this seasons he has been well below what he has done in previous years. so far he has only kicked 6 goals in 6 games, including 0 on the weekend

where do you believe he currently stands at geelong? will he keep his spot in our side if he keeps on playing like he has? can vardy or kersten possibly replace him in 2013?

personally i dont like the idea of playing around with key position spots when you are challenging for a flag like we are, you know what you will get week in week out from podsiadly, and that he will also keep his opponent busy and under pressure in contests, also im not confident what kersten/vardy would be like in finals holding down a key position post.

and despite kicking 0 goals on the weekend and only 6 for the season, i think he has taken some good strong marks in games, could have easily got 2-3 on the weekend

i can easily see an argument for why you would keep him in all year and also why you would drop him on current form continuing

whats your opinion?

Pods is leading up fine, contesting well, and presenting as big forwards should do, so the effort and ticker from him is still there. However I'm not liking his increasingly unreliable accuracy on goal, particularly from set shots, so that is of concern and needs to be worked on.

Has been an absolutely wonderful servant of this club over the last couple of years and I really admire what he's done for us. There will come a time in the near future though where he has to be moved aside for a developing forward (Vardy) who has demonstrated to me he has what it takes to compliment Hawkins as our 2nd tall I50.

Vardy needs to be developed in his role as much as possible with the aim of sculpting our potential 2015-16 side in mind, so Pods unfortunately will be the casualty who falls victim to this.

Pods has definitely got some good footy left in him which should be fairly obvious to anyone who's watched him lately and in 2012. The dilemma here though is planning for the future, in which case the MC and coaching staff need to create a scenario in which both can feature in the best 22 as much as possible, with two intentions in mind- a) putting the side out on the park every week most capable of winning, and b) looking ahead to maturing our youngsters so they can fill the void some of our departing players will leave in 2-3 years time.

I'm sure they can take both those into account for the meantime, but eventually we're going to have to let go and that will come via a steady, managed way of exposing Vardy to Pods' role (i.e. phasing him out over time). Will keep his spot for this season at least, and no disrespect to Pods who has served our club wonderfully but planning for the long haul is important here.

Pods seems like the type of guy to me who will have our kids in mind when considering his future. :thumbsu:

if a premiership wasnt in the balance this year, podsiadlys immediate future might be more of a doubt in the best 22, the thought of having vardy or kersten both with very little senior experience trying to hold down CHF during a finals campaign doesnt sit well with me, its not something im overly keen on experimenting with during a premiership year CHF.. but his form really doesnt guarantee anything is the real thing that will keep being discussed if it continues as it has so far

one thing that is obvious thought is podsiadly still has a lot of hunger and determination which can be seen by his attack on the ball and his contested marking this year.

purely based on form alone as a criteria, he isnt guaranteed a starting 18 every round this season

I don't know if it is intentional or not, but Hawkins and Podsiadly have almost been played as decoys this year as they've been drawing a lot of attention from defensive teams. With all the focus on stopping Hawkins and Pods, the smaller guys have been having a good run at the goals - note Christensen and Motlop, Smedts, Taylor and Selwood have all contributed so far, and despite being what we would call well held, Hawkins is still doing OK with 13 from 5 games and clearly not looking fit.

His work rate has been exceptional and his place in our best 18 is secure.
I also have it on good authority that this could be his last season....

His field kicking is superb, and has popped up in defense and uses the ball incredibly well. I think later in the season our structure will change slightly, and like 2011 we will go from a team who handballs a lot to a team who kicks longer.

And thats when a deep sitting Pods and Hawkins will impact games.

not decoys, but what is happening is that we are no longer moving the ball from defense via long kicks, what we are now doing is cutting thru pressure from defense and thru the midfield with rapid handballing in straight lines in large supportive groups. what this does is it means that once the ball gets to HF we have heavy numbers of defenders and midfielders spread out ready to contribute to the score board.

this year it is a much more even spread across the board compared to last year

the main objective of the way we are moving it this year is to get the ball around 70-50 m out and then have a large spread of options available to score, defenders having pushed up to HF, midfielders pushed up around the ball, and forwards of course

last year we were simply just trying to kick our way thru, and what it resulted in was the ball getting to around the wings or middle of CHB and wing, then a long kick to HF resulting in a turnover or congestion, we relied too much on kicking it long and deep to hawkins and podsiadly which wasnt healthy, this year we have spread it out via pushing numbers up with movement and run to spread the goal scorers out.

it is much much better this season

Totally agree on the work rate. He has been up and down presenting and running to space: I dont have the stats but i seem to remember him marking plenty outside F50 and further up the ground. His big body makes defenders accountable. Set shots is a concern but everyone gets a bit yippy now and again....
Also, we are getting contributions across the board from 10 - 14 different scorers so the reliance on him to kick a bag each week is diminished. But the threat is till there and thus I like the defensive accountability he draws...

