goals last week in the intra club which you have alluded too, which is good.

Like Mel40 said, his end of the year was fantastic in the two's and i thought he deserved his chance.

Expect big things from Wiggins this year, he showed glimpses of it last year, he'll produce this year.

I know stats don't tell the whole story - after all, on average, everyone in the country has one testicle - but last years stats do not read well for Bowden or Wiggins.

Bowden kicked the grand total of 9 goals for Werribee last year.

Up until round 15 he had been named in the best players twice (5th best and 6th best - hardly BOG). He had a good patch from rounds 16-20 which led to him playing in the seniors - as it should.

Wiggins kicked more than 3 goals on only 1 occasion last year - round 3 when he kicked 6. He kicked only 34 for the year and was named in the best players just 3 times (Bullants, Bendigo & Tassie - all the easybeats) - never as BOG.

Hardly the sort of numbers that make you think they will kill them at senior level.

Wallace's ploy of bringing a young guy up and give him a taste before sending him back is a good idea. McGuinness had played just 1 good game (6 goals) before he got a game against Essendon. He did OK in that game but the idea was to let him experience AFL footy - even though he was not ready for it. He will be a better player for the experience.

When it is warranted Wallace gave a kid a go and kept him there, Danny G has never been dropped.

In the last three years (not including this years draft) we have drafted 16 teenagers, Wallace played 13 of them - and all 16 are still on our list (two of the three who haven't played, Skip and Nick Bruton, have both had serious injuries).

The guys who played good minutes were the guys who performed - Murphy, Gia, Mitch, Shaggy, Shane Birss and Jordy. The others were either too small, too young or not performing.

For all that, I hope Wiggins and Bowden kick 5 each tomorrow.
