"Success"Well with the lack of PNG players, playing AF here suggests it hasn't been a success compared to PNG players here playing Rugby League here and overseas.
The list of PNG developed players in the NRL is literally just one: Justin Olam
The list of PNG developed players in the AFL is also literally just one: Ace Oea
And it really depends what you define as "success". The AFL doesn't really care about PNG in any sense of producing talent for the AFL, its activities are largely just to provide sport in an aid/development sense, not to strengthen the talent pool or whatever. The NRL actively does look to provide elite talent pathways and adult participation for PNG in a way that the AFL isn't intending to.
And the fact that the NRL is more popular is no great revelation. AFL was the more popular sport until PNG independence and shorlty thereafter. But as with independence PNG had TV as media, worked directly with Queensland more and Canberra as an administrator less, Rugby League took over as the more popular sport. The very fact that the AFL has managed to sandbag a system of youth participation in the sport despite the lack of colonial administration and TV broadcast is impressive, that's the point.
In fact, it can be argued that the relatively low participation rate of League in Australia, and the high rate of participation for League in PNG, the lack of players making the jump to become a consistently listed NRL player is an indictment on the league and that it isn't a success at all.