Still best 18 for mine. The future is coming however....

He and Hawkins seem to be below their best so hopefully they can turn it on this weekend .

He was unlucky not to bag 3 on the weekend

He has been playing and presenting well all season, particularly in the long lead-ups at which he is so good, and is obviously best 18.
But, as you say, the future is coming, and it may (most likely will, I think) arrive at the end of this season, so we need to start edging Vards into the set-up in a month or so, as soon as he's match-fit. Perhaps Scotty's not as dumb as he looks, and the shuffling back and forth of Pods/Taylor/Lonergan is about more than just versatility for its own sake - perhaps it's to create options for a phased introduction of a big, 6'6", powerful, high-marking, long-kicking forward with very good hands and exceptional below-the-knees agility for such a big bloke.

With Scotty being a little crafty and big on versatility we may see Pods in the side playing more back presuming Mitch is on the shit list.

Whilst it is experimental for sure, its one way to get Hawk, Vardy/Kersten up forward, West and Blitz ruck and HT, Lonners, Mack and Pods down back. Gives a lot of flexibility during the game too.... ALthough need to be careful whom Pods is on down back.. and it is very tall...

Daz, We'll never know what we've got till we go there!!

Wouldn't have minded a taller option gainst Dockers last year! An upgrade in size and power just adds another string to the bow.

Not kicking many goals but doing alot of the "dirty work"......hard leading all the way up to half-back, taking his opponent out of the forward 50, hit up contested mark target, etc. You need someone like that to do all the grunt work, leaving Hawkins one-out close to goal and the little fellas plenty of space to run in to.

I noticed this especially on Saturday night and had no problems with him in this role whatsoever.

Bingo.

We are definitely going inside 50 differently this year.
Pods is fine. We need someone to take crunch time marks. And in that regard Pods is miles ahead of the kids.

Don't know about that. Sure, he's probably not kicking as many goals as he'd like (again, partly due to some inaccuracy in front of goal- anyone know how many behinds he's kicked this year?) but is presenting, marking, and contesting well as big forwards should. Based on form alone as selection criteria he is playing well and is important to our structure, and should thus receive a starting position until such time that Vardy is equipped enough to fill the void he'll leave in our forward structure.

As another poster alluded to earlier him and Hawk are being played as decoys whilst our smalls in Christensen, Motlop, Smedts, plus some of our midfielders are crumbing and kicking a lot of our goals. In doing that we increase our scoring power whilst drawing opposition defenders to Tomahawk/Pods who are strong 1v1, therefore freeing up our other options to kick goals.

Last year we clearly relied far too much on Hawkins to kick goals and it's good to see we have that spread going now. Pods acts as a big part of this by playing as that decoy and leading up/contesting, just wish he'd work on his conversion so we could have even more scoring power.

Having said that Vardy needs game time too for the reasons I described earlier. He'll be ill-equipped to take over the reigns of Pods' role once his time is up (which will be soon) if he doesn't receive sufficient opportunities and exposure to it. The GWS and GC games in a couple of weeks would be a good place to start- by that time Pods could do with a breather and Vardy should have shown more than enough in the VFL to demonstrate he can contribute to our senior side (if he hasn't already).

Pods is crucial
he is the only one hitting packs even when he is out of position
poor tommy isnt even getting near the contest at the moment
he will improve but without Pods the pressure on him at the moment would be immense
what we must avoid doing is promoting Vards into this roll too early or ever
the physical stress on Pods as he tries to do what he does is huge
Vards is not ready for this, and i suspect it will never be a good role for him

Pods is crucial, he is our leading up battering ram
ask Mots what he thinks

Statistics don't record some of the positive things JPod does, e.g., shepherding goals, & contesting hard for the ball. He isn't kicking goals, but we aren't suffering because of that. His size, presence and experience are critical.

Definitely a different role this year to previous years and doing it very well IMO.

Willing to sacrifice his own game for the better of the team (ala Bartel) whether it be playing second fiddle to Hawkins or switching to defence when Taylor goes forward. Fantastic clubman.

Still in the best 18 easily, and until someone stands up and proves to be a more worthy replacement (which I'm yet to see) he'll keep getting games and deservedly so. Vardy maybe, but until he can regularly string together games and play with some consistency, Pods is still the man.

While he might be coming to the end of an amazing career, there's life in the old dog yet.
