Expansion PNG Joins NRL .......... Options For AFL ??

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Well with the lack of PNG players, playing AF here suggests it hasn't been a success compared to PNG players here playing Rugby League here and overseas.
"Success"

The list of PNG developed players in the NRL is literally just one: Justin Olam
The list of PNG developed players in the AFL is also literally just one: Ace Oea

And it really depends what you define as "success". The AFL doesn't really care about PNG in any sense of producing talent for the AFL, its activities are largely just to provide sport in an aid/development sense, not to strengthen the talent pool or whatever. The NRL actively does look to provide elite talent pathways and adult participation for PNG in a way that the AFL isn't intending to.

And the fact that the NRL is more popular is no great revelation. AFL was the more popular sport until PNG independence and shorlty thereafter. But as with independence PNG had TV as media, worked directly with Queensland more and Canberra as an administrator less, Rugby League took over as the more popular sport. The very fact that the AFL has managed to sandbag a system of youth participation in the sport despite the lack of colonial administration and TV broadcast is impressive, that's the point.

In fact, it can be argued that the relatively low participation rate of League in Australia, and the high rate of participation for League in PNG, the lack of players making the jump to become a consistently listed NRL player is an indictment on the league and that it isn't a success at all.

There is quite a number of PNG players playing Australian Football but making it to AFL level is
much harder and usually involves being tall.
it hasn't been a success

The PNG are usually the world champions in Australian Football and are only challenged by other countries in that countries like Ireland, New Zealand and the U,S,A, because they have the talls and having the talls is a great advantage at stoppages.
it's great to see Australian Football doing well in PNG - hopefully AFL will provide some sort of positive influence.

it's great to see Australian Football, and not AFL.
I went to a WAFLW game because of a French connection and there was a bigger crowd than ALW !

How many PNG players are playing in the NSW and Queensland cups?
How many PNG players are playing in the Bristish and French compititions?
The AFL are wasting money trying to develop AF in PNG as clearly a vast majority of the population are not interested.
Now lets move on

The AFL are wasting money trying to develop AF in PNG

That's you opinion and not unexpected of you.

The AFL are interested in developing Australian Football all over the world for various reasons.
The number of PNG participants in Australian Football are increasing all the time
as well as the number of PNG players coming to Australia to further their football experience.
Those people interested in Australian Football other than AFL would be very happy with
the resurrection of Australian football in PNG.
Despite the large number of Papuans playing Australian Football few have made it to AFL level.
which is an indictment of how difficult it is to play AFL.
Look at Australia's own indigenous population. How many indigenous "talls" can you name ?
It is extremely hard to play AFL football and if you are not blessed with height then the competition is immense.

Why is this a good thing for the NRL? Why does it matter? You're yet to explain this.

How is a bunch of PNG players running around in Europe at a sub-NRL talent level good, or indeed, all that relevant to the NRL?

The AFL more or less spends money in PNG in part because of social obligation largely in tandem with governments as part of general development/aid spending as well as simply its wider mission to do good. It doesn't and shouldn't see it as some sort of big strategy for the elite level of developing talent. Ace Oea was a surprising positive but not the aims of the AFL in PNG.

Clearly your opinion on "waste", and zero evidence that "they're not interested". Sure it's the smaller sport than RL there but you're offering no evidence that certain towns or communities don't enjoy playing Aussie Rules, especially as we know that it was the bigger sport pre 1975 which wasn't that long ago so there has to be some residual sport.

But what is "development" also, if not just continuing to support ongoing Aussie Rules that has been going on for a decade?
The main competition (clearly the strongest league without expat Australians outside Austrlaia, as evidence by their conseucitve IC wins defeating UK, Ireland, NZ etc. in 2014 and 2017) gets media coverage locally etc:

I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make. You're just spewing bile in no real direction at all without it being based in any sort of reality.

I say this in all sincerity:

What the hell are you on about? I'm legitimately confused at what you're trying to achieve here.

He´s a professional troll. He hates AFL so much, yet spends his whole life thinking about it.

Mods have let him get away with it for years. That's a credit to his trolling skills. He knows exactly how far to push and when to push back. One of the best ever.

Some people can´t even see it through it.

Wrong wrong wrong, and take your head out the sand and join the real world.

Says more about the quality and priorities of the moderation here than anything. I don't think this guy is particularly bright

No, you need to grow up.
It's honestly quite sad how much another sport can impact your thinking and life.

Focus on the game you love. You will be a lot happier.

It really doesn´t matter that AFL is the number one code in Australia.

Life is too short.

I think some here really need to learn that in normal sports there's a difference between the club competitions (notice the plural) and the sport itself...

Also I wouldn't be throwing any stones in glass houses. This sub-form was created at the behest of a person who is literally infamous as an AFL troll on every Aussie sports forum/social media website. Anyone can see the obsession with other sports in every thread here.

I'd love to see the AFL try to "soft power invade" a near by small nation.....like say Timore Leste or the Solomon islands

It could actually easily be done with enough investment and effort.

But obviously the "pay off" would be tiny and it'd take someone like twiggy forest to be the backer of it.

You'd just flood the place with programs, equipment, send over some fringe AFL players from time to time for clinics/school visits, sign a deal with a local tv station to broadcast it, eventually set up pathways/academies and most importantly sell the dream to the kids that they could one day make it to the AFL.

Within a generation you could have the a whole new place who follows the sport.

As I said this is just fantasy because it's not worth the AFL's time and no billionaire would care to do it

If I had billions in the bank though, I definitely do it.

Australian Football is already played in Timor leste and the Solomon Islands.

Within a generation you could have the a whole new place who follows the sport.

It is perfectly feasible and the result would me another Nauru

and despite Nauru having some of the Australian Footballers that I have seen
Nauru simp[ly doesn't have the "talls".

I know the sport is already played there, but it's also played in Sweden and Japan.

I mean really getting the participation numbers up to standard and number where they could start producing AFL or at least state league level players and getting the game entrenched in people minds and the culture.

Nauru is also tiny, like 10,000 people live there. So naturally it'd be very rare for them to develop a player of getting to a very high level simply through lack of numbers.

Australian Football is played regularly in over 55 countries now.

It's pointless. AI says there are over 40k participants in AFLPNG Yest there is one AFL players and a handful of state players. Like Australian aboriginal players there are no "talls"
Yet, AI says there are 13 Sudanese players in the AFL.

Nauru plays at a very high standard but it has no "talls" Even so they out-rucked and out-marked the tall U.S.A. at International Cups.
If you want to spend money wisely get Albanese to grant 50 football visas to Sudan.

Good luck getting albo to fund expansion of our own native Australian game, he only funds the international expansion of his favourite English code via the Australian tax payer.

And even promotes his pet sport to international heads-of-state.
You'd think he'd have the pride and wisdom to promote the Australian game
which traditionally has been a book-end for some international trade fairs
and generated interest in Australia and it's products generally.

But thanks for the story.

I don't mind this idea. As to where I'd do it, Bougainville is becoming independent from PNG in the next few years. They only have 300 000 people, but they also sit on top of $90 billion in mining resources. China has already discussed them joining the Belt and Road Initiative so there's an incentive for our government to get involved in some way to influence the new Bougainville government. If rugby league's popularity can't be displaced from PNG at this point, maybe Bougainville is somewhere our game can still be dominant if a grassroots program is set up.
